Book excerpt: This is a reissue in book form of the first series of leaflets The Line to Legend Land. A modern title could very well be LEGENDS FROM POLDARK COUNTRY. Originally published by the G.W.R. in 1922, this small volume was an early form of Great Western’s modern day “Top 10 Things To Do” and gave the rail traveller a list of English, West Country legends to look up and places to see. This edition has twelve tales plus a poem and a song from the West Country of Devon & Cornwall – the area in which POLDARK is filmed. Each legend has an updated “How to Get There” section with train, bus and distance information. There are also two supplements, "The Furry Day Song" and the iconic “Trelawny”, also known as “The Song of the Western Men.” In older, simpler days, when reading was a rare accomplishment, our many times great-grandparents would gather round the blazing hearth or hall on the long, dark winter nights and pass away the hours before bedtime in conversation and story-telling. The old stories were told again and again and children learned them by heart in their earliest years and passed them on to their children and grandchildren in turn. In origin, most of these old legends date from the very dawn of our history, possibly even in a time before Stonehenge has been erected. They may have even been told around the camp-fires of that first British army that went out to face Cæsar’s invasion, now almost two millennia ago, and in the marshes of Southern England by the army of Alfred the Great before they finally defeated the Viking invaders. Later, much later, with the spread of education and the introduction of formal curricula, in which folklore seems to have no place, they began to die. Then, when many more folk could read and books grew cheap there was no longer the need to call upon memory for the old-fashioned romances, and so they began to fade from the modern consciousness. Yet there have always been those who loved the old tales best, and wrote them down before it was too late, so that they might be preserved forever. A few of them are retold briefly here with instructions of how to get to the very places in Devon & Cornwall that these legends originated from. Be sure to check out the Poldark filming locations map on the Abela webpage.

Book excerpt: Description The myths and legends of England’s South West are full of what is called "local colour" and are richer in legend than any other part. The legends in this volume are infused with Celtic poetry and symbolism, inherent in the blood of the people of the West They afford us not only glimpses of ancient times and of old habits of thought and life, but also of the country itself at different times of the year. Stories like THE LOST LAND OF LYONESSE which for part of the Arthurian legends, home to Tristan, which is said to have sunk beneath the waves. However, almost 100 years ago, the Great Western Railway realised the value of these stories to travellers and has saved 12 of these precious remnants of old England and put them into print for us. The stories in this volume are: The Church the Devil Stole The Parson and the Clerk The Weaver of Dean Combe The Demon Who Helped Drake The Samson of Tavistock The Midnight Hunter of the Moor The Lost Land of Lyonesse The Piskie's Funeral The Spectre Coach St. Neot, the Pigmy Saint The Old Man of Cury The Hooting Carn The Padstow May Day Songs (Supplement) Because so many old stories were passed on orally by storytellers, with the advent of the industrial revolution printed books became more common and these stories became “lost” as less attended the once popular storytelling sessions. Then in 1870 the UK Education Act undertook to teach all children how to read and the art of storytelling all but died out altogether. This volume is sure to keep you enchanted for hours, if only not because of the content, but because of their quality, and will have you and your young wards coming back for more time-and-again. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, wonder tales, West country, myth, legend, land, , Abbey, ancient, awe-inspiring, beasts, beautiful, black, Bodmin, Brent, Buckfast, Buckfastleigh, Buckland, Carn, cave, centuries, Church, clerk , Cornish, Cornwall, Dartmoor, Dawlish, Dean, demon who helped drake , Devil, Devon, discover, Dodge, Drake, Exeter, gates, glorious, golf, grave, Great, headless, heart, Hooting, hooting carn , hound, journey, King, Knowles, lamentation, Land's End, Lanreath, Lelant, Lizard, Looe, lost land of lyonesse , love, magnificent, mermaid, midnight hunter of the moor , miners, moor, moorland, Mullion, neighbour, Neot, night, old man of cury, Bodmin Moor, Ordulph, padstow may day songs , Parson, Penzance, picturesque, piskie's funeral , pixie, Plymouth, prehistoric, priest, Queen, railway, Richard, rock, saint, samson of tavistock , sand-hills, Scillies, Isles of Scilly, sea, Seven, spectre coach , spectre-pack, spirit, st. neot the pigmy saint , stole , Stones, stupendous, Talland, Tavistock, Tavy, thieves, thunder, Tor, transform, weaver of dean combe , weird, West, wild, Wish, world

