Download or read book Beyond Swat written by B. D. Hopkins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by anthropologists and historians with long-standing research experience in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as expertise in one or more of the region's languages, each chapter explores varying yet interconnected dimensions of the region's culture, society and politics over a broad span of history and their relevance to wider debates about the dynamics shaping this and other comparable 'frontier' spaces. The parallels the authors make cross temporal, as well as spatial boundaries and, in doing so, open up theoretically innovative lines of scholarly enquiry about the Afghanistan-Pakistan Frontier, the nature of Islamic militancy, its connections to ethnicity, class and transformations in the nature of state power, and, more generally, the relationship between anthropology and history.
Book Synopsis Millennium and Charisma Among Pathans by : Akbar Ahmed
Download or read book Millennium and Charisma Among Pathans written by Akbar Ahmed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, this Routledge Revivals reissue presents an analysis of the Swat Pathans, the people of the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, who belong administratively to Pakistan despite being a fiercely independent group, with their own codes and ways of life. Akbar S. Ahmed, who knows the Swat Pathans well through his family connections, presents a clear and sophisticated analysis of their complex society. The study provides an anthropological and critical re-examination of the ethnography of the Swat Pathans and the author suggests specific alternative models of social organization. The book also represents an important contribution to the general debate in the social sciences between the âe~methodological individualistsâe(tm) and the âe~methodological holistsâe(tm), and challenges some of the theoretical and methodological premises in anthropology. In particular the author is critical of Professor Fredrik Barthâe(tm)s study of Swat Pathans, for he believes that the âe~Swat modelsâe(tm) have inadvertently become the basis for generalized, and often incorrect, understanding of models of Pathan socio-political organization in the social sciences.

Book excerpt: Children and youth, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds, are experiencing lifestyle choices their parents never imagined and contributing to the transformation of ideals, traditions, education and adult–child power dynamics. As a result of the advances in technology and media as well as the effects of globalization, the transmission of social and cultural practices from parents to children is changing. Based on a number of qualitative studies, this book offers insights into the lives of children and youth in Britain, Japan, Spain, Israel/Palestine, and Pakistan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon a wealth of previously unresearched primary sources in many languages, the authors shed much new light on a group frequently described as the most lethal actor in the current Afghan insurgency, and shown here to have been for decades at the centre of a nexus of transnational Islamist militancy, fostering the development of jihadi organisations from Southeast Asia to East Africa. Addressing the abundant new evidence documenting the Haqqani network's pivotal role in the birth and evolution of the global jihadi movement, the book also represents a significant advance in our knowledge of the history of al-Qaeda, fundamentally altering the picture painted by the existing literature on the subject.

Book Synopsis War, Violence and Women’s Agency in Pakistan by : Rehana Wagha
Download or read book War, Violence and Women’s Agency in Pakistan written by Rehana Wagha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War, Violence and Women’s Agency in Pakistan investigates the prominent features of gender ideology in the Swat region, Pakistan and how they influence the norms and forms of women’s agency during conflict. After 9/11, the War on Terror brought a new wave of anarchy, extremism and violence to the valley of Swat. This book investigates the socio-political structures in the region and examines their impact on women’s political behaviour. The author asks how these patriarchal socio-political structures have contributed to the formation of women’s subjectivities and their ability to subvert and resist patriarchal regimes of oppression. She examines how women experienced militancy, what led them to support or resist the Taliban and how they coped with everyday violence, displacement and resettlement in the period from 2005 to 2010. Multidisciplinary in its approach, the book analyses the norms and forms of women’s agency under the postmodern structure and agency framework of feminist political theory, which views structure and agency as co-constituted and mutually dependent. Focusing on women’s narratives and the norms and forms of their behaviour from a woman’s perspective, this book is a welcome addition to the analysis of the violence in the Swat region, Pakistan. It will be of interest to scholars of Gender Studies, War and Conflict Studies and South Asian Studies.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Political Leadership by : R. A. W. Rhodes
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Political Leadership written by R. A. W. Rhodes and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 905 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political leadership has made a comeback. It was studied intensively not only by political scientists but also by political sociologists and psychologists, Sovietologists, political anthropologists, and by scholars in comparative and development studies from the 1940s to the 1970s. Thereafter, the field lost its way with the rise of structuralism, neo-institutionalism, and rational choice approaches to the study of politics, government, and governance. Recently, however, students of politics have returned to studying the role of individual leaders and the exercise of leadership to explain political outcomes. The list of topics is nigh endless: elections, conflict management, public policy, government popularity, development, governance networks, and regional integration. In the media age, leaders are presented and stage-managed--spun--DDLas the solution to almost every social problem. Through the mass media and the Internet, citizens and professional observers follow the rise, impact, and fall of senior political officeholders at closer quarters than ever before. This Handbook encapsulates the resurgence by asking, where are we today? It orders the multidisciplinary field by identifying the distinct and distinctive contributions of the disciplines. It meets the urgent need to take stock. It brings together scholars from around the world, encouraging a comparative perspective, to provide a comprehensive coverage of all the major disciplines, methods, and regions. It showcases both the normative and empirical traditions in political leadership studies, and juxtaposes behavioural, institutional, and interpretive approaches. It covers formal, office-based as well as informal, emergent political leadership, and in both democratic and undemocratic polities.

Book Synopsis Breaking the Frames by : Pamela J. Stewart
Download or read book Breaking the Frames written by Pamela J. Stewart and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the breaking and re-making of frames of analysis underlie the history of theorizing in anthropology. Pamela J. Stewart and Andrew J. Strathern note that this mode of analysis risks fabricating over-essentialized dichotomies between viewpoints. The authors advocate a mindful, nuanced, people-centered approach to all theorizing-one that avoids total system approaches (-isms) and suggest that theory should relate cogently to ethnography. Mindful anthropology, as this book envisages it, is not a specific theory but a philosophical aspiration for the discipline as a whole.

Book Synopsis Singing with the Mountains by : William Sherman
Download or read book Singing with the Mountains written by William Sherman and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating story of a Sufi community that sought the revelation of God. In the Afghan highlands of the sixteenth century, the messianic community known as the Roshaniyya not only desired to find God’s word and to abide by it but also attempted to practice God’s word and to develop techniques of language intended to render their own tongues as the organs of continuous revelation. As their critics would contend, however, the Roshaniyya attempted to make language do something that language should not do—infuse the semiotic with the divine. Their story thus ends in a tower of skulls, the proliferation of heresiographies that detailed the sins of the Roshaniyya, and new formations of “Afghan” identity. In Singing with the Mountains, William E. B. Sherman finds something extraordinary about the Roshaniyya, not least because the first known literary use of vernacular Pashto occurs in an eclectic, Roshani imitation of the Qur’an. The story of the Roshaniyya exemplifies a religious culture of linguistic experimentation. In the example of the Roshaniyya, we discover a set of questions and anxieties about the capacities of language that pervaded Sufi orders, imperial courts, groups of wandering ascetics, and scholastic networks throughout Central and South Asia. In telling this tale, Sherman asks the following questions: How can we make language shimmer with divine truth? How can letters grant sovereign power and form new “ethnic” identities and ways of belonging? How can rhyme bend our conceptions of time so that the prophetic past comes to inhabit the now of our collective moment? By analyzing the ways in which the Roshaniyya answered these types of questions—and the ways in which their answers were eventually rejected as heresies—this book offers new insight into the imaginations of religious actors in the late medieval and early modern Persianate worlds.
