Artillery The following course of lectures is intended to serve as a manual and guide in the practical laboratory-work in the course of explosives at the U. S. Artillery School. The aim has been to present the subject systematically and logically, due consideration being given to the sequence in which the various classes of explosives are arranged, so that a certain degree of familiarity may be acquired in manipulating the less sensitive and dangerous mixtures before undertaking experiments with the high explosives. Particular attention has been given to the service tests of the various explosives, in the description of which all technical terms have been avoided as far as possible. While the bulk of the matter here presented is the result of compilation, it is believed that a portion at least appears i in print for the first time. In submitting these pages I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness for assistance and encouragement to Professor Munroe, and Lieutenant-Colonel R. T. Frank, 2d Artillery, Commandant of the Artillery School. With the permission of Professor C. E. Munroe, Chemist to the U. S. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Explosives The concluding chapters of this book were written while the author was in the last stages of a severe illness, to which he succumbed on August 15th, 1910, at Wahroonga, New South Wales. William Russell Quinan was born in Maryland, U.S.A., in 1848. He graduated from West Point, the Military Academy of the United States, in 1870, having distinguished himself for proficiency in mathematics and the physical sciences. After some years' service in the artillery, he resigned his commission in 1881 to devote himself to the development and manufacture of industrial explosives. His first engagement was with the California Vigorit Powder Company. From 1883 until 1899 he was Superintendent of the California Powder Works. In 1899 he was engaged by the late Cecil Rhodes to build a dynamite factory in South Africa, and was appointed General Manager of the Cape Explosives Works, Limited. He remained with this company until the end, and it was while in Australia in its interest, that the last illness overtook him. As member of a number of scientific societies, he was an occasional contributor to the journals, but his active duties did not leave him much time to write for publication - his best work being done in his official reports to his Directors. He was prolific as an inventor, though most of his inventions were not patented. Among the most important of his inventions relating to the explosives industry were the Crusher Gauge for testing high explosives, the Quinan Packing Machine (the first successful machine for packing dynamite into cartridges), improvements in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, and numerous explosive compositions. Quinan was distinguished, not only for his scientific attainments, but for his integrity of character, his loyal friendship and his loving characteristics as husband and father. Berthelot has for some years been a mine from which copious stores of valuable matter have been obtained and translated into various languages. So far, however, no English translation or adaptation of the book, as a whole, has appeared. The idea of making such a translation, or, rather, condensation, of M. Berthelot's somewhat bulky volumes occurred some time ago to Mr. Hake and myself. Circumstances, however, notably the appointment of Mr. Hake to the Inspectorship of Explosives in the Colony of Victoria, and a considerable pressure on my own time, prevented our carrying out this project in the way originally intended. But Mr. Macnab, then associated with, and subsequently successor to, Mr. Hake in his London business, has undertaken and carried out the larger portion of the very laborious work involved, and thus it is really to his energy and kindness that the work as it now appears is due. M. Berthelot's reputation as a scientist is world-wide; his attention was first especially drawn to explosives in the year 1870, and his labours have been continued with little, if any, intermission to the present time. The great key-note of the work now translated is the application of thermo-chemistry to the study of explosives. Though not the first in this field, yet M. Berthelot has, in the extent and variety of his researches, eclipsed his colleagues, and it is mainly due to him that thermo-chemistry occupies the position which it now holds in this department of science.
