Book Synopsis Land in the Struggles for Citizenship in Africa by : Sam Moyo
Download or read book Land in the Struggles for Citizenship in Africa written by Sam Moyo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variety of land questions facing Africa and the divergent strategies proposed to resolve them continue to evoke debates. Increasingly, in response to the enduring problems of land tenure, there are land movements of all shapes and orientations, some reformist and others quite revolutionary in their agenda. However revolutionary, land movements have tended to ignore the land tenure interests of women, pastoralists, youth and indigenous people. Several of these longstanding and emerging issues in land tenure include the role of the state in land tenure reforms; urban land questions, the nature of land struggles and improvements; and, the impact of land tenure developments on particular social groups and countries. An overarching concern is the extent to which land rights are being commodified, through the conversion of land held under customary tenure systems into marketised systems. The consequences of this include growing land concentration, land tenure insecurities, diminishing access to land by various sections of society, including the poor, women and less dominant ethno-religious groups. This volume brings together different studies on Africas land questions exploring emerging land issues on the continent in terms of the wider questions of development, citizenship, and democratisation. The chapters discuss the land question through a variety of themes. Some focus on the agrarian aspects of the land questions, while others elucidate the urban dimensions of the land question.

This book was released on 1973-07-01 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume I3 of the Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights relates to the year I970 and reflects a return to the usual pattern of activity under the Convention during that year, after the exceptional situation produced in I969 by the "Greek Case". This volume is published somewhat later than usual, because an extra volume in this series has been published between volumes I2 and I3 containing the Report of the European Com mission of Human Rights and the Resolution of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe relating to the "Greek Case". Part I of this Volume contains, as usual, the basic texts, chief among which are the amendments now made to the Convention following the entry into force on 2I September I970 of the Third Protocol, which relates to the procedure of the Commission. On the same date, the Second Protocol also entered into force, conferring on the Court of Human Rights competence to give advisory opinions. The text of this Protocol is to be found in Volume 6 at pages 3ff. The amendments and additions to the Rules of Court consequent upon the entry into force of the Second Protocol are set out in Part I of this Volume.

Download or read book State Practice Regarding State Immunities/La Pratique des Etats concernant les Immunités des Etats written by Council of Europe/Conseil de l'Europe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of the Council of Europe Pilot Project on State Practice Regarding State Immunities carried out under the auspices of the Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law (CAHDI) since 2002. It presents and analyses the material submitted by 27 Member States and one Observer State of the Council of Europe, including decisions of national courts, relevant legislation and other documents. The analytical report was undertaken by the Department of European, International and Comparative Law of the University of Vienna, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva. It compares State practice with the relevant articles of the UN Convention, the European Convention on State Immunity and the draft articles prepared by academic institutions. It is the first in depth-analysis of European State practice in the field of State immunity. Such a broad analysis is essential, in particular for the ascertainment of customary international law. This book is addressed to officials, practitioners engaged in business relations with foreign States, and academics.
