Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An especially timely work, the book is an introduction to the theory of p-adic L-functions originated by Kubota and Leopoldt in 1964 as p-adic analogues of the classical L-functions of Dirichlet. Professor Iwasawa reviews the classical results on Dirichlet's L-functions and sketches a proof for some of them. Next he defines generalized Bernoulli numbers and discusses some of their fundamental properties. Continuing, he defines p-adic L-functions, proves their existence and uniqueness, and treats p-adic logarithms and p-adic regulators. He proves a formula of Leopoldt for the values of p-adic L-functions at s=1. The formula was announced in 1964, but a proof has never before been published. Finally, he discusses some applications, especially the strong relationship with cyclotomic fields.

Book excerpt: The present work treats p-adic properties of solutions of the hypergeometric differential equation d2 d ~ ( x(l - x) dx + (c(l - x) + (c - 1 - a - b)x) dx - ab)y = 0, 2 with a, b, c in 4) n Zp, by constructing the associated Frobenius structure. For this construction we draw upon the methods of Alan Adolphson [1] in his 1976 work on Hecke polynomials. We are also indebted to him for the account (appearing as an appendix) of the relation between this differential equation and certain L-functions. We are indebted to G. Washnitzer for the method used in the construction of our dual theory (Chapter 2). These notes represent an expanded form of lectures given at the U. L. P. in Strasbourg during the fall term of 1980. We take this opportunity to thank Professor R. Girard and IRMA for their hospitality. Our subject-p-adic analysis-was founded by Marc Krasner. We take pleasure in dedicating this work to him. Book excerpt: Traditionally, p-adic L-functions have been constructed from complex L-functions via special values and Iwasawa theory. In this volume, Perrin-Riou presents a theory of p-adic L-functions coming directly from p-adic Galois representations (or, more generally, from motives). This theory encompasses, in particular, a construction of the module of p-adic L-functions via the arithmetic theory and a conjectural definition of the p-adic L-function via its special values. Since the original publication of this book in French (see Astérisque 229, 1995), the field has undergone significant progress. These advances are noted in this English edition. Also, some minor improvements have been made to the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berkeley Lectures on p-adic Geometry presents an important breakthrough in arithmetic geometry. In 2014, leading mathematician Peter Scholze delivered a series of lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, on new ideas in the theory of p-adic geometry. Building on his discovery of perfectoid spaces, Scholze introduced the concept of “diamonds,” which are to perfectoid spaces what algebraic spaces are to schemes. The introduction of diamonds, along with the development of a mixed-characteristic shtuka, set the stage for a critical advance in the discipline. In this book, Peter Scholze and Jared Weinstein show that the moduli space of mixed-characteristic shtukas is a diamond, raising the possibility of using the cohomology of such spaces to attack the Langlands conjectures for a reductive group over a p-adic field. This book follows the informal style of the original Berkeley lectures, with one chapter per lecture. It explores p-adic and perfectoid spaces before laying out the newer theory of shtukas and their moduli spaces. Points of contact with other threads of the subject, including p-divisible groups, p-adic Hodge theory, and Rapoport-Zink spaces, are thoroughly explained. Berkeley Lectures on p-adic Geometry will be a useful resource for students and scholars working in arithmetic geometry and number theory.

The p-adic numbers are less well known than the others, but they play a fundamental role in number theory and in other parts of mathematics. This elementary introduction offers a broad understanding of p-adic numbers. From the reviews: "It is perhaps the most suitable text for beginners, and I shall definitely recommend it to anyone who asks me what a p-adic number is." --THE MATHEMATICAL GAZETTE

