Book excerpt: In Matthew 19:14-15, the Lord Jesus said to all of us, “Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them; for such is the kingdom of heaven. And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.” This simplified story about The Children’s Crusade was discovered by accident when the author was conducting a small dissertation on the innocent saints, or what historically was the fourth crusade in the year 1212. The name of the young pilgrim and crusader was Stephen, who had a dream about leading the crusade back to the Holy Land. The ten-year-old was persuaded and directed by an angel. Stephen accepted the mission and took it to the streets. A multitude of children, other Christian believers, and poor people followed him to northern Africa. They were taken gracefully to Jerusalem by a squad of templars and other orthodox believers, but were finally stopped and put to the test for their beliefs and perseverance. All of them never recanted their strong faith. Today we get a clear message about resilience and the strong desires that fueled The Children’s Crusade, creating a foundation for our deep and innermost Christian values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethel Pochocki, whimsically and unforgettably, presents a new set of heavenly friends to readers young and old in this third collection of Once Upon a Time Saints stories. Beginning in the dark of December, the start of the Church Year, there are stories and poems for each month, all bursting with saintly--not to mention angelic--deeds and happenings. Each tale or verse--whether of mystical apparitions in a tiny Irish village or of friars who float in the air or of entire countries single-handedly converted to Christianity--makes it quite plain that heaven doesn't keep to its place at all, but is happily determined to spill over into earthly life--here, there and . . . all around the year.

Book excerpt: Humans throughout history have sought ways of understanding their place within the world. Religion, science and myth have been at the forefront of this quest for meaning. A Chaos of Delight examines how various cultures – from the early Sumerians, Egyptians and Greeks to contemporary Western society – have looked at the same phenomena and devised totally different world views. The rise of modern science is examined, alongside questions of evolution and the origins of life. This comprehensive volume is an essential read for students and scholars interested in the history of ideas and the role of religion, science and myth in the development of Western thought.

Book excerpt: James Joyce's Ulysses is considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. This new edition - published to celebrate the book's first publication - helps readers to understand the pleasures of this monumental work and to grapple with its challenges. Copiously equipped with maps, photographs, and explanatory footnotes, it provides a vivid and illuminating context for the experiences of Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus, and Molly Bloom, as well as Joyce's many other Dublin characters, on June 16, 1904. Featuring a facsimile of the historic 1922 Shakespeare and Company text, this version also includes Joyce's own errata as well as references to amendments made in later editions. Each of the eighteen chapters of Ulysses is introduced by a leading Joyce scholar. These richly informative pieces discuss the novel's plot and allusions, while also explaining crucial questions that have puzzled and tantalized readers over the last hundred years.
