Book excerpt: CE MEMOIRE ABORDE LE PROBLEME DE L'IMPACT DE L'EXPLOITATION PAR LA PECHE SUR LA DYNAMIQUE DE DIVERSITE DES PEUPLEMENTS DE POISSONS DEMERSAUX. LES DONNEES UTILISEES PROVIENNENT DE CAMPAGNES ANNUELLES DE CHALUTAGE DE FOND MENEES PAR L'IFREMER DEPUIS 1983 POUR EVALUER LES RESSOURCES HALIEUTIQUES DANS LE GOLFE DE GASCOGNE ET DANS LE GOLFE DU LION. DES DESCRIPTEURS MULTISPECIFIQUES SONT UTILISES POUR CARACTERISER LA DYNAMIQUE DE CES PEUPLEMENTS (INDICES DE DIVERSITE, VARIABILITE TEMPORELLE DE LA BIOMASSE TOTALE ET DE LA PENTE MULTISPECIFIQUE DU SPECTRE DE POIDS, PENTE DES DROITES D'ACCUMULATION D'ESPECES MESURANT LA SEGREGATION SPATIALE). LES DIFFERENCES SONT MISES EN RELATION AVEC UN INDICE D'EXPLOITATION (DEBARQUEMENTS ANNUELS, DIVISEE PAR LA SURFACE DE LA REGION CONCERNEE). D'AUTRES REGIONS ONT ETE INTEGREES DANS CETTE ANALYSE LORSQUE LES VALEURS DES INDICATEURS ETAIENT DISPONIBLES DANS LA LITTERATURE (MER DU NORD, PLATEAU DE NOUVELLE-ECOSSE, KENYA ET GUYANE FRANCAISE). LE PEUPLEMENT DU GOLFE DU LION EST PLUS DIVERSIFIE QUE CELUI DU GOLFE DE GASCOGNE. CES CARACTERISTIQUES SONT DUES A LA BIOGEOGRAPHIE PLUTOT QU'A UN EFFET DE LA PECHE. LA VARIABILITE DE LA BIOMASSE TOTALE ET CELLE DE LA PENTE DU SPECTRE MULTISPECIFIQUE AUGMENTENT DEPUIS LES REGIONS LES MOINS EXPLOITEES VERS LES PLUS EXPLOITEES. A L'INVERSE, LA SEGREGATION SPATIALE DIMINUE. EN PRELEVANT DE LA BIOMASSE, L'EXPLOITATION AUGMENTE LA DISPONIBILITE DES RESSOURCES POUR LES INDIVIDUS NON PECHES. LES INTERACTIONS (COMPENSATIONS) ENTRE ESPECES DIMINUENT (AUGMENTANT LA VARIABILITE DE BIOMASSE TOTALE ET DE LA PENTE DU SPECTRE DE POIDS). EN CONSEQUENCE, L'EXCLUSION COMPETITIVE DIMINUE ET LA COEXISTENCE LOCALE DES INDIVIDUS EST FACILITEE (DIMINUTION DE SEGREGATION SPATIALE). A LONG TERME, LA DIVERSITE EST DONC MENACEE PAR RAREFACTION DES ESPECES PRELEVEES PAR L'EXPLOITATION MAIS AUSSI PAR ALTERATION DES INTERACTIONS DONT LE MAINTIEN DE LA DIVERSITE DEPEND POUR PARTIE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical relationship between capital and labor has evolved in the past few decades. One particularly noteworthy development is the rise of shared capitalism, a system in which workers have become partial owners of their firms and thus, in effect, both employees and stockholders. Profit sharing arrangements and gain-sharing bonuses, which tie compensation directly to a firm’s performance, also reflect this new attitude toward labor. Shared Capitalism at Work analyzes the effects of this trend on workers and firms. The contributors focus on four main areas: the fraction of firms that participate in shared capitalism programs in the United States and abroad, the factors that enable these firms to overcome classic free rider and risk problems, the effect of shared capitalism on firm performance, and the impact of shared capitalism on worker well-being. This volume provides essential studies for understanding the increasingly important role of shared capitalism in the modern workplace.

Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

Book excerpt: Sandy beaches represent some of the most dynamic environments on Earth and examining their morphodynamic behaviour over different temporal and spatial scales is challenging, relying on multidisciplinary approaches and techniques. Sandy Beach Morphodynamics brings together the latest research on beach systems and their morphodynamics and the ways in which they are studied in 29 chapters that review the full spectrum of beach morphodynamics. The chapters are written by leading experts in the field and provide introductory level understanding of physical processes and resulting landforms, along with more advanced discussions. Includes chapters that are written by the world's leading experts, including the latest up-to-date thinking on a variety of subject areas Covers state-of-the-art techniques, bringing the reader the latest technologies/methods being used to understand beach systems Presents a clear-and-concise description of processes and techniques that enables a clear understanding of coastal processes

Book excerpt: We are all fascinated by the mystery of metamorphosis – of the caterpillar that transforms itself into a butterfly. Their bodies have almost nothing in common. They don’t share the same world: one crawls on the ground and the other flutters its wings in the air. And yet they are one and the same life. Emanuele Coccia argues that metamorphosis – the phenomenon that allows the same life to subsist in disparate bodies – is the relationship that binds all species together and unites the living with the non-living. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, plants, animals: they are all one and the same life. Each species, including the human species, is the metamorphosis of all those that preceded it – the same life, cobbling together a new body and a new form in order to exist differently. And there is no opposition between the living and the non-living: life is always the reincarnation of the non-living, a carnival of the telluric substance of a planet – the Earth – that continually draws new faces and new ways of being out of even the smallest particle of its disparate body. By highlighting what joins humans together with other forms of life, Coccia’s brilliant reflection on metamorphosis encourages us to abandon our view of the human species as static and independent and to recognize instead that we are part of a much larger and interconnected form of life.

Book excerpt: Despite the enormous literature on the crusades, the Frankish states in the Aegean (set up in the wake of the Fourth Crusade in 1204) have been seriously neglected by modern historians. Yet their history is both compelling in itself - these were the last crusader states to be set up in the eastern Mediterranean and among the last to fall to the Turks - and also valuable for the case study they offer in medieval colonialism. Peter Lock surveys the social, economic, religious and cultural aspects of the region within a broad political framework, and explores the clash of cultures between the Frankish interlopers and their Byzantine subjects. This is a major addition to crusading studies.
