As the first of its kind, this centralized reference book offers wrestling enthusiasts a range of information at their fingertips and stands alone as the ultimate wrestling resource. This book offers readers a link between what happened a century ago to what is currently happening today. An older fan of Bruno Sammartino or “The Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers can enjoy this book as much as someone who follows John Cena or The Undertaker today. This collection is a never-ending source of facts, figures, and other entertaining data. Professional wrestling is a world of accomplishment, legacy, and, most importantly, fate. Through injuries, sickness, and family tribulations, many wrestlers have given everything they have to give in the ring, and true fans of the sport love every single second of it. No matter your age, if you’re a fan of professional wrestling, Legends of Pro Wrestling is the book for you to own and cherish. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil war in Sri Lanka and the part that nationalism seemed to play in it inspired the writing of this book some twenty-three years ago. The argument was developed through a comparative analysis of nationalism in Sri Lanka with the author’s native Australia. At the time this constituted an innovative approach to comparison in anthropology, as well as to nationalism and its possibilities. It was not based on differences but on the way in which perspectives from within the two nationalisms, when seen side-by-side, could present an understanding of their implication in producing the violence of war, racism, and social exclusion. The book has lost none of its importance and urgency as proven by the chapters in the Appendix, written by top scholars working in Sri Lanka and in Australia. These contributions bring together new material and critically explore the book’s themes and their continued relevance to the various trajectories in nationalist processes since the first publication of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Crockett in Texas: His Search for New Land, by Allen J. Wiener, takes a fresh look at the well-known figure from the perspective of his quest for land in Texas and the new start it promised for his family. This retelling of what the author terms “the last adventure in the life of a nineteenth-century Tennessee frontiersman who became a national celebrity” presents a picture of Crockett that contrasts with the popular image of the brash adventurer who sought glory on the battlefield as well as that of the bitter, failed politician who came to Texas as a last resort. Wiener presents a nuanced examination of Crockett’s motivations that places them in the context of the full arc of his career and aspirations, starting long before he ventured to the south side of the Red River. Notably, this book devotes a full chapter to the fate of Crockett’s family after his death, contributing perhaps the most complete account to date of the astute legal actions taken by Elizabeth Crockett to secure title to the land obtained by her late husband’s enlistment in the Texian cause. Uniquely to studies of Crockett, Wiener presents Elizabeth Crockett as a shrewd businesswoman who ably managed her husband’s various enterprises at home while he was off campaigning or serving in Washington, DC. David Crockett in Texas offers fascinating new evaluations of what we thought we already knew about one of the most studied and debated figures in Texas and American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newly reissued Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies, originally published in 2005, takes an in-depth look at the legends that have shaped the Phillies’ identity over the last seventy years. Each chapter profiles a different beloved Phillies personality that colored the latter half of the twentieth century. Most were cheered; some were booed. Philadelphia is a city that loves you back, just sometimes in strange ways. With quotes and interviews from former and current Phils, Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies profiles Mitch Williams, Darren Daulton, Dave Hollins, Jim Eisenreich, Pete Incaviglia, and Milt Thompson from 1993’s “Beards, Bellies, and Biceps” National League championship team, as well as Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, and Tug McGraw from the 1980 World Series championship team. Author Robert Gordon also includes their notable predecessors, from Hall of Famers Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn to former All-Stars like Johnny Callison and Del Ennis. No Phillies book would be complete without the off-the-field names who have defined the Phillies, such as team president Bill Giles, announcer Harry Kalas, and Dave Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic. Each of these legends played a unique role in shaping one of sports’ greatest franchises, and Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies brings them to life once again. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Book excerpt: William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was the most famous American of his age. He claimed to have worked for the Pony Express when only a boy and to have scouted for General George Custer. But what was his real story? And how did a frontiersman become a worldwide celebrity? In this prize-winning biography, acclaimed author Louis S. Warren explains not only how Cody exaggerated his real experience as an army scout and buffalo hunter, but also how that experience inspired him to create the gigantic, traveling spectacle known as Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. A dazzling mix of Indians, cowboys, and vaqueros, they performed on two continents for three decades, offering a surprisingly modern view of the United States and a remarkably democratic version of its history. This definitive biography reveals the genius of America’s greatest showman, and the startling history of the American West that drove him and his performers to the world stage.

Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind reference investigates the music and the musicians that set the popular trends of the last half century in America. Many rock fans have, at one time or another, ranked their favorite artists in order of talent, charisma, and musical influence on the world as they see it. In this same spirit, author and music historian David V. Moskowitz expands on the concept of "top ten" lists to provide a lineup of the best 100 musical groups from the past 60 years. Since the chosen bands are based on the author's personal taste, this two-volume set provokes discussion of which performers are included and why, offering insights into the surprising influences behind them. From the Everly Brothers, to the Ramones, to Public Enemy, the work covers a wide variety of styles and genres, clearly illustrating the connections between them. Entries focus on the group's history, touring, membership, major releases, selected discography, bibliography, and influence. Contributions from leading scholars in popular music shed light on derivative artists and underscore the overall impact of the performers on the music industry.
