Book excerpt: Streetcar service arrived in Philadelphia in the 1850s, shortly after the consolidation of the city. After the Civil War, the horse-drawn omnibus gave way to a comprehensive network of streetcar lines with some routes measuring nineteen miles in length. By 1915, the electrification of the streetcar increased the number of routes in Philadelphia to a total of eighty-six. During the trolley's heyday, the city provided a vast test track for such companies as J.G. Brill, Kimball and Gorton Car Manufacturers, and the Budd Wheel Company. The Wharton Railroad Switch Company revolutionized the manufacture of switches and tracks. Of the lines that once operated in Philadelphia, five are still running today. Philadelphia Trolleys contains a variety of rare images, including a postcard of the Point Breeze Amusement Park, photographs of motormen's uniform badges and buttons, architectural drawings, early stock certificates, and a photograph of the Toonerville Trolley used in the silent movies produced by Lubin Studios in the 1920s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located midway between Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley, Souderton was settled by predominantly German immigrants. Farmers and craftsmen with an entrepreneurial spirit, they took full advantage of opportunities to provide goods and services to a growing community. In 1852, Henry O. Souder offered the free use of his land to the North Penn Railroad, diverting the Gwynedd to Bethlehem route through the bountiful Indian Valley and transforming Souderton into a lively commercial center. Incorporated in 1887, the borough soon boasted a booming economy. First a hub for cigar manufacturing and later textiles, Souderton rapidly expanded. Feed mills, lumberyards, bakeries, a bank, and a large department-store-lined Main Street. Today, these same stores and mills house a new generation of artists, designers, and impresarios, reflecting a vibrant, enterprising downtown. Souderton traces the commercial evolution of the town while capturing the remarkable people and events that created this community and transformed Main Street--the hill and the hollow--from the site of a colorful soapbox derby to the venue of an international cycling Grand Prix.

These trolley lines traversed miles of narrow streets lined with row houses whose residents were proud working-class Americans. These historic photographs trace the trolley cars routes, including Route 23, the regions longest urban trolley route, from the expanses of Northwest Philadelphias Chestnut Hill through the crowded commercial Center City to South Philadelphia with a variety of neighborhood stops at everything in between. Southeastern Pennsylvania Trolleys follows the history of the trolley cars that have served this diverse and historic region.

Book Synopsis Bethlehem by : Bethlehem Area Public Library

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bethlehem, Pennslyvania, has a fascinating history that is steeped in tradition. The city was founded in 1741 by the Moravians, a Protestant group. They envisioned Bethlehem as an industrial center, a support center for missionaries, and as the headquaters for the Moravian Church in North America. Bethlehem became all of this and more. Moravian traditions are still strong in this town, from the preservation of the original stone buildings on Church Street to the sounds of the Trombone Choir on Easter morning. Yet with the arrival of industrialists and immigrants to the area, Bethlehem evolved into something more. Canals, railroads, steel mills, and silk mills all became part of the city' story. The little town grew into a city with a diverse population. In the process, Bethlehem eveolved into a graceful place, famous for its institutions of higher learning, for steel production, and for Bach. Bethlehem covers the period between 1845 through 1990. It is a reinterpretation of teh photograph exhibit that graced the windows of the Bethlehem Area Public Library during the city's 250th anniversary celebration. The original exhibit consisted of 350 photographs, selected from more than 600 submitted by area residents. This book includes a selection of 217 photographs from that exhibit.
