Download or read book Relative Visibility of Increased Legend Size Vs. Brighter Materials for Traffic Signs written by Douglas J. Mace and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static and dynamic legibility studies were conducted to investigate the effects of level of reflectivity, letter series, stroke width, letter spacing, font, letter height, and driver age. The dynamic study also considered the effect of sign size and retroreflectivity on the level of conspicuity. As expected, driver age had the largest effect on both legibility and conspicuity. In fact, the daytime legibility for older drivers is almost as poor as night legibility. Level of retroreflectivity, letter series, and letter height all had a significant effect on legibility. Increases in letter height resulted in proportionate increases in legibility up to about 600 ft (183 m).

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to investigate ways of increasing the legibility of signs with high background brightness. Research was limited to silver, yellow, and orange encapsulated lens sheeting materials, and modifications were made within the standards for highway signs as specified in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The results of the study show that in Virginia the legibility of selected signs with high background brightness can be increased by modifying the letter design.

Download or read book Some Measures for Improving Night Visibility at Highway Intersections written by Nari K. Vaswani and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through selected case studies, this report illustrates how the inadequate visibility of road signs and pavement markings at night contributes to wrong-way driving. A concept termed "keg of legibility" for visibility at night has been developed by the author to delineate the limits of night visibility under low beam headlights. The report discusses the application of the keg of legibility to the placement of signs, markings, and additional devices that can be used to help inform the motorist who is to negotiate a four-lane divided highway and to guide him through the intersection. Cases of poor road geometrics are cited to emphasize the need for such information and guidance.
