This book was released on 2024-11-18 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume work contains a selection of papers first presented at the 22nd International Colloquium on Latin Linguistics, held in Prague (2023). The papers address important issues in Latin linguistics with a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. The first volume ("Word") contains texts concerning Latin phonology, etymology, flexion and derivation, and lexical semantics, both with respect to individual words and to entire word classes. Both diachronic and synchronic perspectives are employed in the discussion of the various issues. The second volume ("Clause and Discourse") includes papers dealing with issues of syntax and semantics, and with the structure of texts and pragmatic aspects. One of the subchapters, entitled "Conversation and Dialogue", contains papers presented at the conference in a separate workshop of the same name, linked by a common methodological framework of "Conversation Analysis". This book provides essential texts for researchers in the field of Latin linguistics and may also be of use to linguists who work primarily with other languages.

Book excerpt: These volumes contain a selection of contributions first presented at the 21st International Colloquium on Latin Linguistics, held in Santiago de Compostela (2022). They cover essential topics in Latin linguistics from a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. The first volume includes papers on Latin Syntax and Semantics, Latin Syntax and Pragmatics, Greek-Latin language, and Digital Linguistics. The contributions report on the latest research into very relevant issues in specific areas such as definiteness, casual syntax, sentence structure, word order, etc.; in addition, the most recent methodological advances using a variety of databases, a key tool in contemporary research, are presented. The second volume includes papers on Semantics and Lexicography, Etymology, Discourse strategies, and a special section devoted to the analysis of Conversation and Dialogue. The contributions report on the latest research into highly relevant issues in specific areas such as nominal and adjectival lexicology from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspectives, the use of Greek words as a vehicle for the expression of philosophical concepts, the choice and rendering of various linguistic strategies in direct and indirect discourse, etc. A particularly innovative section deals with various aspects of conversational language in a number of text types, as well as the use of different devices that contribute to the expression of (im)politeness by participants in the speech act. A knowledge of the work collected in these volumes is essential for all those involved in research in the field of Latin linguistics.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Latin Syntax by : Harm Pinkster
Download or read book The Oxford Latin Syntax written by Harm Pinkster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 1280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this two-volume work, the first full-scale treatment of its kind in English, Harm Pinkster applies contemporary linguistic theories and the findings of traditional grammar to the study of Latin syntax. He takes a non-technical and principally descriptive approach, based on literary and non-literary texts dating from c.250 BC to c.450 AD. The volumes contain a wealth of examples to illustrate the grammatical phenomena under discussion, many of them from the works of Plautus and Cicero, alongside extensive references to other sources of examples such as the Oxford Latin Dictionary and the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae. While the first volume explored the simple clause, this second volume focuses on the complex sentence and discourse. The first three chapters examine different types of subordinate clause; the following four then explore relative clauses, coordination, comparison, and secondary predicates. Later chapters investigate information structure and extraclausal expressions, word order, and discourse and related features. The Oxford Latin Syntax will be a valuable and up-to-date resource both for professional Latinists and all linguists with an interest in Classics.
Book Synopsis The Oxford History of Romanian Morphology by : Martin Maiden
Download or read book The Oxford History of Romanian Morphology written by Martin Maiden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive account of the development of the Romanian morphological system. Romanian is one of the most morphologically complex Romance languages, but has remained relatively understudied compared with better-known languages such as French and Spanish. Following an introduction that provides an outline of the history of Romanian, its writing system and major typological characteristics, and the major patterns of allomorphy, chapters in this volume explore a range of fascinatingly complex aspects of Romanian grammar whose structure and history have to date been largely inaccessible to the English-speaking world. Among the most distinctive morphological characteristics of Romanian discussed by the authors are its inflexional case system; the highly unpredictable formation of the plural; the existence of a non-finite verb form that appears to be the continuation of the Latin supine; the near-absence of distinctive subjunctive morphology; and the complex patterns of allomorphy brought about by successive sound change. The frequently controversial origins of many of these developments have important implications for broader historical Romance linguistics and indeed for morphological theory more generally.
Book Synopsis The Noun Phrase in Classical Latin Prose by : Olga Spevak
Download or read book The Noun Phrase in Classical Latin Prose written by Olga Spevak and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal ordering of Latin noun phrases is very flexible in comparison with modern European languages. Whereas there are a number of studies devoted to the variable placement of modifiers, The Noun Phrase in Classical Latin Prose proposes an entirely new approach: a discussion of the semantic and syntactic properties of both nouns and modifiers. Using recent insights in general linguistics, it argues that not only pragmatic factors but also semantic factors (whether we are dealing with an inherent property, the author’s assessment, or a further specification of a referent) are responsible for the internal ordering of Latin noun phrases. Additionally, this book discusses prepositional phrases functioning as modifiers, and appositions, which have received little attention in the literature.
