Book Synopsis Law and Regulation of Mobile Payment Systems by : Joy Malala
Download or read book Law and Regulation of Mobile Payment Systems written by Joy Malala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last ten years mobile payment systems have revolutionised banking in some countries in Africa. In Kenya the introduction of M-Pesa, a new financial services model, has transformed the banking and financial services industry. Giving the unbanked majority access to the financial services market it has attracted over 18 million subscribers which is remarkable given that fewer than 4 million people in Kenya have bank accounts. This book addresses the legal and regulatory issues arising out of the introduction of M-Pesa in Kenya and its drive towards financial inclusion. It considers the interaction between regulation and technological innovation with a particular focus on the regulatory tools, institutional arrangements and government decisional processes through the examination as a whole of its regulatory capacity. This is done with a view to understanding the regulatory capacity of Kenya in addressing the vulnerabilities presented by technological innovation in the financial industry for consumers after financial inclusion. It also examines the way that mobile payments have been regulated by criticising the piecemeal approach that the Central Bank of Kenya has taken in addressing the legal and regulatory issues presented by mobile payments. The book argues there are significant gaps in the regulatory regime of mobile banking in Kenya.
Book Synopsis Structural Issues in the Kenyan Financial System by : Thorsten Beck
Download or read book Structural Issues in the Kenyan Financial System written by Thorsten Beck and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although by regional standards Kenya's financial system is relatively well developed and diversified, major structural impediments prevent it from reaching its full potential. Cross-country comparisons, however, show the importance of a well developed financial sector for long-term economic growth and poverty alleviation. Experience from other developing economies has shown the detrimental effect of government ownership and the positive impact that foreign bank ownership can have on the development of a market-based financial system. Analyzing and decomposing the high interest rate spreads and margins in Kenya helps identify structural impediments that drive the high cost of and low access to financial services. The limited information sharing on debtors, deficiencies in the legal and judicial system, the limited number of strong and reputable banks, and nontransparency and uncertainty in the banking market are major impediments to the development of Kenya's financial system, and to reducing spreads and widening access. This paper - a product of the Finance Team, Development Research Group - is part of a larger effort in the group to understand the determinants of financial sector development.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper on Kenya reviews Kenya’s external stability in a context where the exchange rate has strengthened and capital inflows are playing an increasingly important role. Kenya’s external current account deficit has widened, reflecting strong import volumes as well as rising import prices, particularly for oil, but external debt as a percent of GDP has declined steadily. Underlying these developments have been a steady increase in capital inflows and a remarkable rebound of economic growth since 2003 after two decades of stagnation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper reviews the evidence on the importance of finance for economic well-being, provides data on the degree of use of basic financial services by households and firms across a sample of countries, assesses the desirability of more universal access, and overviews the macroeconomic, legal, and regulatory obstacles to access using general evidence and case studies. Although access to finance can be very beneficial, the data show that universal use is far from prevalent in many countries, especially developing countries. At the same time, universal access has generally not been a public policy objective and is surely not easily achievable in most countries.
