Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leading Events in Johnson County Iowa History There are limits to the details that may be incorporated, in the consulting of records, and all may not agree upon the selec tion, but in every instance these have been consulted person ally, if within reach. If there appears to be a repetition in certain portions of paragraphs it. Is for the purpose of indi cating the connections, since to group subject matter under the proper headings and avoid any confusion is somewhat difficult, when it has been collected from so many sources. It may be mentioned that in some instances the desired informa tion has been unobtainable because of deficient records or fail ure to secure any reply to correspondence. The time is fast approaching when the records of even the smallest institution will be considered of value for as the founders pass away those who follow will have no definite information, as to how it began. This may be well illustrated in the average country church, where in many instances there is a history of fifty years without an item on record. Download or read book Coralville written by Timothy Walch and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Coralville is a lot like other small American cities, it is unique as the only community of that name in the United States. Located on the Iowa River, the name refers to the ancient coral reefs that are its geological bedrock. The river has always been a key aspect of Coralville's history, along with its proximity to Iowa City, the first capital of the Territory of Iowa and the home of the University of Iowa. Incorporated as a city in 1873, Coralville had few residents until the 1960s, when dynamic commercial and residential development brought substantial growth to the area. Today, Coralville is a city of industry, commerce, and hospitality. It is not surprising, therefore, that "Coralville Pride" is the city motto.

Book Synopsis There Goes the Neighborhood by : David R. Reynolds

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being the centerpiece of rural educational reform for most of the twentieth century, rural school consolidation has received remarkably little scholarly attention. The social history and geography of the movement, the widespread resistance it provoked, and the cultural landscapes its proponents sought to transform have remained largely unexplored. Now in There Goes the Neighborhood David Reynolds remedies this situation by examining the rural school consolidation movement in that most midwestern of midwestern states, Iowa. From 1912 to 1921, Iowa was the center of national attention as state and local education leaders attempted to implement a new model of rural education, intended to be emulated throughout the rest of the Midwest. As part of the Country Life movement—whose leaders sought to create a more modern future for farm families, an alternative form of rural community that combined the advantages of both city and country—the initially successful model collapsed in the early twenties, not to be revived until after World War II. Reynolds focuses on how and why rural school consolidation was so vigorously resisted in most of Iowa, why it failed in the twenties, and what its lasting consequences have been. Combining social and oral history, modern social theory, historical geography, and ethnography, There Goes the Neighborhood is the most authoritative analysis to date of the politics, geography, and social history of rural school consolidation in any state.
