Download or read book Lee's Centennial: An Address (Classic Reprint) written by Charles Francis Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lee's Centennial: An Address Having occasion once to refer in discussion to certain of the founders of our Massachusetts Commonwealth, I made the assertion that their force lay in character; and I added that in saying this I paid, and meant to pay, the highest tribute which in my judgment could be paid to a community or to its typical men. Quite a number of years have passed since I so expressed myself, and in those years I have grown older - materially older; but I now repeat even more confidently than I then uttered them, these other words The older I have grown and the more I have studied and seen, the greater in my esteem, as an element of strength in a people, has Character become, and the less in the con duct of human affairs have I thought of mere capacity or even genius. With Character a race will become great, even though as stupid and unassimilating as the Romans; without Character, any race will in the long run prove a failure, though it may number in it individ uals having all the brilliancy of the Jews, crowned with the genius of Napoleon. Book Synopsis Inside the Confederate Nation by : Lesley J. Gordon
Download or read book Inside the Confederate Nation written by Lesley J. Gordon and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Confederacy as a Revolutionary Experience (1970) and The Confederate Nation (1979), Emory Thomas redefined the field of Civil War history and reconceptualized the Confederacy as a unique entity fighting a war for survival. Inside the Confederate Nation honors his enormous contributions to the field with fresh interpretations of all aspects of Confederate life -- nationalism and identity, family and gender, battlefront and home front, race, and postwar legacies and memories. Many of the volume's twenty essays focus on individuals, households, communities, and particular regions of the South, highlighting the sheer variety of circumstances southerners faced over the course of the war. Other chapters explore the public and private dilemmas faced by diplomats, policy makers, journalists, and soldiers within the new nation. All of the essays attempt to explain the place of southerners within the Confederacy, how they came to see themselves and others differently because of secession, and the disparities between their expectations and reality.
Book Synopsis The Romance of Reunion by : Nina Silber
Download or read book The Romance of Reunion written by Nina Silber and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconciliation of North and South following the Civil War depended as much on cultural imagination as on the politics of Reconstruction. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Nina Silber documents the transformation from hostile sectionalism to sentimental reunion rhetoric. Northern culture created a notion of reconciliation that romanticized and feminized southern society. In tourist accounts, novels, minstrel shows, and popular magazines, northerners contributed to a mythic and nostalgic picture of the South that served to counter their anxieties regarding the breakdown of class and gender roles in Gilded Age America. Indeed, for many Yankees, the ultimate symbol of the reunion process, and one that served to reinforce Victorian values as well as northern hegemony, was the marriage of a northern man and a southern woman. Southern men also were represented as affirming traditional gender roles. As northern men wrestled with their nation's increasingly global and aggressive foreign policy, the military virtues extolled in Confederate legend became more admired than reviled. By the 1890s, concludes Silber, northern whites had accepted not only a newly resplendent image of Dixie but also a sentimentalized view of postwar reunion.
