Book Synopsis Etudes et leçons sur la Révolution Française by : Alphonse Aulard
Download or read book Etudes et leçons sur la Révolution Française written by Alphonse Aulard and published by . This book was released on 1913 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphonse Aulard (1849-1928) was the first French historian to use nineteenth-century historicist methods in the study of the French Revolution. Pioneered by German historians such as Leopold van Ranke, this approach emphasised empiricism, objectivity and the scientific pursuit of facts. Aulard's commitment to archival investigation is evidenced by the many edited collections of primary sources that appear in his extensive publication record. In these eight volumes of papers analysing the French Revolution (published 1893-1921), Aulard sought to apply the principles of historicism to reveal the truth. The work draws on earlier journal articles and lectures which Aulard delivered as Professor of the History of the French Revolution at the Sorbonne, a post he had held since 1885. Volume 7 (1913) includes essays on feudalism under Louis XVI, regionalism, centralisation, Carlyle's history of the Revolution (also reissued in this series), economic history, and Aulard's personal reflections on his teaching career.
Book Synopsis Secret Origins of Modern Microeconomics by : Robert Burton Ekelund
Download or read book Secret Origins of Modern Microeconomics written by Robert Burton Ekelund and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-03-15 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using documents previously unavailable in English, the authors present a cohesive and original picture of French economic thought that solidly documents the contributions of Dupuit and his colleagues. Ekelund and Hebert build their argument by focusing on the development of economic theory in the peculiar milieu of postrevolutionary France in an attempt to identify the essence of the French contribution and the extent to which the French legacy benefited other economists of international acclaim. They conclude that the kinds of issues in economic theory and policy that Dupuit and his colleagues found arresting and worthy of analysis in the nineteenth century are still pertinent today and will continue to interest economists into the twenty-first century. This seminal work will be of great importance to historians of economics and all economists interested in the foundations of modern microeconomics.

Book Synopsis In Search of an Economic Quantum In the World Economy. by : Aline de Valdomond

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the World Gross Domestic Product WGDP as a representation of all the production by humankind, is it possible to define a smallest common quantitative measure, an economic quantum at an individual level, whose aggregate will lead to the word GDP ? Is this economic quantum the GDP by an individual, produced using his sole physical forces of some 180 kWh/year ? Or is this economic quantum the GDP of an ancient Roman or Greek democratic citizen with his 100 slaves, with 15 000 kWh/year ? In any case, the average individual today in Europe uses 47 000 kWh per year, which is much higher than expected if each citizen had only 100 virtual slaves at his disposal. Written by a non-specialist, a scientific economy student, this essay is a kind of visit through the arcanes of modern finance. It reviews elements of economic theories, applies a historical perspective, reviews the link between population, economy and ecology, and the question of the ecological balance, discovers systemic economic wars, see why the current institutional and legal setting is inadequate, then derive a few practical aphorisms and a speculative model of a world organisation.

Book Synopsis A Philosophy of Catastrophes or a Catastrophe of Philosophies by : Jacques Richard
Download or read book A Philosophy of Catastrophes or a Catastrophe of Philosophies written by Jacques Richard and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many currents in philosophical writings, that deal with today's serious ecological problems and the catastrophes they engender. The aim of this book is to show the diversity of these currents and to judge them on the basis of their ability to provide us with concrete tools for getting out of the ecological impasse in which we find ourselves today, notably the urgency to find new types of ecological and human management. Some of these currents are hopeless: they only offer the prospect of a mental adaptation to these catastrophes, or invite us to leave planet earth and take refuge on other planets. Others, of a cynical bent, openly support the forces that have led to the current situation of 'ecological bankruptcy', arguing that the same economic system that has led us to the current ecological impasse will be able to provide us with miraculous technical solutions for our salvation. Still others, the vast majority, are so cut off from the realities of today's economic world, and in particular from the problems of practical business management, that their very general views offer very few operational solutions for changing the situation. And yet there are some philosophies, admittedly very few in number, that seem appropriate to the radical transformation that is needed of the management of capitalist firms: the philosophy of catastrophes is not necessarily synonymous with a catastrophe of philosophies. The author draws on philosophy , economics, accounting, and history to address what many consider humanity’s most serious challenge.
Book Synopsis Europe's Century of Crises Under Dollar Hegemony by : Brendan Brown
Download or read book Europe's Century of Crises Under Dollar Hegemony written by Brendan Brown and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book showcases written dialogue from Brendan Brown and Philippe Simonnot on the subject of European monetary turmoil past and present and what hope there could be for future reform. Starting with the collapse of the gold standard in 1914, proceeding to the brief gold-dollar standard of the mid inter-war years, on to the collapse of Bretton Woods and the heyday of the Deutsche mark and ultimately discussing the euro, this book looks at a broad range of financial history alongside many new and provoking hypotheses about the devastating monetary turbulence of the successive eras, always with a focus on the US monetary hegemon. A highlight of the dialogue is an exploration of how past and future crises could combine to give birth to sound money in Europe – the launch, in effect, of a new euro. In the questions and answers within these pages, the authors draw on global examples and the challenges for Europe in deciding how to adapt to successive monetary shocks from the US, crafting a book that would be of interest to general finance and economics readers alongside students, researchers, and policymakers.

Book Synopsis General and Periodic Crises of Overproduction by : Jean Lescure
Download or read book General and Periodic Crises of Overproduction written by Jean Lescure and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Lescure’s two-volume General and Periodic Crises of Overproduction is a pioneering study of the causes and consequences of industrial crises in capitalist economies in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The author, who held doctorates in political economy and law, is most remembered as a founder of the French historical school and a staunch advocate of empiricism in the economic sciences. Lescure called his approach the ’complex historical method’, by which he sought to revise classical and quantitative economic theory through the historical analysis and statistical observation of cyclical phenomena. Ever the controversialist, Lescure wrote in an engaging style, accessible to non-specialists and economists alike, and critiqued the leading monetary theorists of the period, insisting that observation of the movements in production costs, industrial orders and profits be given priority over circulation and credit in understanding the periodic crises of capitalist economies. In Lescure’s view, crises were inevitable in both market and command economies and their onset and consequences were predictable with the help of the more detailed production statistics newly available to economists and entrepreneurs at the time. Observation of corporate profits, the margin between cost price and selling price, provided the means to predict crises and measure their impact, not only on industry and trade but also on the working classes who would endure unemployment and the many social ills that accompany it. Lescure, unlike many of the liberal economists of the time, was always careful to include in his historical account statistical analysis of unemployment figures, as well as those on crime, marriage and birth rates, homelessness and suicide. Although he remained sceptical of government intervention in the form of monetary policies adjusting the money supply, and lauded the success of industrial concentration and trusts in reducing costs and prices, Lescure admitted the state’s role in the recovery of the 1930s, when social insurance schemes and investment in public works mitigated the worst effects of unemployment for industrial labour. This treatise, which grew out of his doctoral work, was a lifetime project for Lescure, who updated it periodically over five editions, to include each new cycle of growth, crisis, depression and recovery. Volume one provides a historical study of economic crises from the post-Napoleonic period through the Great Depression and the recovery of the late 1930s. Volume two offers a critique of the theories of crises, their causes and potential remedies, in which Lescure outlines his preference for ‘organic’ theories that focus on the production process and qualitative statistical observation of the movements in costs, selling prices, industrial orders and profits. The text of the fifth edition appears here in English for the first time, unabridged and complete with editorial materials designed to help the English reader understand the work on its own terms and situate its author’s prominent place in the history of economic thought.
