In this work, we investigate both, the underlying machine learning techniques and their application to knowledge acquisition in the Semantic Web.

The field of Neurosymbolic AI aims to combine two disparate approaches to AI; symbolic reasoning and neural or connectionist approaches such as Deep Learning. The quest to unite these two types of AI has led to the development of many innovative techniques which extend the boundaries of both disciplines. This book, Compendium of Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, presents 30 invited papers which explore various approaches to defining and developing a successful system to combine these two methods. Each strategy has clear advantages and disadvantages, with the aim of most being to find some useful middle ground between the rigid transparency of symbolic systems and the more flexible yet highly opaque neural applications. The papers are organized by theme, with the first four being overviews or surveys of the field. These are followed by papers covering neurosymbolic reasoning; neurosymbolic architectures; various aspects of Deep Learning; and finally two chapters on natural language processing. Book excerpt: In this book, we detail different theories, methods and implementations combining Web 2.0 paradigms and Semantic Web technologies in Enterprise environments. After introducing those terms, we present the current shortcomings of tools such as blogs and wikis as well as tagging practices in an Enterprise 2.0 context. We define the SemSLATES methodology and the global vision of a middleware architecture based on Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data principles (languages, models, tools and protocols) to solve these issues. Then, we detail the various ontologies that we build to achieve this goal. We present on the one hand the models dedicated to socio-structural meta-data, especially SIOC – Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities –, and on the other hands models extending public ontologies for representing domain knowledge. Moreover, we detail the MOAT – Meaning Of A Tag – ontology, providing a way to combine the flexibility of tagging and the power of ontology-based indexing. We also describe several software implementations related to these models, done in the industrial context of EDF R&D, and dedicated to easily produce and use semantic annotations to enrich original tools: semantic wikis, advanced visualization interfaces (faceted browsing, semantic mash-ups, etc.) combined with a semantic search engine. Several contributions described in this thesis have been published as public ontologies or open-source software, contributing more generally to this convergence between Web 2.0 and the Semantic Web, not only in enterprise but on the Web as a whole.

Over the course of several publications, they expose and support their findings, while discussing stated claims. Such discourse structures are trapped within the content of the publications, thus making the semantics discoverable only by humans. In addition, the lack of advances in scientific publishing, where electronic publications are still used as simple projections of paper documents, combined with the current growth in the amount of scientific research being published, transforms the process of finding relevant literature into a cumbersome task. The work presented in this thesis proposes a solution that takes full advantage of the support provided by electronic publications and of the current Semantic Web technologies to expose and crystallise the different discourse structures. The goal is to pave the way towards a Semantic Publishing Ecosystem that will alleviate, at least partly, the information overload problem. Our solution relies on enriching scientific publications with explicit rhetorical and argumentation discourse structures, in addition to explicit linear structures for identification and localization, and bibliographic information. Embedding these structures within the publication documents (as semantic metadata) enables the creation of semantic publications, i.e., foundational artefacts of the Semantic Publishing Ecosystem and linked resources part of the current Web of Data.

These SPARQL endpoints allow users to direct SPARQL queries to the RDF data. Federated SPARQL query processing allows to query several of these RDF databases as if they were a single one, integrating the results from all of them. This is a key concept in the Web of Data and it is also a hot topic in the community. Besides of that, the W3C SPARQL-WG has standardized it in the new Recommendation SPARQL 1.1._x000D_ This book provides a formalisation of the W3C proposed recommendation. This formalisation allows to identify existing errors and allows to correct them before the implementation phase or when the execution of these federated queries start. The book constitutes a valuable resource for any implementer since it also proposes solutions to the problems identified as well as proposing a set of SPARQL pattern reordering rules, which reduce the execution time of federated queries significantly._x000D_ Another strong point of this book is the research methodology followed. It states clearly the problems in the state of the art, next defines the research hypothesis for next providing a thoroughly analysis of the semantics of the SPARQL 1.1 specification. Once the theoretical part is concluded the book steps into the implementation part, describing clearly the implementation decisions for finally evaluating the overall system.

