Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Other Theological Papers That which a general course of Lectures on Theology like the present one naturally commences with, is the subject of Evidence. I shall not, however, enter into the consideration of the general fabric of the Christian Evidences, which is well known to you from the works of many able writers who have devoted themselves to that subject. I shall be doing perhaps something more useful if I call attention to some particular danger connected with the subject of evidence at this day, and endeavour to throw some light on the way in which it is to be met. Apart from, and quite independently of, the particular arguments which unbelievers may use, it is to be observed that the mere existence of a large body of unbelief around us is itself a danger and a disturbance to us. It impresses the imagination. Such mere quantity of unbelief seems to be an argument in itself against revelation. We are perpetually reminded of it in the books of the day, in newspapers and reviews. It does not allow itself to be passed over; it obtrudes itself upon us at every turn; we cannot help observing it. All this affects the imagination. Unbelief is a great fact; it arrests us, and takes hold of our minds as such. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Outlines on the Thirty-Nine Articles The publication of these Lecture Outlines calls for a word of explanation. My original intention was to have an outline of lectures printed for the use of my own students. But, through consultation with friends who are engaged in the work of theological teaching, I have been led to believe that the publication of such an outline would meet a more general need. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Pastoral Theology There is danger, however, that in our theological seminaries, both the study and the practice of pastoral duties will be compara tively n.eglected In the ardor of their literary and theological pur suits, there IS danger that young men will overlook those important lessons on this subject which they will be called so soon to reduce to practice. The teachers in our seminaries should-be' aware of this danger, that they may the more effectually guard against it. On the Russell Foundation, Easter Week, 1922 Christ, who inspires and enables men to live and labor for his Kingdom. In so comprehensive a survey of Pagan and Chris tian ways of salvation, few men would attempt to base all their conclusions on original sources. I, at least, profess to have made use, in a number of the chapters, of the most recent and trustworthy authorities. In the footnotes I have mentioned the names of some of the authors whose books and articles I have consulted. I desire especially to call the attention of the reader to Professor Kilpatrick's articles in Hastings' Encyclo pedia of Religion and Ethics, on Salvation (chris tian and on Soteriology, respectively, these are'of unusual excellence and were most helpful to me in the preparation of Chapter III. As a rule, where I quote from German books, I am responsible for the English translation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Thought: Lectures and Papers on Philosophy, Christian Evidence, Biblical Elucidation In this way, from the theological side, faith is made to seem at enmity with reason, wherever religious truth is concerned. In the affairs of common life, Reason may be followed and be trusted Iby the devout and undevout alike. But she is not to gather up an inference, or to trace an analogy, which might tempt her upon forbidden ground; upon ground, that is, which is con sidered as belonging exclusively to Faith. From that sphere Reason would be repelled as an intruder, or, at most, called in to ratify conclusions dictated by Faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, Clark Pinnock along with four other scholars published The Openness of God, which set out a new evangelical vision of God—one centered on his open, relational, and responsive love for creation. Since then, the nature of God has been widely discussed throughout the evangelical community. Now, Pinnock returns with Most Moved Mover to once again counter the classical, deterministic view of God and defend the relationality and openness of God. This engaging defense of openness theology begins with an analysis of the current debate, followed by an explanation of the misconceptions about openness theology, and a delineation of areas of agreement between classical and openness theologians. Most Moved Mover is for all evangelicals, regardless of their viewpoint, as it lays out the groundwork for future discussions of the open view of God.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Law and the Gospel Gospel of the Blessed God, stated in simplicity and clear ness, in perfect accordance with the instructions of the Holy Scripture, and the Liturgy, Articles, and Homilies of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He humbly trusts that the Glorious Jesus whom he worships as his Lord and his God, -his Great God and Saviour, - will be still pleased to use this work for the manifestation of his glory, the bringing of the vessels of his mercy to an acknowledgment and obedience of the truth, and the guarding of his Church against the vital and dangerous errors which these days have again brought forth, all of which, the author believes, originate in an ignorance, or in confused views, of the relations of the Law and the Gospel to each other and to man. He has also in prepa ration, should his life be spared for their publication, two other works in connection with this; the one under the title of Christ is all, displaying these precious truths in the actual experience of mam - and the other under the title of The good Confession, exhibiting the outward manifestation of their influence and Operation in the Chris tian life. He humbly hopes, and for this end, begs the prayers of Christian friends, that the Glorious King of Zion will graciously accept his efforts in these books to proclaim the truth, to the promotion of his own glory, and the edifying of his Church. And committing his labours to Him, he would adore and glorify God, the Father, the Son, and the Holv Ghost, one Almighty, Gracious God, with thanksgivings and praise, for evermore. Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pharisees and Jesus: The Stone Lectures for 1915-16 Delivered at the Princeton Theological Seminary Portions of this volume were delivered as lectures on the L. P. Stone Foundation the last week in February 1916, before the Princeton Theological Seminary. The author recalls with pleasure the kindly interest of Faculty and Students during those days. The lectures have been revised and enlarged and adapted to the purpose of the present volume. It is a gratifying sign of the times that modern Jewish scholars exhibit a friendly spirit towards Jesus and Christianity. It is highly important that Jews and Christians understand each other. That is the best way to appreciate and to admire the good in each other. The treatment of Jesus by the Pharisees and of the Pharisees by Jesus is an inflammable subject for some minds, but it is one that has to be discussed and, indeed, has been discussed with great fidelity. Recent efforts to get a new conception of the Pharisees make it necessary to review the whole problem in the light of the new knowledge. If the story is a sad one, it must be remembered that the facts of history cannot be changed. We must learn the lesson of love and mutual forbearance from the strife of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of Paul's Religion: The James Sprunt Lectures, Delivered at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia Of the origin of Christianity upon the apostle Paul. Jesus Himself, the author Of the Christian movement, wrote nothing - at least no writings Of His have been preserved. The record of His words and deeds is the work Of others, and the date and authorship and historical value of the documents in which that record is contained are the subject Of persistent debate. With regard to the genuineness of the principal epistles Of Paul, on the other hand, and with regard to the value Of at least part of the outline Of his life which is contained in the Book of Acts, all serious historians are agreed. The testi mony of Paul, therefore, forms a fixed starting-point in all controversy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ in Recent Research The present volume is composite in its origin; and yet, although it was something of an afterthought to print the papers of which it is composed together, they have a considerable degree of unity both of time and purpose. All but one have been written within very little more than a year; and in several cases, as will be readily seen, one has grown out of another. The nucleus of the volume is formed by four lectures delivered in response to an invitation from Cambridge. They had also been rehearsed at Oxford; and the opportunity has been taken to add to them two supplementary lectures given here in the early summer of this year. Almost at the same time with the invitation from Cambridge I received another to lecture at the Church House; and this lecture appears as No. I of the present series ('The Symbolism of the Bible'), the idea in my mind being that some conception of the extent and nature of Biblical Symbolism would be helpful in connexion with the other lectures.
