This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this book is to provide an overview of child and adolescent psychiatry in Europe, focusing on the historical development, current situation, and future perspectives of the specialty. Child and adolescent psychiatry is now acknowledged as a medical specialty or subspecialty in almost all European countries. Also, the number of child psychia trists has increased dramatically over the last decade. However, there are still enormous differences from country to country, not only with regard to the num ber of specialists, but also with regard to the extent and nature of services provided and their diagnostic and therapeutic orientation. Furthermore, important differ ences exist in the training curricula for child and adolescent psychiatry within medicine and other professional fields, both inside and outside the universities, and in the image and importance of this discipline to the public. This diversity is also reflected in the reports on the historical development, current situation and future perspectives of child and adolescent psychiatry in 31 European countries, all following the same structure in order to facilitate compa rability. This structure comprises (1) the historical development and the current situation, (2) classification systems and diagnostic and therapeutic methods, (3) structure and organization of services, (4) cooperation with other medical and non-medical disciplines, (5) training and continuing medical education, (6) research, and (7) future perspectives.

Book Synopsis Childhood and Adolescent Psychosis by : Dieter Bürgin
Download or read book Childhood and Adolescent Psychosis written by Dieter Bürgin and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recognition and optimal management of early psychosis in adolescence is of great importance not only for its adequate diagnosis and treatment, but also for suicide prevention. In this volume, the latest understandings are reviewed by specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry. It discusses questions such as why schizophrenic psychosis has to be differentiated from borderline personality disorders; why the problem-solving strategy in early detection of neurocognitive disorders and neuropsychiatric behavioural disorders is also relevant for the development of a clinical view of the psychotic process. Further contributions point out the choice of specific individual psychotherapeutic techniques as well as why childhood psychosis needs a full inclusion of the family in the diagnostic and therapeutic process. This publication gives a stimulating overview of the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of psychotic disturbances in adolescence. Child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatrists as well as paediatricians will find it inspiring reading.

Book Synopsis Brain and Behavior in Child Psychiatry by : Aribert Rothenberger
Download or read book Brain and Behavior in Child Psychiatry written by Aribert Rothenberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brain-What Else! All senses are connected with the brain. From sense-perception derives . . . knowledge. In the brain is the sovereignty ofthe mind. Mind is interpreted by the brain. AIcmaeon of Croton (5th Century B. c. ) The ground is shifting under the traditional approaches to problems in the philosophy of mind. Earlier doctrines concerning the independence of cognition from the brain now appear untenable. P. S. Churchland (20th Century A. D. ) It is not objective of this volume to discuss the history and significance of neuroscience for philosophy from a developmental perspective, although this would be a rather interesting topic. Its object is the relationship between brain and behavior in children as exhibited by higher mental functions (e. g. , speech and language; reasoning, perception, free will and control of motor acts, dependence of behavior on neuronal constraints, the self of the child and therapeutic acti vi ties). Child psychiatrists commonly allude to the brain as the site of disturbance responsible for many developmental disabilities and psychopathological syn dromes identifiable by observing behavior (e. g. , dyslexia, delusions), neurological examination (e. g. , soft signs), psychological test performance (e. g. , Bender Gestalt Test), EEG (e. g. , alpha-theta ratio), and CCT (e. g. , pseudoatrophy). While there is nothing inherently wrong with such inferences, the fact is frequently overlooked that there is no specific set of brain-behavior relationships validating these inferences.

Book excerpt: Based on information gathered from the internationally used Spiritual Needs Questionnaire, this book offers analyses of the spiritual and existential needs among different groups of people such as the chronically ill, elderly, adolescents, mothers of sick children, refugees, patients' relatives, and others. Book Synopsis Racism in Schools by : Matthias Böhmer
Download or read book Racism in Schools written by Matthias Böhmer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racism, i.e. discrimination against people on the basis of their supposed ethnic origin, is omnipresent in schools. Apart from students, trainees and teachers, all actors in the school context are affected by this topic. Why is this so? How can racist discrimination be explained? What effects does this behavior have on those affected? And how can schools counteract it? These are all questions that arise and which this book aims to answer with the intention of enabling all those acting in the school context to critically examine their own knowledge bases relevant to racism. This book contributes to the development of school as a racism-sensitive space in which all actors behave in a racism-sensitive manner. Therefore, in addition to an overview of the history of racism, approaches to explaining racist behavior and the effects of racist discrimination, prevention and intervention approaches for a practice critical of racism in schools are presented.

Book Synopsis Childhood and Trauma by : Elisabeth Ullmann
Download or read book Childhood and Trauma written by Elisabeth Ullmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published 1999, this book attempts to answer these questions and takes a broad approach to the subject of "Childhood and Trauma". It examines in detail separation, sexual abuse and war, all of which are particularly traumatizing to children, and how they are dealt with in different cultures. In addition to describing the causes and impacts of trauma, the book also gives special attention to healing and helping traumatized children. One chapter deals solely with how to support professional caregivers who live and work with affected children. Another aim of the book is to use the practical experience of SOS Children’s Villages to illustrate the possibilities and limits of professional care and therapy for traumatized children. The Book comprises a total of 17 articles provided by authors from eight different countries and pursues both a practical and theoretical approach to the problems mentioned above. "Children and Trauma" is intended for psychologists, psychotherapists, educators, social workers as well as a broader audience of professional caregivers and anyone interested in the subject.
