Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends, Customs and Social Life of the Seneca Indians, of Western New York The Indian, like every sensible mythologist, begins with Creation. One tribe relates how the first inhabitants - and all the first inhabitants were Indians - sprang from the heart of the earth. Another tribe has a different notion, depending, as each does, upon the whim of its own story tellers; but with the royal line of tribes - the Senecas - creation's story runs like this: In the great past, deep waters covered all indeed, every thing was water. Thousands of ducks, large and small, of every varied plumage, sailed upon these waters. What they subsisted on it matters not. One morning when the sun was shining and not a cloud was visible, high above the waters api peared a beautiful woman. Her complexion was very dark. She was falling from the unexplored and boundless ether. The ducks gathered in council, and resolved to meet the fair crea ture in the air, and break the force of her dangerous fall, by the substantial prop of their strong wings. So they rose, and, pinion overlapping pinion, gave her rest upon their backs, and sailed with their precious freight to the bosom of the placid sea below. But she must be fed, and how? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seneca myths and folk tales by Arthur C. Parker, 1923.In presenting this collection of Seneca myths and legends, the collator feels that he should explain to the general reader that he does not offer a series of tales that can be judged by present day literary standards. These Indian stories are not published for the mere entertainment of general readers, though there is much that is entertaining in them, neither are they designed as children's fables, or for supplementary reading in schools, though it is true that some of the material may be suited for the child mind. It must be understood that if readings from this book are to be made for children, a wise selection must be made. This collection is presented as an exposition of the unwritten literature of the Seneca Indians who still live in their ancestral domain in western New York. It is primarily a collection of folk-lore and is to be looked at in no other light. The professional anthropologist and historian will not need to be reminded of this. He will study these tales for their ethnological significance, and use them in making comparisons with similar collections from other tribes and stocks. In this manner he will determine the similarities or differences in theme, in episode and character. He will trace myth diffusion thereby and be able to chart the elements of the Seneca story. There is an amazing lack of authentic material on Iroquois folk-lore, though much that arrogates this name to itself has been written. The writers, however, have in general so glossed the native themes with poetic and literary interpretations that the material has shrunken in value and can scarcely be considered without many reservations. We do not pretend to have made a complete collection of all available material, but we have given a fairly representative series of myths, legends, fiction and traditions. One may examine this collection and find representative types of nearly every class of Seneca folk-lore. Multiplication is scarcely necessary. The value of this collection is not a literary one but a scientific one. It reveals the type of tale that held the interest and attention of the Seneca; it reveals certain mental traits and tendencies; it reveals many customs and incidents in native life, and finally, it serves as an index of native psychology. The enlightened mind will not be arrogant in its judgment of this material, but will see in it the attempts of a race still in mental childhood to give play to imagination and to explain by symbols what it otherwise could not express. While there is much value in this collection explaining indirectly the folk-ways and the folk-thought of the Seneca and their allied kinsmen, the whole life of the people may not be judged from these legends. Much more must be presented before such a judgment is formed. Just as we gain some knowledge of present day religions, governmental methods, social organization and political economy from the general literature of the day, but only a portion, and this unsystematized, so do we catch only a glimpse of the life story of the Seneca from their folk-tales.To complete our knowledge we must have before us works on Seneca history, ethnology, archæology, religion, government and language. Finally, we must personally know the descendents of the mighty Seneca nation of old. We must enter into the life of the people in a sympathetic way, for only then can we get at the soul of the race. While all this is true, these folk-tales are not to be despised, for they conserve many references to themes and things that otherwise would be forgotten. Folk-lore is one of the most important mines of information that the ethnologist and historian may tap. We can never understand a race until we understand what it is thinking about, and we can never know this until we know its literature, written or unwritten. The folk-tale therefore has a special value and significance, if honestly recorded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disastrous Buffalo Creek Treaty of 1838 called for the Senecas’ removal to Kansas (then part of the Indian Territory). From this low point, the Seneca Nation of Indians, which today occupies three reservations in western New York, sought to rebound. Beginning with events leading to the Seneca Revolution in 1848, which transformed the nation’s government from a council of chiefs to an elected system, Laurence M. Hauptman traces Seneca history through the New Deal. Based on the author’s nearly fifty years of archival research, interviews, and applied work, Coming Full Circle shows that Seneca leaders in these years learned valuable lessons and adapted to change, thereby preparing the nation to meet the challenges it would face in the post–World War II era, including major land loss and threats of termination. Instead of emphasizing American Indian decline, Hauptman stresses that the Senecas were actors in their own history and demonstrated cultural and political resilience. Both Native belief, in the form of the Good Message of Handsome Lake, and Christianity were major forces in Seneca life; women continued to play important social and economic roles despite the demise of clan matrons’ right to nominate the chiefs; and Senecas became involved in national and international competition in long-distance running and in lacrosse. The Seneca Nation also achieved noteworthy political successes in this period. The Senecas resisted allotment, and thus saved their reservations from breakup and sale. They recruited powerful allies, including attorneys, congressmen, journalists, and religious leaders. They saved their Oil Spring Reservation, winning a U.S. Supreme Court case against New York State on the issue of taxation and won remuneration in their Kansas Claims case. These efforts laid the groundwork for the Senecas’ postwar endeavor to seek compensation before the Indian Claims Commission and pursuit of a series of land claims and tax lawsuits against New York State.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of the Seneca Indians, to the President of the United States With the consent of the then President ofthe United States, a delegation from the society of Friends visited those Indians, and enquired into their complaints, and having gained such in formation as they could obtain, they were fully convinced that the treaty referred to, had been effected by very objection able means, without the agency or consent of a great majority ofthe Nation. Committees of Friends representing the Yearly Meetings of Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Genessee, were accordingly appointed to extend such assistance to these Indians in the premises as they might be enabled to render; the result was, that a compromise arrangement was agreed Upon between the parties, by which about fifty-three thousand acres of their land-3 were relinquished back to the Senecas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Further Illustration of the Case of the Seneca Indians in the State of New York: In a Review of a Pamphlet Entitled "an Appeal to the Christian Community, &C The Joint Committees of the four Yearly Meetings of Friends, of Genesee, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, who are charged with the concern of those meetings, for the welfare of the Indian natives, believed it to be their duty to publish a work, entitled The case of the Seneca Indians in the State of New York, illustrated by facts. We had clearly seen that the interests of these poor Indians, as well as the character of our country, were suffering, not, as We supposed, from any defect of moral feeling in the community, but because their case was almost unknown to our fellow-citizens; and of the few who understood it, some were interested in pre venting the truth from being published. We believed if the facts at that time within our knowledge, and illustrative of their case, were generally known, the virtuous part of society, in this cause of justice and humanity, would lift up a voice so loud as to be heard in the legislative halls of our country, where there is a power to prevent further injuries, and to redress past wrongs. The object of our book was what its title imports; to illustrate the case of the persecuted Seneca Indians, by laying facts before the community. To the parties, whether of the white men, or red men, engaged in the cruel work of coercing this suffering peo ple into an exile, so terrible to them, we were strangers; and certainly owed them no ill will. Many of them probably knew little or nothing of the measures pursued in their names. Some of them, we understand, are British capitalists, who perhaps neither know nor care any thing about the Indians, - their sole concern being the profits on the capital invested. Others probably are men, who, honest themselves suppose others are honest, and have taken it for granted that no unfair means would be resorted to in the prosecution of their interests.
