Este m?todo se viene usando desde las edad Antigua, Media y Moderna, recibi? el nombre de Alfab?tico por seguir el orden del alfabeto. Durante el florecimiento de Grecia (siglo VI al IV a. de c.) Dionisio de Halicarnaso (Asia Menor), en su libro de la composici?n de las palabras dice: "cuando aprendemos a leer, ante todo aprendemos los nombres de las letras, despu?s su forma y despu?s de esto las palabras y sus propiedades, cuando hemos llegado a conocer esto, comenzamos finalmente a leer y escribir s?labas por silaba al principio". Durante la vida Floreciente de Roma(siglo III a. c. al v.d.c.) marco Fabio Quintilano aconsejaba: "Que antes de ense?ar el nombre de las letras se hicieran ver las formas de las mismas que se adaptasen letras movibles de marfil y se hiciesen ejercicios preparatorios medaitne un estilete que deb?a pasarse por las letras ahuecadas en una, tablita, para que se adquiriese soltura de mano". Recomendaba adem?s "que no se tuviera prisa" M?s lo sustancial en ?l era tambi?n esto: "Conocer en primer lugar perfectamente las letras, despu?s unir unas a las otras y leer durante mucho tiempo despacio..." Esto implicaba que el aprendizaje era lento, pues a los estudiantes les produc?a confusi?n al aprender primer el nombre de la graf?a y posteriormente sus combinaciones.

The Spanish they may have been exposed to in childhood may not be sufficient when they find themselves as adults in more demanding environments, academic or professional. Heritage language learners appear in a wide spectrum of proficiency, from those who have a low level of speaking abilities, to those who may have a higher degree of bilingualism, but not fluent. Whatever the individual case may be, these heritage speakers of Spanish have different linguistic and pedagogical needs than those students learning Spanish as a second or foreign language. The members of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) have identified teaching heritage learners as their second greatest area of concern (after proficiency testing). Editors Ana Roca and Cecilia Colombi saw a great need for greater availability and dissemination of scholarly research in applied linguistics and pedagogy that address the development and maintenance of Spanish as a heritage language and the teaching of Spanish to U.S. Hispanic bilingual students in grades K-16.
