Book excerpt: For Fernando Francés, Francisco Leiro?is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of how art can be synonymous with a commitment to life experience and autobiographical thought. Today?s society has adopted a passive, indifferent and egotistical position towards the misfortunes and miseries that occur across the globe. Leiro adopts a committed stance. He immerses himself in the reality of massacres, injustices, murders and rampant violence and imprints them on his sculptures where, whether we like it or not, we come face to face with the crude reality, with piles of dead people, innocent people who are beaten, workers who sweep away human remains from the ground or clean up after a disaster caused by humanity?.00Exhibition: Centro de Arte Contemporaneo, Málaga, Spain (06.10.2017-07.01.2018).

Book excerpt: Adriana Serannos life in New York City is not as she hoped it would be. But on a girls night out she meets the handsome Solaro through what she believes is a chance encounter; electricity sizzles the air between them. Solaro has lived 12,000 years as an elite member of the sacred Brotherhood of Light, a spiritual sect of an ancient Egyptian society. Its members stand for all that is holy, and they uphold the truths of God against the dark forces of the material world. Solaro and eleven of his brotherhood were chosen to remain on Earth for a special mission. But Solaros greatest test will be his attempt to reunite with Adriana, his soul mate from the distant past, and help her evolve into a master. Together, they will set the example to lead the human race toward a new dawn. First, she has to fall in love with him all over again. While Solaro and Adriana forge their relationship, fallen members of the White Brotherhood attempt to stop their reunion. The newly reunited lovers find their lives in danger and become immersed in a game of faith and illusion where nothing is as it seems.

Book excerpt: Focusing on pathobiology and protective strategies against protozoan and metazoan parasites of fish, this book reviews the latest research on important parasites: those that cause financial hardships to the aquaculture industry, have been introduced to new geographical regions through transportation of infected fish, are pathogenic to groups of finfish and detrimental to production, are highly adaptable and not host-specific with worldwide distributions, and that may serve as disease models for studies on other pathogens. It also highlights gaps in the knowledge to help direct future research.

Book excerpt: The Second World War saw the role of espionage, secret agents and spy services increase exponentially as the world was thrown into a conflict unlike any that had gone before it. At this time, no one in government was really aware of what MI5 and its brethren did. But with Churchill at the country's helm, it was decided to let him in on the secret, providing him with a weekly report of the spy activities. These reports were so classified that he was handed each report personally and copies were never allowed to be made, nor was he allowed to keep hold of them. Even now, the documents only exist as physical copies deep in the archives, many pages annotated by hand by 'W.S.C.' himself. In Churchill's Spy Files intelligence expert Nigel West unravels the tales of hitherto unknown spy missions, using this groundbreaking research to paint a fresh picture of the worldwide intelligence scene of the Second World War.

Book excerpt: Tunnels and Underground Cities: Engineering and Innovation meet Archaeology, Architecture and Art. Volume 2: Environment sustainability in underground construction contains the contributions presented in the eponymous Technical Session during the World Tunnel Congress 2019 (Naples, Italy, 3-9 May 2019). The use of underground space is continuing to grow, due to global urbanization, public demand for efficient transportation, and energy saving, production and distribution. The growing need for space at ground level, along with its continuous value increase and the challenges of energy saving and achieving sustainable development objectives, demand greater and better use of the underground space to ensure that it supports sustainable, resilient and more liveable cities. The contributions cover a wide range of topics, from online identification of excavation materials, management and use of materials, the integration of tunnel entrances in landscapes, to site-specific protocols for evaluating environmental compatibility of spoil materials, and the reduction of adverse effects of blasting methods on the living environment. The book is a valuable reference text for tunnelling specialists, owners, engineers, archaeologists, architects, artists and others involved in underground planning, design and building around the world, and for academics who are interested in underground constructions and geotechnics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades there have been several constructivist scholars who have looked at how norms change in international relations. However few have taken a closer look at the particular strategies that are employed to further change, or looked at the common factors that have been in play in these processes. This book seeks to further the debates by looking at both agency and structure in tandem. It focuses on the practices of linked ecologies (formal or informal alliances), undertaken by individuals who are the constitutive parts of norm change processes and who have moved between international organizations, academic institutions, think tanks, NGOs and member states. The book sheds new light on how norm change comes about, focusing on the practices of individual actors as well as collective ones. The book draws attention to the role of practices in UN peacekeeping missions and how these may create a bottom–up influence on norm change in UN peacekeeping, and the complex interplay between government and UN officials, applied and academic researchers, and civil society activists forming linked ecologies in processes of norm change. With this contribution, the study further expands the understanding of which actors have agency and what sources of authority they draw on in norm change processes in international organizations. A significant contribution to the study of international organizations and UN peacekeeping, as well as to the broader questions of global norms in IR, this work will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How activists in Ghana, South Africa, and Brazil provide inspiration and strategies for combating the gender violence epidemic in the United States How can the U.S. learn from the perspectives of anti-gender violence activists in South America and Africa as we seek to end intimate violence in this country? The U.S. has consistently positioned itself as a moral exemplar, seeking to export its philosophy and values to other societies. Yet in this book, Traci C. West argues that the U.S. has much to learn from other countries when it comes to addressing gender-based violence. West traveled to Ghana, South Africa, and Brazil to interview activists involved in the struggle against gender violence. In each of these places, as in the United States, Christianity and anti-black racism have been implicated in violence against women. In Ghana and Brazil, in particular, their Christian colonial and trans-Atlantic slave trade histories directly connect with the socioeconomic development of the Americas and historic incidents of rape of black slave women. With a transnational focus on religion and racism, West brings a new perspective to efforts to systemically combat gender violence. Calling attention to forms of violence in the U.S. and international settings, such as marital rape, sex trafficking of women and girls, domestic violence, and the targeting of lesbians, the book offers an expansive and nuanced view of how to form activist solidarity in tackling this violence. It features bold and inspiring approaches by black women leaders working in each setting to uproot the myriad forms of violence against women and girls. Ultimately, West calls for us to learn from the lessons of Africana activists, drawing on a defiant Africana spirituality as an invaluable resource in the quest to combat the seemingly chronic problem of gender-based violence.
