Treacherous beyond all other diseases, eases apparently the least violent, scarcely de serving the name of disease in the earlier stages, not unfre quently develop lesions of the most formidable kind in their pro gress, and result in a fatal termination; while in others, a train of painful and disgusting sequela gradually exhaust the strength With long continued sufl'ering, and entail consequences which remain for years, or even during life. It must be evident that such a disease demands the most careful investigation into its character, cause, and treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Lectures Introductory to the Study of FeverThese then are the causes of fever. Now let us ask, What is fever Here you observe we are altogether casting aside any nominal fever. We are not speaking of scarlet fever, of typhus fever, and so on; we are taking fever in the general. I daresay you are all aware that fever has been attributed by different authors to local affections; by some to affec tion of the head; by some - the Broussaists I mean to an affection of the intestines. Certainly local diseases may produce a febrile state. We have seen that inflammation gives rise to fever; but this is not the fever of which we are now speaking. We speak now of idiopathic, or as some call it, essential fever; and there is no doubt whatever that idio pathic fever has a real existence, - that there is essential fever, - that there is fever which may kill a man without any local lesion whatever. There is not the least doubt of that. I have inspected the bodies of patients dying of typhus, and found no lesion whatever to which we could attribute the symptoms under which they laboured. Of course fever may become complicated; and in fatal cases it is probably for the most part complicated - with; affections of the lungs, of the bowels, of the throat.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Successful Treatment of Scarlet Fever: Also Observations on the Pathology Treatment of Growing Inspiration in Infants If custom did not demand a Preface to a Book, however small, I could have been well content that the present Volume should have made its appearance without one; for in the Two Dissertations of which it consists, I have simply stated matters of fact and experience, which require no preliminary key to enable the reader to understand them. I may here, however, anticipate an objection which may possibly be made to the title of the first, The Successful Treatment of Scarlet Fever: it may be said that this is too confident. To such an objection, my answer is, that this title only expresses what I have experienced to be true; and the still longer experience of a friend - whose treatment of the Disease is similar to my own, and based on the same principles - confirms what I have stated, and further justifies the propriety of the title. These facts, indeed, afford conclusive arguments for enforcing on you the importance of closely watching every attack of illness that may invade the body while it is so frail; but they alone would scarcely be adequate reasons for my bringing these diseases under your notice as objects for special study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Milroy Lectures: On Epidemic Disease in England the Evidence of Variability and of Persistency of Type The Registration Act of 1837, as has often been observed, marks a new departure. Dr. Farr commented upon the notable advance made when statistical records were first applied to the study of epidemic disease. The Registrar General calculates rates to two places of decimals, but there is still no precise agreement as to the nature of the units dealt with. Is typhus, for example, the disease of 1847, or that which smouldered in Bermondsey in 1903? Scarlet fever is said to prevail nowadays in an attenuated form.
