Book excerpt: In today’s pluralistic world, many cultures feel a shift in the relationship of people with religious traditions. A corresponding movement is a resurgence of interest in human spirituality. This Handbook presents the views of education scholars who engage these concepts every day, in a collection of essays reflecting the international state of the discipline. Out of these rises a vision for the emergence of a just and peaceful world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraiture and Politics in Revolutionary France challenges widely held assumptions about both the genre of portraiture and the political and cultural role of images in France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. After 1789, portraiture came to dominate French visual culture because it addressed the central challenge of the Revolution: how to turn subjects into citizens. Revolutionary portraits allowed sitters and artists to appropriate the means of representation, both aesthetic and political, and articulate new forms of selfhood and citizenship, often in astonishingly creative ways. The triumph of revolutionary portraiture also marks a turning point in the history of art, when seriousness of purpose and aesthetic ambition passed from the formulation of historical narratives to the depiction of contemporary individuals. This shift had major consequences for the course of modern art production and its engagement with the political and the contingent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating Information and Communication Technology tools into the teaching and learning of history has become a common practice worldwide. It is no longer a question of if, but of how to introduce it in the classroom in order to make history education more effective and enjoyable. This book gathers the experiences and reflections of researchers from three continents, based on their own activities and on empirical studies. The contributions concentrate on videogames related to the past, history e-textbooks, and applications for mobile devices with historical content. Some texts deal explicitly with global phenomena, such as the “Assassin’s Creed” or “Colonization” games, some present materials developed for the international market, such as a European e-textbook or mobile phone applications, while others concentrate on local experiences, such as a Chinese e-schoolbag, a Swiss tablet application, Polish and Estonian e-textbooks, or English teacher training. The book is a result, and a reinforcement, of the belief that history educators can benefit from the lessons learnt in other places of the globalising world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place of history in school curricula has sparked heated debate in Canada. Is Canadian history dead? Who killed it? Should history be put in the service of nation? Can any history be truly inclusive? New Possibilities for the Past advances the debate by shifting the focus from what should be included in a nation’s history to how we should think about and teach the past. Museum educators, secondary school teachers, historians, and history educators document the state of history education research. They go on to consider the implications of the research for classrooms from kindergarten to graduate school and in other contexts such as museums, virtual environments, and public institutional settings. This book takes into consideration the perspectives of indigenous peoples, the citizens of Quebec, and advocates of citizenship education. This volume sets a comprehensive research agenda for educators, policy-makers, and historians to help students learn about and, more importantly, understand the significance of the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers teacher training in social studies and finds it lacking a sense of genuine critical empathy, a sense of shared humanity. Current teacher education generally defines critical thinking as processes which examine topics in greater complexity, but does not prepare candidates to study, confront, and challenge existing social structures. Often in response to state mandates, teacher education programs rate and interpret candidate quality based on their conformance with standards and defined outcomes. There is a lack of tolerance for alternative views that may substantially challenge the often-oppressive hierarchical system of authority in our world. This volume which includes contributions from social studies educators in the U.S., Canada, and Australia offers the thinking and practice of teacher education scholars who embrace the idea and practices of empathy in the social studies classroom. Defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another”, direct emphasis on empathy represents a vehicle for developing a sense of mutual understanding and questioning of economic and social systems. Developing teacher candidates who comprehend and experience the feelings of diverse education stakeholders provides opportunities for harmonious teaching and learning environments situated in the lives of learners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France and Women, 1789-1914 is the first book to offer an authoritative account of women's history throughout the nineteenth century. James McMillan, author of the seminal work Housewife or Harlot, offers a major reinterpretation of the French past in relation to gender throughout these tumultuous decades of revolution and war. This book provides a challenging discussion of the factors which made French political culture so profoundly sexist and in particular, it shows that many of the myths about progress and emancipation associated with modernisation and the coming of mass politics do not stand up to close scrutiny. It also reveals the conservative nature of the republican left and of the ingrained belief throughout french society that women should remain within the domestic sphere. James McMillan considers the role played by French men and women in the politics, culture and society of their country throughout the 1800s.
