Book excerpt: Chelsea Hamilton spent her life preparing to run the international clothing business her parents started, but she's still caught off guard when she learns of her mother's untimely death. Chelsea returns to New Hampshire, buries her mother, and prepares to take over the floundering business. When a stranger attempts to kill her, she realizes somebody doesn't want her to inherit her legacy. Private Investigator Dylan O'Donnell spends his time searching for lost teens. He doesn't know what to think of the beautiful woman seeking his services. Hers isn't the kind of case he's accustomed to handling, and she isn't the kind of client he quit his steady job to help, but something about the woman pulls at him. She's in danger, and he can't turn her away. But if he blows this very public case, his floundering business might not survive. Together, they dig into her family's secrets. The closer they get to the truth, the closer they grow to one another. Can Chelsea save the legacy her parents fought to leave her? Can Dylan save Chelsea from the enemies determined to see her dead?

Book excerpt: A Black descendant of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings’ family explores America’s racial reckoning through the prism of her ancestors—both the enslaver and the enslaved. Gayle Jessup White had long heard the stories passed down from her father’s family, that they were direct descendants of Thomas Jefferson—lore she firmly believed, though others did not. For four decades the acclaimed journalist and genealogy enthusiast researched her connection to Thomas Jefferson, to confirm its truth once and for all. After she was named a Jefferson Studies Fellow, Jessup White discovered her family lore was correct. Poring through photos and documents and pursuing DNA evidence, she learned that not only was she a descendant of Jefferson on his father’s side; she was also the great-great-great-granddaughter of Peter Hemings, Sally Hemings’s brother. In Reclamation she chronicles her remarkable journey to definitively understand her heritage and reclaim it, and offers a compelling portrait of what it means to be a black woman in America, to pursue the American dream, to reconcile the legacy of racism, and to ensure the nation lives up to the ideals advocated by her legendary ancestor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author, Moin Qazi, delineates the trajectory of Islamic feminism, which scholars are now actively researching because of the transformative advances made by Muslim women. These women have escaped the subjugation and oppression they endured for centuries. The continuing grim portrayals of these women hit the author's nerve. He believed it was imperative to highlight modern Muslim women's true breadth of experience. The Islamic feminist landscape is already undergoing a profound transformation. Historically, Islam was incredibly advanced in providing revolutionary rights for women and uplifting their status. Scholarship on Islamic women has expanded exponentially over the past few decades, and there has been cross-pollination between other fields and disciplines. Islamic doctrine has enabled women to participate in battlefields, independently carry on trade and business, and, when circumstances demand it. The most outstanding achievement of early Islam concerning women was its strict prohibition of female infanticide. A preference for male babies was evidence of deep-seated bias against girls. Many of the revelations in the Qur'an were by nature reform-oriented, transforming critical aspects of pre-Islamic customary laws and practices in progressive ways and eliminating injustice for women. The book is a prism from which to view the Muslim feminist revolution. The author analyses how the patriarchal-oriented rulers and clerics have obliquely tried to roll back these reforms. But of late, women have finally been able to morph from their pathetic condition and redefine the contours of their gender space.

Book excerpt: The following pages speak of areas that must be changed in order for the African American community to reclaim our legacy, to grow, and to become all we have been designed to be. These topics are some of the toughest we have to deal with, yet they are topics we know we must confront. Truth be told, we can no longer sit and wait for the man to recognize his/her issues and change. Lets be realistic. They have no motivation to change; their lives are comfortable. Would you change your life if it were comfortable? You would not. The motivation for the majority to change society for the minority does not exist. The only way to move ahead and prosper is to put forth energy, to be accountable for our own success, to stop coming up with excuses, and to come up with executable action steps. Take control of your own life, be accountable for your decisions, and be responsible for your family.

Raimondo shows how the noninterventionist Old Right - which included half-forgotten giants and prophets such as Senator Robert A. Taft, Garet Garrett, and Colonel Robert McCormick - was supplanted in influence by a Right that made its peace with bigger government at home and "perpetual war for perpetual peace" abroad. First published in 1993, Reclaiming the American Right is as timely as ever. This new edition includes commentary by Pat Buchanan, political scientist George W. Carey, Chronicles executive editor Scott Richert, and the Ludwig von Mises Institute's David Gordon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divorce is at once a widespread reality and a painful decision, so it is no surprise that this landmark study of its long-term effects should both spark debate and find a large audience. In this compelling, thought-provoking book, Judith Wallerstein explains that, while children do learn to cope with divorce, it in fact takes its greatest toll in adulthood, when the sons and daughters of divorced parents embark on romantic relationships of their own. Wallerstein sensitively illustrates how children of divorce often feel that their relationships are doomed, seek to avoid conflict, and fear commitment. Failure in their loving relationships often seems to them preordained, even when things are going smoothly. As Wallerstein checks in on the adults she first encountered as youngsters more than twenty-five years ago, she finds that their experiences mesh with those of the millions of other children of divorce, who will find themselves on every page. With more than 100,000 copies in print, The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce spent three weeks on the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Denver Post bestseller lists. The book was also featured on two episodes of Oprah as well as on the front cover of Time and the New York Times Book Review.
