Book Synopsis Lectures on Preaching by : Phillips Brooks

Book excerpt: Phillips Brooks, a veteran minister with years of experience at the pulpit, shares guidance on preaching and serving in the ministry in these lectures delivered at Yale University. The nineteenth century was a time of great expansion in the United States, and by extension the churches and Christian movements. Demand for new preachers and ministers burgeoned, that the many new communities founded had God in the hearts and minds of their inhabitants. Having lived in what was an environment of upheaval, Brooks felt it appropriate to pass on the wisdom and advice to prospective new ministers looking to found or join parishes around the country. Making and delivering fine sermons, the messages of which stay with the congregation, is at the heart of what a good minister does. Yet the work is not confined to merely this; the preacher must be a support to the communal and spiritual life of his locality, that his congregation be kept in good health, and that their souls be shepherded toward a life of virtue and good conduct. The preacher must also turn his attention inward: his character must be examined for flaws or bad habits, with virtues cultivated, that he stand as a model for the wider community.

With many priceless tips on the development, relevance and structuring of a message, this book will be an invaluable addition to the bookshelf of any preacher. Everything about sermon construction is examined with perception and insight: the beginning the conclusion, and how to prepare for preaching. No one can preach without preparing their own inner life. Sangter preached his most moving sermon as he lay dying slowly fir a few years from an incurable disease. In that experience he touched more preachers by “the amassing of great soul so as o have something worthwhile to give.” Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing many of these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book Synopsis The Four Pages of the Sermon, Revised and Updated by : Paul Scott Wilson
Download or read book The Four Pages of the Sermon, Revised and Updated written by Paul Scott Wilson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing justice to the complexity of the preaching task and the questions that underlie it, author Paul Scott Wilson organizes both the preparation and the content of the sermon around its "four pages." Each "page" addresses a different theological and creative component of what happens in any sermon. Page One presents the trouble or conflict that takes place in or that underscores the biblical text itself. Page Two looks at similar conflict--sin or brokenness--in our own time. Page Three returns to the Bible to identify where God is at work in or behind the text--in other words, to discover the good news. Page Four points to God at work in our world, particularly in relation to the situations described in Page Two. This approach is about preaching the gospel in nearly any sermonic form. Wilson teaches the ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’ of sermon construction, all rooted in a theology of the Word. This completely revised edition guides readers through the sermon process step by step, with the aim of composing sermons that challenge and provide hope, by focusing on God more closely than on humans. It has been largely rewritten to include an assessment of where preaching is today in light of propositional preaching, the New Homiletic, African American preaching, the effect of the internet, and use of technology. A chapter on exegesis has been added, plus new focus on the importance of preaching to a felt need, the need for proclamation in addition to teaching, and developing tools to ensure sermon excellence. New sermon examples have been added along with a section that responds to critics and looks to the future.