Book excerpt: The most comprehensive account available of Michael Heizer's art by a writer and curator who has critical experience with the artist and his work. Michael Heizer is among the greatest, and often least accessible, American artists. As one of the last living figures who launched the Land Art movement, his legacy of works that are literally and metaphorically monumental has an incalculable influence on the world of sculpture and environmental art. But his seclusion in the remote Nevada desert, as well as his notorious obduracy, have resulted in significant gaps in our critical understanding. Michael Heizer: The Once and Future Monuments spans the breadth of Heizer's career, uniquely combining fieldwork, personal narrative, and biographical research to create the first major assessment in years of this titan of American art. Author William L. Fox, founding director of the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, has alternately been a sponsor, advocate, and critic of Heizer's work for decades. Fox's understanding of the artist's history and connection to landscape, his time spent with Heizer at the remote ranch where Heizer is finishing his magnum opus--the mile-long sculpture City--and his access to some of Heizer's key associates give him a unique position from which to discuss the artist's work. Fox has also made numerous site visits to Heizer's work--including early pieces in the Nevada desert now largely lost to the elements--to correct the often inconsistent accounts of their locations. Last, Fox imparts a crucial new understanding of Heizer's work by elaborating on the artist's bond with his father, the famed archaeologist and cultural ecologist Robert Heizer, who enlisted his son on important digs in Mexico and Peru, providing the young man with an appreciation of site, landscape, and geology that would thoroughly inform his work. Michael Heizer: The Once and Future Monuments is a long overdue addition to the critical and biographical literature of this major figure in American art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cosmos stands on the precipice of something great, something grand; something terrible. In a secluded forest, a man garbed in black knows this, and does nothing; he does not care. Many find themselves there, in that place where legends go to die; they, like he, are alone. He, unlike they, has had everything ripped from him. In a dark and warm place, there is a woman with hair red as blood, who does nothing; she has no idea how to. She is like everyone else: unknown, in danger, and hopeless; merely another forgotten legend who doesn't even remember herself. This is the story of Mister E, of his triumphs and tribulations. This is the story of Scarlett, of her pain and her joy. This is a tale of dead legends, and of how they are not content to remain forgotten, on the edge of the existence. A great unraveling of the cosmos is about to begin, and these ghosts of myths and fables are about to be swept up in a scheme too large to fathom, but they will not submit peacefully. In "Legend Land," things are not black and white; there are no heroes and villains. It is a murky, grey mess where the lines between "good" and "evil" are thin and barely exist. Follow the story of several long forgotten legends as they rediscover what it means to be human, to feel, in a world where having a conscience or dropping your guard can earn you permanent erasure from the fabric of reality. Follow these characters as they decide when to become the hero, or embrace being a villain; as they decide where to draw the line, and when to obliterate it completely.

The broad themes of the paintings and many of the symbolic elements they contain serve to introduce some of the people and events that contributed to the state's vivid history. Contained within each chapter are brief comments and photographs that give a glimpse into the evolving role of Florida's lawmaking institutions."--Page [7].

The author’s findings, and his creative and synthetic methodologies, enhance greatly our understanding of the world of the legend, and especially the basic question of ‘Who tells what to whom in the form of a legend and why?’ This work is an in-depth exploration of rural Denmark, and provides us with an excellent vantage point from which to understand legends in their cultural contexts and within the lives of their tellers.

Book excerpt: Legends of the Promised Land is the passionate memoir recounting the forced immigration of a Vietnamese family to the U.S., following the Vietnam war and the rise of communism in their homeland. In her own words, traditional aphorism, and the voices of her children and husband, the matriarch of the family describes her family’s inspirational realization of the American dream, beginning with her lone arrival in the U.S. as a penniless boat person. Xuan-Lan Nguyen tells how for six generations her hard-working family amassed wealth that was all lost when the Vietnamese Communists arrived in Saigon in 1975. Her husband, a well-known lawyer in Vietnam and a seventeen-year prisoner of the Vietnamese Communists, eventually joined her, becoming a writer and orator now living with his family in America. She says proudly, “We have three daughters, now three doctors in the medical field in the U.S.”
