Book Synopsis Advances in Microfluidics Technology for Diagnostics and Detection by : David Kinahan
Download or read book Advances in Microfluidics Technology for Diagnostics and Detection written by David Kinahan and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip have, in recent years, come to the forefront in diagnostics and detection. At point-of-care, in the emergency room, and at the hospital bed or GP clinic, lab-on-a-chip offers the potential to rapidly detect time-critical and life-threatening diseases such as sepsis and bacterial meningitis. Furthermore, portable and user-friendly diagnostic platforms can enable disease diagnostics and detection in resource-poor settings where centralised laboratory facilities may not be available. At point-of-use, microfluidics and lab-on-chip can be applied in the field to rapidly identify plant pathogens, thus reducing the need for damaging broad spectrum pesticides while also reducing food losses. Microfluidics can also be applied to the continuous monitoring of water quality and can support policy-makers and protection agencies in protecting the environment. Perhaps most excitingly, microfluidics also offers the potential to enable entirely new diagnostic tests that cannot be implemented using conventional laboratory tools. Examples of microfluidics at the frontier of new medical diagnostic tests include early detection of cancers through circulating tumour cells (CTCs) and highly sensitive genetic tests using droplet-based digital PCR. This Special Issue on “Advances in Microfluidics Technology for Diagnostics and Detection” aims to gather outstanding research and to carry out comprehensive coverage of all aspects related to microfluidics in diagnostics and detection.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Electromechanical Effects and Applications by : G A Maugin
Download or read book Nonlinear Electromechanical Effects and Applications written by G A Maugin and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book develops a cross-disciplinary approach to the phenomenon of linear and nonlinear wave propagation in piezoelectric crystals. Based on the rigorous presentation of nonlinear continuum mechanics and electromechanical interactions in anisotropic bodies, the work starts from primary principles, is progressive and develops the subject matter by means of worked out examples up to the most recent applications in signal processing, introducing the most efficient methods of applied mathematics. The attention is especially focused on phenomena such as the formation of shocks, the generation harmonics, the anisochronism of resonators, nonlinear surface waves, the convolution of signals by means of surface-wave guides, the nonlinear couling between the crystal and deformations, the compensation between dispersion and nonlinearity. The work should be of pedagogical and practical interest to graduate students and research workers in various fields of applied science and engineering. Request Inspection Copy

Book Synopsis Rayleigh-Wave Theory and Application by : Eric A. Ash
Download or read book Rayleigh-Wave Theory and Application written by Eric A. Ash and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no respect for mere age in Science or Technology. Yet the cen tenary of the discovery, by the third Lord Rayleigh, that elastic waves can be guided by a surface, is memorable for the contradictions which it encompasses: Rayleigh's assessment of his classic 1885 paper as a rather minor mathematical development with a potential value only in seismology on the one hand; on the other the rediscovery of the subject in a totally that of electronic signal processing - which has led to its different fiel- explosive growth over the last twenty years. The new surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have proved to be per electronic components. Today almost all television receivers con vasive tain one or more SAW filters, sophisticated radars depend on SAW signal processing, and SAW devices have been incorporated in ultra-high perfor mance opto-electronic systems. With the objective of surveying these developments and attempting to predict those that can be foreseen, as well as marking the centenary of Lord Rayleigh's discovery, The Rank Prize Funds' Committee for Opto Electronics organised a symposium in London, in July 1985. It was held in the Royal Institution, London, where Rayleigh himself once worked and often lectured. The present volume is the tangible outcome of the symposium, In which international experts survey.ed their various fields, and presented the most exciting recent developments.

This book was released on 2005-09-12 with total page 3742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 16th ICSMGE responds to the needs of the engineering and construction community, promoting dialog and exchange between academia and practice in various aspects of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. This is reflected in the central theme of the conference 'Geotechnology in Harmony with the Global Environment'. The proceedings of the conference are of great interest for geo-engineers and researchers in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Volume 1 contains 5 plenary session lectures, the Terzaghi Oration, Heritage Lecture, and 3 papers presented in the major project session. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 contain papers with the following topics: Soil mechanics in general; Infrastructure and mobility; Environmental issues of geotechnical engineering; Enhancing natural disaster reduction systems; Professional practice and education. Volume 5 contains the report of practitioner/academic forum, 20 general reports, a summary of the sessions and workshops held during the conference.
