Book Synopsis Chaucer's "legal Fiction" by : Mary Flowers Braswell
Download or read book Chaucer's "legal Fiction" written by Mary Flowers Braswell and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, Chaucer has been associated with law. This study, however, is concerned less with the overt in Chaucer that concerns law than with the concealed and private: a specific body of materials -- records from the medieval English law courts that the poet evidently read, studied, discussed with colleagues, and then threaded into his texts. This book examines the effects of those documents on the so-called "minor" poems, The House of Fame, and The Canterbury Tales.

Book Synopsis Writing on Skin in the Age of Chaucer by : Nicole Nyffenegger
Download or read book Writing on Skin in the Age of Chaucer written by Nicole Nyffenegger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to its relatedness to parchment as the primary writing matter of the Middle Ages, human skin was not only a topic to write about in medieval texts, it was also conceived of as an inscribable surface, both in the material and in the figurative sense. This volume explores the textuality of human skin as discussed by Geoffrey Chaucer and other writers (medical, religious, philosophical, and literary) of the fourteenth and fifteenth century. It presents four main aspects of the complex relations between text, parchment, and human skin as they have been discussed in recent scholarship. These four aspects are, first, the (mostly figurative) resonances between parchment-making and transformations of human skin, second, parchment as a space of contact between animal and human spheres, third, human skin and parchment as sites where (gender) identities are negotiated, and fourth, the place of medieval skin studies within cultural studies and its relationship to the major concerns of cultural studies: the difficult demarcation of skin from body, the instability of any inscription, and the skin’s precarious state as an entity of its own.

Download or read book Ramsey written by Anne Reiber DeWindt and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The people of Ramsey included clerics, knights, and laborers, and their activities overlapped to the point that the infamous tripartite division of medieval society - into those who prayed, fought, and worked - becomes meaningless. The book also crosses chronological boundaries, moving through decades of rebellion, plague, demographic turnover, violence, bloodshed, and war, and ending with religious upheaval that spelled the death of the 600-year-old abbey and the intrusion of an ambitious new lay landlord with courtly connections."--BOOK JACKET.
