Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Practice of Medicinal Chemistry, 2E, is a single-volume source on the practical aspects of medicinal chemistry. The successful first edition was nicknamed "The Bible" by medicinal chemists, and the second edition has been updated, expanded and refocused to reflect developments over the last decade. Emphasis is put on how medicinal chemists conduct their search for and design of new drug entities. In contrast to competing books, it focuses on the chemistry rather than pharmacological concepts or descriptions of the various therapeutic classes of drugs. Most medicinal chemists working in the pharmaceutical industry are organic synthetic chemists who must acquire a strong knowledge of medicinal chemistry as they enter the industry. This book aims to be their practical handbook - a complete guide to the drug discovery process. - The only book available dealing with the practical aspects of medicinal chemistry - Serves as a complete guide to the drug discovery process, from conception of the molecules to drug production - Updated chapters devoted to the discovery of new lead compounds, including combinatorial chemistry

Download or read book Modern Drug use written by R.D. Mann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541), commonly called Paracelsus, was both one of the most original medical thinkers of the sixteenth century and was the man who made opium (as laudanum), arsenic, copper sulphate, iron, lead, mercury, potassium sulphate, and sulphur part of the pharmacopoeia. A man of many parts, but a pioneer chemist, Paracelsus can be regarded as the originator of a body of work which was the precursor of chemical pharmacology and therapeutics. To no small extent he stands, therefore, as a father figure of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Today's physician who wants to look at that industry since the days of Paracelsus and weigh the great gains against the problems soon encounters difficulties. To diminish them, this Enquiry approaches its subject from historical principles. This gives increased perspective to questions asked late in the boo- these questions being prompted by medical practice outside the industry and some twenty years of drug development activity within it. In antiquity medicines often seem to have been used as part of magic and primitive man thought disease to be due to supernatural forces which he could influence. The legacy remains - and in trying to sort out what is rational in our use of drugs today we have to separate our small bits of science from the ancient magic and from modern commercial pressures and conditioning.
Book Synopsis S. Weir Mitchell, 1829–1914 by : Nancy Cervetti
Download or read book S. Weir Mitchell, 1829–1914 written by Nancy Cervetti and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-08-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modern biography provides a comprehensive and balanced view of a legendary figure in American medicine. Controversial because of his fierce fight against women’s rights, S. Weir Mitchell achieved stunning success through his experimentation with venomous snakes, treatment of Civil War soldiers with phantom limbs and burning pain, and creation of the rest cure to treat hysteria and neurasthenia. Mitchell’s life was extraordinary—interesting in its own right and as a case study in the larger inquiry into nineteenth-century medicine and culture.

Download or read book Brain, Mind, and Medicine written by Robert Guskind and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Richet was one of the most remarkable figures in the history of medical science. He is best known for his work on the body's immune reactions to foreign substances for which he won the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1913. Richet was also a poet, playwright, historian, bibliographer, political activist, classical scholar, and pioneer in aircraft design.Brain, Mind, and Medicine is the first major biography of Richet in any language. Wolf brilliantly situates Richet's work in the intellectual currents of Europe during the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Richet was a contemporary of Wilhelm Wundt and William James. All three considered psychology to be an aspect of physiology governed by biological laws. But while James and Wundt considered consciousness as a process influenced by experience without much reference to neural structures, Richet's focus was on the brain itself as shaped by genetics and experience and serving as the organ of the mind.Brain, Mind, and Medicine illuminates a significant chapter in scientific and cultural history. It should be read by medical scientists, historians, and individuals interested in medicine and psychology.
