Book Synopsis In My Father's Shadow by : Chris Welles Feder
Download or read book In My Father's Shadow written by Chris Welles Feder and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2009-11-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of all the many stars and celebrities Hollywood has produced, only a handful have achieved the fame—and, some would say, infamy—of Orson Welles, the creator and star of what is arguably the greatest American film, Citizen Kane. Many books have been written about him, detailing his achievements as an artist as well his foibles as a human being. None of them, however, has gotten so close to the real man as does Chris Welles Feder's beautifully realized portrait of her father. In My Father's Shadow is a classic story of a life lived in the public eye, told with affection and the wide-eyed wonder of a daughter who never stopped believing that someday she would truly know and understand her elusive and larger-than-life father. The result is a moving and insightful look at life in the shadow of a legendary figure and an immensely entertaining story of growing up in the unreal reality of Hollywood, enhanced by Welles Feder's collection of many never-before-seen family photographs.

Book Synopsis The Spiral of Anti-Other Rhetoric by : Elisabeth Le
Download or read book The Spiral of Anti-Other Rhetoric written by Elisabeth Le and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-08-22 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do media inform our representations of the Other and how does this influence intercultural / international relations? While officially dialogues between different national societies are conducted by diplomats in bilateral and multilateral settings, in practice journalists also participate every day in such dialogues through the phenomenon of the “international media echo” in which they report on each others’ societies. Until now, media have only been investigated for their potential role in the foreign policy of specific states. In a case study involving media in three national cultures and languages (French, American and Russian), this book presents an interdisciplinary framework that combines quantitative and qualitative analyses for the study of the international media echo in an intercultural / international relations perspective. In particular, the fundamental functioning of “spirals of anti-Other rhetoric”, i.e. media wars, is examined in a Critical Discourse Analysis approach completed with Social Identity Theory and International Relations theories.

Book Synopsis What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? by : Joseph McBride
Download or read book What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? written by Joseph McBride and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “personal and passionate” account of the Citizen Kane director’s years as an expatriate and self-funded filmmaker (Los Angeles Times). At twenty-five, Orson Welles directed, co-wrote, and starred in Citizen Kane, widely considered the best film ever made. But Welles was such a revolutionary filmmaker that he found himself at odds with the Hollywood studio system, and his work was so far ahead of its time that he never regained the popular following he once enjoyed. Frustrated by Hollywood and falling victim to the postwar blacklist, Welles left for a long European exile. But he kept making films, functioning with the creative freedom of an independent filmmaker before that term became common and eventually preserving his independence by funding virtually all his own projects. Because he worked defiantly outside the system, Welles has often been maligned as an errant genius who squandered his early promise. Film critic Joseph McBride, who acted in Welles’s unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, challenges conventional wisdom about Welles’s supposed creative decline in this first comprehensive examination of the films of Welles’s artistically rich yet little-known later period. During the 1970s and ’80s, Welles was breaking new aesthetic ground, experimenting as adventurously as he had throughout his career. McBride’s friendship and collaboration with Welles and his interviews with those who knew and worked with him make What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? a portrait of rare intimacy and insight. Reassessing Welles’s final period in the context of his entire life and work, this revealing portrait of this great film artist will change the terms of how Orson Welles is regarded. “[An] anecdote-illuminated account of Welles’s later years.” —The Washington Post “Joseph McBride. . .has a clearer understanding of Welles and his films than almost anyone.” —Martin Scorsese “A definitive study.” —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Download or read book Ferruccio Busoni written by Della Couling and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Busoni's radical ideas about music was, is, and could be drew fire from his more conservative contemporaries. His thoughts on musical notation, opera, and the division of the scale were well ahead of his time, but, in many cases, are common currency today. Busoni went into voluntary exile in Switzerland during World War I, unwilling to take sides, and only recently has the veil been gradually lifted from his work and theories. Ferruccio Busoni: "A Musical Ishmael" shines a revealing light on Busoni's life, concepts, and profound influence on contemporary musical aesthetics and practice."--BOOK JACKET.