Book excerpt: Mathematics is becoming increasingly collaborative, but software does not sufficiently support that: Social Web applications do not currently make mathematical knowledge accessible to automated agents that have a deeper understanding of mathematical structures. Such agents exist but focus on individual research tasks, such as authoring, publishing, peer-review, or verification, instead of complex collaboration workflows. This work effectively enables their integration by bridging the document-oriented perspective of mathematical authoring and publishing, and the network perspective of threaded discussions and Web information retrieval. This is achieved by giving existing representations of mathematical and relevant related knowledge about applications, projects and people a common Semantic Web foundation. Service integration is addressed from the two perspectives of enriching published documents by embedding assistive services, and translating between different knowledge representations inside knowledge bases. A usability evaluation of a semantic wiki that coherently integrates knowledge production and consumption services points out the remaining challenges in making such heterogeneously integrated environments support realistic workflows. The results of this thesis will soon also enable collaborative acquisition of new mathematical knowledge, as well as the contributions of existing knowledge collections of the Web of Data.

A process model is introduced in the beginning, which serves as framework for developing the target architecture. The first step of the process stipulates to define requirements for smart grid ICT-architectures being derived from established studies and divided into two classes: architecture and non-functional requirements (NFR). Based on the architecture requirements, the following specifications have been basically selected: The IEC CIM representing a domain-specific data model, the OPC UA being a communication standard with special respects to information modeling, and WSMO as an approach to realize the concept of Semantic Web Services. The next step specifies to develop both, a semantic information model (integration of CIM and OPC UA) and semantic services (integration of CIM and WSMO). These two components are then combined to obtain the target architecture, which allows precise descriptions of services as well as their combination and semi-automatic execution. Finally, the NFR are considered in order to evaluate the architecture based on simulated, representative use cases.

Book excerpt: The development of knowledge-based systems is usually approached through the combined skills of knowledge engineers (KEs) and subject matter experts (SMEs). One of the most critical steps in this activity aims at transferring knowledge from SMEs to formal, machine-readable representations, which allow systems to reason with such knowledge. However, this is a costly and error prone task. Alleviating the knowledge acquisition bottleneck requires enabling SMEs with the means to produce the desired knowledge representations without the help of KEs. This is especially difficult in the case of complex knowledge types, like processes. The analysis of different application domains uncovers that process knowledge is one of the most frequent knowledge types, whose complexity requires specific means to enable SMEs to represent processes in a computational form. Additionally, such complexity and the increasingly large amount of data that process executions generate in knowledge-intensive domains, like Biology or Astronomy, requires analytical means with high abstraction capabilities to support SMEs in the analysis of such processes. This book presents methods and tools that enable SMEs to acquire process knowledge from the domains, formally represent such knowledge, reason about it, and understand process executions by analyzing their provenance. We describe the utilization of Problem Solving Methods as the main knowledge artifacts for process acquisition and analysis in two innovative ways. First, as formalizations of the reasoning strategies needed for processes and, second, as high-level, domain-independent, and reusable abstractions of process knowledge to provide SMEs with interpretations of process executions.

The W3C standard OWL defines one of the most important ontology languages based on the semantics of description logics. An alternative is to use rule languages in knowledge modelling, as proposed in the W3C’s RIF standard. So far, it has often been unclear how to combine both technologies without sacrificing essential computational properties. This book explains this problem and presents new solutions that have recently been proposed. Extensive introductory chapters provide the necessary background for understanding the goals and challenges of this field, whereas advanced chapters discuss novel solutions in full detail. Enriched knowledge representation languages that are introduced include DL Rules, Horn description logics, and DL+safe Rules. In each of these cases, emphasis is put on finding a favourable trade-off between expressiveness and computational complexity. This naturally leads to the light-weight DL rule language ELP which illustrates that expressive ontological modelling and tractable inferencing can indeed go together.