Book excerpt: In [Hardy and Williams, 1986] the authors exploited a very simple idea to obtain a linear congruence involving class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields modulo a certain power of 2. Their congruence provided a unified setting for many congruences proved previously by other authors using various means. The Hardy-Williams idea was as follows. Let d be the discriminant of a quadratic field. Suppose that d is odd and let d = PIP2· . . Pn be its unique decomposition into prime discriminants. Then, for any positive integer k coprime with d, the congruence holds trivially as each Legendre-Jacobi-Kronecker symbol (~) has the value + 1 or -1. Expanding this product gives ~ eld e:=l (mod4) where e runs through the positive and negative divisors of d and v (e) denotes the number of distinct prime factors of e. Summing this congruence for o

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beilinson's Conjectures on Special Values of L-Functions deals with Alexander Beilinson's conjectures on special values of L-functions. Topics covered range from Pierre Deligne's conjecture on critical values of L-functions to the Deligne-Beilinson cohomology, along with the Beilinson conjecture for algebraic number fields and Riemann-Roch theorem. Beilinson's regulators are also compared with those of Émile Borel. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the Beilinson conjectures and the theory of Chern classes from higher k-theory. The "simplest" example of an L-function is presented, the Riemann zeta function. The discussion then turns to Deligne's conjecture on critical values of L-functions and its connection to Beilinson's version. Subsequent chapters focus on the Deligne-Beilinson cohomology; ?-rings and Adams operations in algebraic k-theory; Beilinson conjectures for elliptic curves with complex multiplication; and Beilinson's theorem on modular curves. The book concludes by reviewing the definition and properties of Deligne homology, as well as Hodge-D-conjecture. This monograph should be of considerable interest to researchers and graduate students who want to gain a better understanding of Beilinson's conjectures on special values of L-functions.

We first look at p-adic families in the following cases: general linear groups, symplectic groups and definite unitary groups. We also look at applications of this theory to modularity lifting problems. We finally consider p-adic L-functions for GL(2), the p-adic adjoint L-functions and some cases of higher GL(n).

Book excerpt: Iwasawa theory began in the late 1950s with a series of papers by Kenkichi Iwasawa on ideal class groups in the cyclotomic tower of number fields and their relation to $p$-adic $L$-functions. The theory was later generalized by putting it in the context of elliptic curves and modular forms. The main motivation for writing this book was the need for a total perspective of Iwasawa theory that includes the new trends of generalized Iwasawa theory. Another motivation is to update the classical theory for class groups, taking into account the changed point of view on Iwasawa theory. The goal of this second part of the three-part publication is to explain various aspects of the cyclotomic Iwasawa theory of $p$-adic Galois representations.

The goal of this first part of the two-part publication is to explain the theory of ideal class groups, including its algebraic aspect (the Iwasawa class number formula), its analytic aspect (Leopoldt–Kubota $L$-functions), and the Iwasawa main conjecture, which is a bridge between the algebraic and the analytic aspects. The second part of the book will be published as a separate volume in the same series, Mathematical Surveys and Monographs of the American Mathematical Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume incorporates a number of results which were discovered and/or systematized since the first volume was being written. Again, I limit myself to the cyclotomic fields proper without introducing modular func tions. As in the first volume, the main concern is with class number formulas, Gauss sums, and the like. We begin with the Ferrero-Washington theorems, proving Iwasawa's conjecture that the p-primary part of the ideal class group in the cyclotomic Zp-extension of a cyclotomic field grows linearly rather than exponentially. This is first done for the minus part (the minus referring, as usual, to the eigenspace for complex conjugation), and then it follows for the plus part because of results bounding the plus part in terms of the minus part. Kummer had already proved such results (e.g. if p, (h; then p, (h;). These are now formulated in ways applicable to the Iwasawa invariants, following Iwasawa himself. After that we do what amounts to " Dwork theory," to derive the Gross Koblitz formula expressing Gauss sums in terms of the p-adic gamma function. This lifts Stickel berger's theorem p-adically. Half of the proof relies on a course of Katz, who had first obtained Gauss sums as limits of certain factorials, and thought of using Washnitzer-Monsky cohomology to prove the Gross-Koblitz formula
