Book excerpt: Ghosts traces the cultural and literary origins of the paranormal, reveals the secrets behind many mysterious myths and legends, and analyzes our continued fascination with visitors from the other side. With chapters on the origins of ghosts, poltergeists, ghosts from around the world, exorcism, haunted houses, and more, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. Belief in ghosts is nothing new. Uncertainty surrounding death is part of the human condition and the existence of an afterlife is deeply rooted in most worldwide cultures and religions. In Taoism and Buddhism, the Hungry Ghost Festival celebrates the belief that, once a year, ghosts and spirits are released from the afterlife and walk among the living. In the west, ghost stories were established in ancient folklore and tend to embrace the same classic themes as today's horror movies: romance, tragedy, and terror. Writers of antiquity used ghosts and hauntings as a way to provide background information or foretell coming events, and Shakespeare, the father of English literature, used the same techniques in his plays. Glamis Castle, the infamous haunted Scottish setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth, is said to be on of the most nerve-wracking places on earth—but are these feelings imagined or real? At one time or another, most people have experienced a creepy, spine tingling, someone's watching you sort of sensation that they can't explain. Scientists may try to account for these fears by attributing them to the natural fear of the unknown. Cold spots are nothing more than an open window and creaking floorboards are nothing more than old wood shifting in place. Regardless, millions of people believe that there is much more to these strange phenomenons than can be explained by modern science. And really, who can say that they're wrong? Be informed, entertained, and frightened by this comprehensive volume about "the other side."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Haunted Burlington shares Lake Champlain’s chilling history—from swashbuckling spirits to Champ, “North America’s Loch Ness Monster.” Lake Champlain is located between New York’s majestic Adirondacks and Vermont’s famed Green Mountains. Yet despite the beauty of this region, it has been the site of dark and mysterious events; it is not surprising that some spirits linger in this otherwise tranquil place. Fort Ticonderoga saw some of early America’s bloodiest battles, and American, French and British ghosts still stand guard. A spirit walks the halls of SUNY Plattsburgh, even after his original haunt burned in 1929. Champlain’s islands—Stave, Crab, Valcour and Garden—all host otherworldly inhabitants, and unidentified creatures and objects have made appearances on the water, in the sky and in the forests surrounding the lake. Join Burlington’s Thea Lewis as she explores the ghosts and legends that haunt Lake Champlain. Includes photos! “For Lewis, a gifted storyteller, a good story makes a haunted place all the more compelling.” —Happy Vermont

This book was released on 2010 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This challenging book brings to light a mythic dimension of seventeen important eighteenth and early nineteenth-century narratives that revolve around the persecution of one or more important female characters, and offers original reading of novels by Richardson, Fielding, Burney, Radcliffe, Godwin, Austen, Scott, and others. The myth in question, which Raymond Hilliard calls "the myth of persecution and reparation," serves as a major vehicle for the early novel's preoccupation with the "mother," a mythic figure distinct from the historical mother or from the mother as she is represented in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century maternal ideology. Hilliard argues that the myth of persecution and reparation derives from the ropos of female sacrifice in the romance tradition, and shows that this topos is central to several kinds of novels-realist, Gothic, Jacobin, feminist, and historical. Hilliard contends that the narrative of persecution and reparation anticipates the twentieth-century maternal myth associated with the work of Melanie Klein and other "relational model" psychoanalytic theorists, and he thus also examines the psychosexual significance of the "mother." Hilliard explores the relation of psychosexual themes to social representations, and delineates a new theory of plot-both tragic and comic plots- in the early novel. --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout the whole vast shadowy world of ghosts and demons there is no figure so terrible, no figure so dreaded and abhorred, yet [looked upon] with such fearful fascination, as the vampire, who is himself neither ghost nor demon, but yet who partakes the dark natures and possesses the mysterious and terrible qualities of both." So begins this riveting study by one of the foremost authorities on witchcraft and occult phenomena. An indefatigable researcher, Summers explores the presence of vampires in Greek and Roman lore, in England and Ireland during Anglo-Saxon times, in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Romania, and Bulgaria, even in modern Greece. More than just a collection of library lore, however, this detailed examination of the history of vampirism in Europe also includes anecdotes and firsthand accounts gathered by the author from peasants in places where belief in vampires was still common. A fascinating, sometimes terrifying book, The Vampire in Lore and Legend is a "mine of out-of-the-way information full of unspeakable tales," writes The New York Times; and according to Outlook, "a fascinating inquiry into the vampire legend . . . a storehouse of curious and interesting lore." Of great interest to any enthusiast of the supernatural and the occult, this book will appeal as well to the legions of general readers captivated by this ancient myth.

Book excerpt: The 'Halloween Boxed Set: 200+ Horror Classics & Supernatural Mysteries' serves as a monumental gathering of the eerie, the spectral, and the outright terrifying, spanning across centuries of literary tradition. With an incredible breadth of styles from gothic to psychological horror, and supernatural to the cosmic, this collection weaves diverse strands of horror literature into a cohesive tapestry that highlights the evolution of the genre. The anthology showcases seminal works that have defined horror, alongside lesser-known gems that provide fresh perspectives, thereby offering readers a comprehensive journey through the shadows of literary brilliance. The assemblage of authors represented in this collection reads like a veritable who's who of literary giants, ranging from the dark romanticism of Edgar Allan Poe to the cosmic dread of H.P. Lovecraft, alongside pivotal figures like Mary Shelley, whose 'Frankenstein' arguably birthed the genre of science fiction horror. This gathering of voices, each contributing uniquely to their era's stylistic and thematic concerns, mirrors significant cultural and literary movements from the enlightenment's engagement with the supernatural to the modernist exploration of existential dread. Their collective works serve not just as entertainment but as cultural documents that reflect humanity's perennial fascination with the macabre. For aficionados of horror and students of literature alike, the 'Halloween Boxed Set' presents an unparalleled opportunity to explore the depths of human fear, imagination, and our fascination with the supernatural. It promises not just moments of gripping terror but a profound engagement with the questions that haunt the human condition. This anthology is not just a collection of stories; it is an invitation to traverse centuries of horror writing, engaging with the phantoms birthed by some of literature's most brilliant minds. Its a must-read for those looking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of horror literature, offering endless nights of wide-eyed wonder and bone-chilling excitement.
