This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein are 162 folk and fairy tales, customs and traditions of Brittany, France compiled and retold by Lewis Spence. In this volume you will find legends of heroes and Saints, King Arthur, his sword Excalibur and of the Isle of Avalon; as well as ballads, legends and romances of Counts, Dukes, Princes and Kings, tales of their castles, adventures, loves and lovers, sorceresses, wizards plus many, many more. The 162 legends are grouped into 13 sections which are as follows: I - The Land, the People and their Story II - Menhirs and Dolmens III - The Fairies of Brittany IV - Sprites And Demons of Brittany V - World-Tales in Brittany VI - Breton Folk-Tales VII - Popular Legends of Brittany VIII - Hero-Tales of Brittany IX - The Black Art and Its Ministers X - Arthurian Romance in Brittany XI - The Breton Lays of Marie De France XII - The Saints of Brittany XIII - Costumes and Customs of Brittany In typical Spence style we are provided with ample background to the stories which provides valuable insights to the times, although I would not bemoan any young reader who skims over these and goes straight to the legends themselves. The 32 colour and BnW plates by W. Otway Cannell, portrayed in a classic style, are entirely suited to the era from which these tales come. This volume is sure to keep you enchanted for hours, if not because of the quantity, then because of the quality of the tales and legends, which will have you coming back for more. ============ TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, romances, Brittany, France, breton tongue, ancient, armoricans, Samson, wax for wine, vision, jud-hael, Taliesin, hervé, blind, nomenoe, alain barbe-torte, norman, poison, hunting-horn, war, two joans, bertrand du Guesclin, ward, du Guesclin, death of marguerite, castle of trogoff, anne, menhirs, dolmens, monuments, legend of dol, subterranean, dolmen chapel, camaret, carnac, mont-saint-michel, rocenaud, cup-and-ring, markings, gallery gavr’inis, ile aux moines, fairy builders, stones that travel, broceliande, korrigan, seigneur of nann, goddess of eld, unbroken vow, merlin, vivien, fountain of baranton, bruno of la montagne, lost daughter, fisherman, changelings, king of the fishes, queen, prince, princess, origins, margots, serve, sprites, demons, nain, crions, courils, gorics, teurst, Nicole, mourioche, ankou, youdic, world-tales, youth, did not know, tronkolaine, starbright, castle of the sun, seigneur , horse's head, bride of satan, baron of jauioz, man of honour, magic rose, norouas, north-west wind, foster-brother, gilles de retz, comorre the cursed, ys, rohan, lady of la garaye, falcon, marquis of guérande, châteaux, la roche-jagu, clisson, josselin, hennebont, largoet, chateaubriand, palaces, past, suscino, lez-breiz, morvan, adventure, king's cavalier, blackamoor, severed head, ballad of bran, fontenelle, return, marriage-girdle, combat, saint-cast, song of the pilot, druidic magic, abelard, Heloise, hymn, nantes, magicians, Arthur, sword, Excalibur, tristrem, tristram, ysonde, isolda, forester, ermonie, moraunt, fytte, minstrel, boon, forest lovers, manuscript, giant, mont-saint-michel, doubting Thomas, dragon, isle of Avalon, were-wolf, superstition, lay of gugemar, laustic, eliduc, equitant, ash-tree, graelent, dolorous knight, st barbe, st convoyon, steal, relics, tivisiau, hepherd saint, st nennocha, st enora, corseul, accursed, st keenan, st Nicholas, st bieuzy, st leonorius, st patern, st Samson, lawyer saint, st budoc, dol, miraculous, crossings, azenor the pale, st pol, léon, st ronan, st goezenou, st winwaloe, gwenaloe, tartarus, paradise

This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child Christopher and Goldilind the Fair is a fantasy novel by William Morris, perhaps the first modern fantasy writer to unite an imaginary world with an element of the supernatural, and thus the precursor of much of present-day fantasy literature. It was first published in hardcover by Morris' Kelmscott Press in 1895. The novel, with its development of a royal character unaware of their true status, had an influence on C.S. Lewis’ Prince Caspian in the Narnia series. Set in the forested land of Oakenrealm, it was Morris' reimagining and recasting of the medieval Lay of Havelock the Dane with the displaced royal heirs Christopher and Goldilind standing in for the original story's Havelock and Goldborough. However, unlike the original, Morris puts more emphasis on the romantic side of the story giving a prominent place to the heroine's misfortunes and bringing to the forefront the love story between her and the hero; the warfare by which the hero regains his heritage is relegated to a secondary role. Also unlike both the source and most of Morris's other fantasies, there is little or no supernatural element in this version of the story. Christopher is initially ignorant of his true identity, leading to an emotional conflict between the protagonists to reconcile their mutual love and attraction with what they believe to be the profound disparity in their social status and shame of their forced marriage. This situation is resolved when the two fall in with Jack of the Tofts, who gives refuge to Christopher after his sons rescue the hero from an assassination attempt by a servant of the usurper Earl Rolf. Jack informs Christopher of his true station and gathers together an army to help him challenge the usurper. When the hosts meet, the commander of Rolf's forces, Baron Gandolf of Brimside, challenges Jack to single combat, but Christopher claims the honor from Jack and proves his worth by defeating the opposing champion. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charity. ================= KEYWORDS/TAGS: Child Christopher, Goldilind the Fair, lay of Havelock, Dane, royalty, Oakenrealm, Goldborough, William Morris, romance, misfortune, knights, warfare, regains, crown, king, queen, love, Jack of the Tofts, refuge, usurper, Earl Rolf, army, challenge, Baron Gandolf, Brimside, single combat, King Of Oakenrealm, Wife And Child, Son, King Of Meadham, Daughter, Maiden Goldilind, Greenharbour, Dreams, Castle, Journey, Wild Wood, Squire Simon, Earl Marshal, Littledale, Abide, A While, May Morning, The Garth, Free, Found, Earl Geoffrey, Wedding, Woodland, Bride-Chamber, Friends, Counsel, Husting, Hosting, Hazeldale, Holm Of Hazeldale, Battle, Holm, Captains, Broadlees, Woodwall, Old Acquaintance, Evil Deed, King Christopher, Dealings, Matters, Meadham,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can imagine the scene. It is a late April evening. Everyone has gathered at Perik's house. Someone has finished singing an old tune and a festive joy reigns in the house. The young Emile Souvestre, lawyer and journalist, is ready with his notebook and prepares to record in shorthand the story that follows. The light of the fire illuminates Annick's face -everyone is expectant- and she begins the tale: "Long, long ago, ere the acorns were sown which have since furnished timber for the oldest vessels of the port of Brest, there lived in the parish of Guirek a poor widow..."These are the stories and legends that are told next to the fireplace. Brittany is the land where the tales of goblins and fairies and ancient druidic rituals intersect with the Christian faith, giving its stories a unique and characteristic flavor. We offer here a selection of those published in 1844, by Emile Souvestre in his "Foyer Breton"
