Book Synopsis The Pastoral Epistles by : I. Howard Marshall
Download or read book The Pastoral Epistles written by I. Howard Marshall and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-06-15 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over one hundred years, the International Critical Commentary series has held a special place among works on the Bible. It has sought to bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis — linguistic and textual no less than archaeological, historical, literary and theological—with a level of comprehension and quality of scholarship unmatched by any other series. No attempt has been made to secure a uniform theological or critical approach to the biblical text: contributors have been invited for their scholarly distinction, not for their adherence to any one school of thought. The first paperback editions to be published cover the heart of the New Testament, providing a wealth of information and research in accessible and attractive format.

Book Synopsis The First and Second Letters to Timothy by : Jerome D. Quinn
Download or read book The First and Second Letters to Timothy written by Jerome D. Quinn and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inaugural volume of the ECC series provides a fresh, readable translation of 1 and 2 Timothy together with notes and commentary on this highly relevant section of Scripture. The Notes section of the commentary offers detailed philological analysis of the majority of the words used in these two Pastoral Epistles. The Comment section guides readers through the complex theological, historical, and practical issues facing the heirs of Paul in the Christian church. The issues treated in 1 and 2 Timothy have a remarkably modern ring to them. Addressing such "contemporary" topics as the qualifications for church leadership, the roles of women, the use of wealth, heterodoxy, worship, and ethics, these Pauline letters remain highly relevant to church life today. This new volume not only offers the best of current biblical scholarship on Paul's letters to Timothy but also demonstrates the high standard of excellence marking the ECC series.
Book Synopsis The Ethical Seduction of the Analytic Situation by : Viviane Chetrit-Vatine
Download or read book The Ethical Seduction of the Analytic Situation written by Viviane Chetrit-Vatine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Jacques Andre, "the patient's encounter with the analyst is a scene of seduction, the seductive statement being that of the fundamental rule or the invitation to address that which is most intimate or personal to a complete stranger." But the practice of psychoanalysis can only unfold if there is a strict respect for ethics. The words seduction and ethics, which at first sight seem mutually exclusive, are thus, as the author shows, at the heart of the analytic perspective. The author takes as her starting-point an encounter, which is not necessarily consensual, between Emmanuel Levinas' thought and his conception of philosophy as ethics - ethics understood as responsibility for the other - and that of the psychoanalyst Jean Laplanche, who posits the first adult other as a seducer of the young psyche from the outset, due to the transmission of enigmatic messages compromised by his or her unconscious. The analyst's ethical position is re-examined and with it the feminine/maternal origins of the human capacity for responsibility for the other.

Book Synopsis Everyday Political Objects by : Christopher Fletcher
Download or read book Everyday Political Objects written by Christopher Fletcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Political Objects examines a series of historical case studies across a very broad timescale, using objects as a means to develop different approaches to understanding politics where both internal and external definitions of the political prove inadequate. Materiality and objects have gradually made their way into the historian’s toolbox in recent years, but the distinctive contribution that a set of methods developed for the study of objects can make to our understanding of politics has yet to be explored. This book shows how everyday objects play a certain role in politics, which is specific to material things. It provides case studies which re-orientate the view of the political in a way that is distinct from, but complementary to, the study of political institutions, the social history of politics and the analysis of discourse. Each chapter shows, in a distinctive and innovative way, how historians might change their approach to politics by incorporating objects into their methodology. Analysing case studies from France, the Congo, Burkina Faso, Romania and Britain between the early Middle Ages and the present day makes this study the perfect tool for students and scholars in the disciplines of history, art history, political science, anthropology and archaeology. Book Synopsis Killing the Elites by : Jean-Philippe Belleau
Download or read book Killing the Elites written by Jean-Philippe Belleau and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer and fall of 1964, a massacre took place in the small town of Jérémie, Haiti. After an ill-fated uprising, the brutal regime of François “Papa Doc” Duvalier ordered reprisals against the town that some of the insurgents were allegedly from. Entire families—all from the town’s upper class—were slaughtered. Through a rich historical ethnography of the massacre, Jean-Philippe Belleau offers a new account of the workings of the Duvalier regime and an innovative analysis of anti-elite violence. Killing the Elites meticulously reconstructs the various phases of the massacre, identifying the victims and perpetrators, tracing the social ties that linked them, and examining the varying degrees of culpability from the state to bystanders. Although Duvalier and the military were responsible, the killings were attributed to popular social grievances. Examining how the Haitian state has brutalized the upper classes, Belleau develops a new theory of anti-elite violence. He challenges views that ideology or social difference can readily drive people to kill their neighbors and that the upper classes fall victim to popular rough justice, showing that social bonds within the town prevented organized violence from spreading. The state, Belleau underscores, is the primary perpetrator of violence against elites. Drawing on interviews with eyewitnesses and former regime members as well as a wide range of unexplored primary sources, this book provides a new lens on Haiti under Duvalier and reveals why the victimization of the elite is essential to mass violence.

Book Synopsis Origins of the Witches’ Sabbath by : Michael D. Bailey
Download or read book Origins of the Witches’ Sabbath written by Michael D. Bailey and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the perception of magic as harmful is age-old, the notion of witches gathering together in large numbers, overtly worshiping demons, and receiving instruction in how to work harmful magic as part of a conspiratorial plot against Christian society was an innovation of the early fifteenth century. The sources collected in this book reveal this concept in its formative stages. The idea that witches were members of organized heretical sects or part of a vast diabolical conspiracy crystalized most clearly in a handful of texts written in the 1430s and clustered geographically around the arc of the western Alps. Michael D. Bailey presents accessible English translations of the five oldest surviving texts describing the witches’ sabbath and of two witch trials from the period. These sources, some of which were previously unavailable in English or available only in incomplete or out-of-date translations, show how perceptions of witchcraft shifted from a general belief in harmful magic practiced by individuals to a conspiratorial and organized threat that led to the witch hunts that shook northern Europe and went on to influence conceptions of diabolical witchcraft for centuries to come. Origins of the Witches’ Sabbath makes freshly available a profoundly important group of texts that are key to understanding the cultural context of this dark chapter in Europe’s history. It will be especially valuable to those studying the history of witchcraft, medieval and early modern legal history, religion and theology, magic, and esotericism.
