Le fon est une langue kwa (groupe gbe), parlee principalement dans le sud du Benin par pres de 2 millions de locuteurs. La serialisation verbale est un phenomene linguistique largement observe dans les langues d'Afrique de l'Ouest comme le fon et dans d'autres langues typologiquement variees. Apres avoir presente un apercu de la grammaire du fon et un tour de la question concernant la serialisation verbale, l'auteure se consacre a l'examen des constructions serielles en fon dans une approche typologique et fonctionnelle, integrant des parametres semantiques et pragmatiques a l'analyse morphosyntaxique. Neuf types de constructions serielles sont etudies : les causatives, les instrumentales, les directionnelles, les comitatives, les comparatives, les aspectuelles, les resultatives, les sequentielles et les compositionnelles. L'ouvrage apporte une contribution typologique a trois niveaux. Premierement, il propose un modele pour aborder la description de la serialisation verbale dans d'autres langues. Deuxiemement, il contribue a enrichir la typologie des constructions serielles en precisant pour le fon leurs fonctions, leurs origines possibles et les correlats conceptuels lies a leur utilisation. Enfin il montre que l'etude des constructions serielles permet de raffiner les typologies actuelles concernant la classification des langues serialisantes.

They cover a wide range of language families. All authors address two basic questions about verb serialization: First, what is the structure and thematic constitution of the construction? The answers to this question cover the spectrum of the options that are available in current grammatical theory. Second, what aspect of the grammar differentiates between languages which have serial constructions and those which do not? The specific proposals made by the authors are discussed by R. Larson in the concluding paper. Larson opens new perspectives for research on verb serialization by posing the following question: what analogues for verb serialization can be found in the more familiar grammatical apparatus of English? It is suggested that verb serialization finds a clear parallel in the secondary predicate structures of English.

As a result, these languages were only referred to in the context of very specific discussions such as serial verb constructions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are extremely gifted in acquiring their native languages, but languages nevertheless change over time. Why does this paradox exist? In this study of creole languages, Enoch Oladé Aboh addresses this question, arguing that language acquisition requires contact between different linguistic sub-systems that feed into the hybrid grammars that learners develop. There is no qualitative difference between a child learning their language in a multilingual environment and a child raised in a monolingual environment. In both situations, children learn to master multiple linguistic sub-systems that are in contact and may be combined to produce new variants. These new variants are part of the inputs for subsequent learners. Contributing to the debate on language acquisition and change, Aboh shows that language learning is always imperfect: learners' motivation is not to replicate the target language faithfully but to develop a system close enough to the target that guarantees successful communication and group membership.
