Carefully documented, eminently fair, and gracefully written, it raises and answers key questions about Graham's character, contributions, and influence on the world religious scene. In this engaging and comprehensive book, William Martin gives readers a better understanding of the most successful evangelist in modern history, and the movement he led for over fifty years. A Prophet with Honor makes a vital contribution to the Billy Graham legacy and allows us to understand why his words, actions, and personality endeared him to popes and preachers, kings and presidents, and millions of Christians in virtually every nation and culture around the world. Martin draws on extensive conversations with Graham himself nearly two hundred interviews previously untouched resources, including documents from six presidential libraries and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association archives personal observation of Graham's crusades and conferences in the United States and Europe decades of research on evangelical Christianity Martin pays particular attention to Graham's controversial relationships with Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. He also describes how Graham's lifelong determination "to do something great for God" led him to organize international conferences that spearheaded the worldwide spread of the liberating message of Jesus, and prompted him to help strengthen religious freedom in the Soviet bloc and China. Tracing Graham's life and ministry from his rural and religious roots in North Carolina to his place as the elder statesman of American evangelicalism, examining both his triumphs and his tribulations, Martin shows the multidimensional character of the man who has become one of the most admired persons in the world.

Book excerpt: “When we believe the Bible as it is, we will see the power of God move in our lives and in our community as it did centuries ago in Bible times.” -Mel Tari Translated into dozens of languages, with millions of copies sold, Like a Mighty Wind remains a beloved classic from global evangelist Mel Tari. Recounting the incredible story of revival on the island of Timor during 1965 in the midst of political turmoil, the book is an amazing testament to the power of faith and the reality of God's power to work miracles in modern times. The Spirit of God that swept across the island “like a mighty wind” continues today throughout Indonesia although persecution of Christians is all too common. The story of God's powerful revival in this region remains a testament to the truth of God's Word, and serves as a reminder to all believers that the Spirit of God manifests in our world now as it did in the earliest days of the Church.

Through a series of revivals which began at Baptist churches in Brownwood and Santa Anna, Texas, God moved across the face of American campuses. From Texas to Minnesota, from Massachusetts to Oregon, lives were touched and schools and churches were turned upside down. While focusing on Wheaton College, this book chronicles the events as they affected many schools and students. You will find here the characteristics of revivals and a history of campus awakenings. You will read firsthand accounts of how the Wheaton revival affected students and how it spread to other campuses and churches. This touching report gives readers a glimpse of what happens when God's spirit moves in a dramatic way among His people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses Ezra Pound's The Cantos as a lens to understand modernism's ambition to revolutionize literature through mythical and scientific methods. Homer's Odyssey plays a unique methodological and structural role in The Cantos. The Cantos translates, interprets, abridges, adapts, critiques, parodies, trivializes, allegorizes, and “ritualizes” the Odyssey. Partly inspired by Joyce's use of different literary styles or “technics” in Ulysses, and partly inspired by medieval classicism and 19th century philology, Pound uses a plethora of methods to translate Homer and other classical texts. This book argues that The Cantos is a modernist vision of the Matter of Troy, a term used by medieval authors to designate the cycle of texts based on the Trojan war and its aftereffects, including the nostoi (returns) of the Greek heroes. This is the first study to explore how medieval classicism and translation informs Pound's mythical method and to systematically outline the variety and evolution of Pound's Odyssey translations in The Cantos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church's development and use of sacraments has evolved in many ways from the days of the early church to the present. This sourcebook provides key theological texts that played a role in those movements. Johnson traces the history and theology of individual sacraments along with their liturgical context in the church's worship. He includes materials previously developed in James F. White's classic collection, Documents of Christian Worship: Descriptive and Interpretive Sources (Westminster John Knox Press, 1992), and supplements these to provide a wide range of indispensible materials. He also contributes helpful background notes to give the reader the full breadth and depth of the church's thought on these important topics. This book will be of great value to those studying the history of Christian worship and the development of the sacraments.

This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There was a time when revival preaching was very common. People were hungry for a fresh work of God and they actually anticipated God's supernatural transformation in their lives, churches and communities. I am grateful to Ernie Klassen and his work on Revival Preaching. Using the backdrop of Jonathan Edwards's powerful preaching ministry, we are invited into a rich theological journey flavored with real life experiences. (David Hearn, President of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada). One of the great, though greatly overlooked, tools that Christian pastors have for bringing renewal and revival, is the past. One such figure in Christian tradition is Jonathan Edwards, the eighteenth-century North American theologian, preacher, revivalist, and missionary. Looking at the intersection of revival, preaching, and Edwards, Ernie Klassen provides "lessons" that religious leaders can take from Edwards' experiences and writings. (Dr. Kenneth P. Minkema, Jonathan Edwards Center, Yale University).

This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Atlanta enacted prohibition in 1885, it was the largest city in the United States to do so. A Most Stirring and Significant Episode examines the rise of temperance sentiment among freed African Americans that made this vote possible—as well as the forces that resulted in its 1887 reversal well before the 18th Amendment to the Constitution created a national prohibition in 1919. H. Paul Thompson Jr.'s research also sheds light on the profoundly religious nature of African American involvement in the temperance movement. Contrary to the prevalent depiction of that movement as being one predominantly led by white, female activists like Carrie Nation, Thompson reveals here that African Americans were central to the rise of prohibition in the south during the 1880s. As such, A Most Stirring and Significant Episode offers a new take on the proliferation of prohibition and will not only speak to scholars of prohibition in the US and beyond, but also to historians of religion and the African American experience.