Book Synopsis Lexique. Lexicologie. Lexicographie. by : Pierre Swiggers
Download or read book Lexique. Lexicologie. Lexicographie. written by Pierre Swiggers and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A joke, one might think, knowing that ancient grammar famously lacked a syntactic component. Not so, say the scholars: the very absence of the category syntax calls for theoretical and historical analysis, and a scratch at the surface reveals that ancient grammarians did indeed recognize and deal with various aspects of syntax. The 16 papers, five of them in English and the others in German or French, look at syntactic description and reflection in antiquity, Alexandrian grammarians and syntax, virtues and vices of speech, and the Latin and Byzantine heritage. Book Synopsis History of Linguistics 2014 by : Carlos Assunção
Download or read book History of Linguistics 2014 written by Carlos Assunção and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a selection of 20 out of altogether 170 papers presented at the 13th International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences (ICHoLS XIII), held at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro in Vila Real, Portugal, 25–29 August 2014. It is divided chronologically into four parts, ranging from classical antiquity to the end of the 20th century. Part I deals with general and theoretical topics in the history of linguistics in the United States, in Brazil, and the fields of lexicography and the relation of gesture to thought and language. Part II examines aspects of ancient Greek and Latin grammars, the concept of interjection from antiquity to humanism, and the classification of the parts of speech in the classical Sanskrit grammars. Part III focuses on 16th-century Latin-Portuguese grammaticography, the importance of 17th-century plurilingual textbooks, as well as two papers dedicated to French idéologues and their participation in late 18th-century prize competitions. Part IV is devoted to the works of 19th to late 20th-century European grammarians, philosophers, logicians and linguists, as well as some 19th-century Chilean grammarians and lexicographers of the Spanish language.

Book Synopsis The Semantics of Dynamic Space in French by : Michel Aurnague
Download or read book The Semantics of Dynamic Space in French written by Michel Aurnague and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the semantics of spatial markers in French is known mainly through Vandeloise’s (1986, 1991) work on static prepositions. However, interest in the expression of space in French goes back to the mid-1970s and focused first on verbs denoting changes in space, whose syntactic properties were related to specific semantic distinctions, such as the opposition between “movement” and “displacement”. This volume provides an overview of recent studies on the semantics of dynamic space in French and addresses important questions about motion expression, among which “goal bias” and asymmetry of motion, the status of locative PPs, the expression of manner, fictive or non-actual motion. Descriptive, experimental and formal or computational analyses are presented, providing complementary perspectives on the main issue. The volume is intended for researchers and advanced students wishing to learn about both spatial semantics in French and recent debates on the representation of motion events in language and cognition.
Book Synopsis Sabellian Demonstratives by : Emmanuel Dupraz
Download or read book Sabellian Demonstratives written by Emmanuel Dupraz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past research on the Sabellian languages has been devoted mainly to the phonetic and morphological features of these languages as elements for the reconstruction of the prehistoric stages of Latin. The present book aims at analysing the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic features of a subset of grammatical terms, the demonstratives. It contains a thorough description of their synchronic behaviour, which permits both a comparison to the Latin data with new hypotheses on the epigraphic genres in Republican Italy and a reconstruction of the Italic origins of these terms based on typological principles. Neither the grammar of Sabellian nor the pragmatic scope of the Sabellian inscriptions should be considered a priori identical to their Latin comparanda.
Book Synopsis Latin Linguistics and Linguistic Theory by : Harm Pinkster
Download or read book Latin Linguistics and Linguistic Theory written by Harm Pinkster and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles of this collection on Latin linguistics are representative of the kind of research that is currently carried out in the field of linguistics. Most deal with syntax or sentence structure, but they vary with respect to their emphasis on theory or description. They also vary with respect to the grammatical framework with which they are formulated, with some preponderance of transformational generative approaches. All papers are well-informed about the major developments in contemporary linguistics and make extensive use of recent methods and types of argumentation. In the introduction the volume editor briefly reviews the present state of Latin linguistics, starting with a section on the question whether it is possible to conduct up-to-date linguistic research for Latin at all. To be followed by a brief sketch of the impact of recent linguistic theories on Latin linguistics in general, and in a final third section an outline is presented of the possible interest the contributions to this volume may have for linguists working on languages other than Latin
