Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture-Notes on Theoretical Chemistry The study of theoretical chemistry has not, in general, met with that recognition and appreciation which is warranted by the interest and importance attaching to this branch of chemical science. Seeking. For an explanation, it appears that to many this study presents considerable difficulty, on account of the num ber and variety of themes - frequently exhibiting no organic connection-to which the attention of the student is invited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Chemistry The lectures now published were delivered before the Lowell Institute, in Boston, in the autumn of 1872. They shed to present the modern theories of chem iatry to an intelligent but not a professional audience, and to give to the philosophy of the science a logi cal consistency, by resting it on the law of Avogadro. Since many of the audience had studied the elements of chemistry, as they were formerly taught under the dualistic system, it was also made an object to point out the chief characteristics by which the new chemistry differed from the old. The limitations of a course of popular lectures necessarily precluded a full prescn ta tion of the subject, and only the more prominent and less technical features of the new system were discussed. In writing out his notes for the press, the author has retained the lecture style, because it is so well adapted for the popular exposition of scientific subjects; but Im. It will be found to contain all that are suggested in the revised syllabus of the subject for the First or Elemen tary stage, and many others besides. The author is indebted to the series of Lectures de livered from time to time by Dr Frankland, and also to his Lecture Notes on Inorganic Chemistry, for the method of treating the subject, and for many of the explanations of Chemical phenomena given throughout the work. To this work, and to the work on Inorganic Chemistry in the present series, the author would refer the reader for further information on the theoretical part of the subject. The illustrations in the book are principally from photographs of the actual apparatus used, kindly taken by an old pupil. A few from drawings by another friend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational chemistry has become extremely important in the last decade, being widely used in academic and industrial research. Yet there have been few books designed to teach the subject to nonspecialists. Computational Chemistry: Introduction to the Theory and Applications of Molecular and Quantum Mechanics is an invaluable tool for teaching and researchers alike. The book provides an overview of the field, explains the basic underlying theory at a meaningful level that is not beyond beginners, and it gives numerous comparisons of different methods with one another and with experiment. The following concepts are illustrated and their possibilities and limitations are given: - potential energy surfaces; - simple and extended Hückel methods; - ab initio, AM1 and related semiempirical methods; - density functional theory (DFT). Topics are placed in a historical context, adding interest to them and removing much of their apparently arbitrary aspect. The large number of references, to all significant topics mentioned, should make this book useful not only to undergraduates but also to graduate students and academic and industrial researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study guide aims at explaining theoretical concepts encountered by practitioners applying theory to molecular science. This is a collection of short chapters, a manual, attempting to walk the reader through two types of topics: (i) those that are usually covered by standard texts but are difficult to grasp and (ii) topics not usually covered, but are essential for successful theoretical research. The main focus is on the latter. The philosophy of this book is not to cover a complete theory, but instead to provide a set of simple study cases helping to illustrate main concepts. The focus is on simplicity. Each section is made deliberately short, to enable the reader to easily grasp the contents. Sections are collated in themed chapters, and the advantage is that each section can be studied separately, as an introduction to more in-depth studies. Topics covered are related to elasticity, electrostatics, molecular dynamics and molecular spectroscopy, which form the foundation for many presently active research areas such as molecular biophysics and soft matter physics. The notes provide a uniform approach to all these areas, helping the reader to grasp the basic concepts from a common set of theoretical tools.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: For the New Century Issue of the journal "Theroretical Chemistry Accounts" the advisory editors identified papers from the first century of theoretical chemistry and discussed their importance for the twentieth century with an eye towards the twenty-first century. Sixty-six such perspectives are published in the New Century Issue. To make this unique collection available to younger scientists for entertaining reading and re-reading of the original publications, the publisher decided to reprint a special edition of the issue.
