Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Literature of the Age of Elizabeth: And Characters of Shakespear's Plays The former editions of the Lectures, originally delivered by the author at the Surrey Institution in 1818, and published in the same year, having become exhausted, the present reprint has been undertaken, for the purpose of supplying the constant and increasing demand which is made for it. There is no feature in the retrospect of the last few years, more important and more delightful than the steady advance of an improved taste in literature: and both as a cause and as a consequence of this, the works of William Hazlitt, which heretofore have been duly appreciated only by the few, are now having ample justice done them by the many. With reference to the present work, the Edinburgh Review eloquently observes, "Mr. Hazlitt possesses one noble quality at least for the office which he has chosen, in the intense admiration and love which he feels for the great authors on whose excellencies he chiefly dwells. His relish for their beauties is so keen, that while he describes them, the pleasures which they impart become almost palpable to the sense, and we seem, scarcely in a figure, to feast and banquet on their 'nectared sweets.' He introduces us almost corporally into the divine presence of the great of old time - enables us to hear the living oracles of wisdom drop from their lips - and makes us partakers, not only of those joys which they diffused, but of those which they felt in the inmost recesses of their souls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Dramatic Literature O exemplify those features in the acting dramatic poem, which contribute mainly to its success, we shall have recourse to Shakespeare; from among those incomparable records which he has left us of his genius, we shall select the tragedy of "Macbeth," as one of the most felicitous in plot and execution. Of this play we shall examine the first act. In the tragedy of "Macbeth," the historical and the romantic are blended with singular effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characters of Shakespear's Plays: Lectures on the English Poets IT is observed by Mr. Pope, that If ever any author deserved the name of an original, it was Shakespear. Homer himself drew not his art so immediately from the fountains Of nature; it proceeded through nyptian i strainers and channels, and came to him not without some tincture of the learning, or some cast Of the models, of those before him. The poetry of Shakespear was Inspiration if indeed, he is not SO much an imitator, as an instrument of nature; and it is not so just to say that he speaks from her as that she speaks through him. Elizabethan drama centres in Shakespeare, not merely for the general reader, but also for the professional student. Shake speare seems to have tried nearly every form or plan suggested by his predecessors and given it in many cases its supreme expression. Moreover, to an extent which was at one time greatly under-estimated, his successors recognized his pre - eminence and started from his achievement. Book excerpt: Characters of Shakespeare's Plays by William Hazlitt The essays of William Hazlitt offer us a characteristic example of English Romantic style. Coleridge, De Quincey, and Lamb are equally excellent, but the power of their personae (the fragmentary genius, the languid eccentric, the sentimental bachelor) tend to overshadow our appreciation of the prose. But Hazlitt is not so calculating in his creation of a self; he merely speaks for his enthusiasms in literature and art in some of best prose of the period.
