Book excerpt: In this research, elementary school principals' instructional leadership behavior was evaluated based on the perceptions of elementary school teachers. The research is believed to contribute to the development of instructional leadership behavior of elementary school principals for the development of school organization. A "semi-structured interview technique", one of the qualitative research methods in the literature was used in the research. The study group was made up of elementary school teachers working in Nigde, Turkey, during the 2008-2009 academic year. For the study sample, one teacher from each school was selected at random, resulting in group of twenty elementary school teachers. Based on the content analysis, five themes of instructional leadership behavior were found. These themes are: (1) determination of the school's purpose; (2) management of instruction; (3) evaluation of students; (4) support to teachers; and (5) creation of a regular learning-teaching environment. (Contains 1 table.).

Individual school data as well as aggregated data from 25 studied schools were analyzed in order to form overall conclusion of perceptions of leadership for the elementary schools within the system. -- The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to examine principal perceptions of their leadership behaviors and determine if they aligned with teacher perceptions of these same behaviors using the five practices of exemplary leadership of The Leadership Challenge. The researcher disaggregated the data to identify areas of strength and weakness and compared the perceptions to the teachers they lead. The researcher also disaggregated data to determine the relationship of perceptions based on gender and teacher experience level to determine if either of leadership behaviors affect teacher perceptions of principal leadership. -- Through collecting research surveys of principals and teachers, the quantitative data were analyzed to determine if there was an alignment between teacher perceptions of leadership behaviors and leaders’ self-perceived behaviors. -- Three main findings resulted from the study. First, there was not a significant statistical difference in teacher perceptions of principal practices using the five exemplary leadership behaviors based on years of experience. Second, a gender difference emerged such that female principals were more likely to “challenge the process” than male principals. In other words, female principals showed a greater willingness to take risks and search for new opportunities (at least according to their own self-report). Third, teacher ratings of principal leadership behaviors aligned well with the principals’ own ratings.

Book excerpt: With the educational system in a state of reform and the emphasis on accountability, teacher leaders are emerging in schools, working collaboratively with administrators. This shared leadership provides the vehicle for teachers to lead through various roles, contributing to improved student achievement. A qualitative study was designed to examine the perceptions of teachers and principals on the characteristics and roles of teacher leaders. The research was conducted in three suburban elementary schools from one district in south-central Pennsylvania. Fifty elementary teachers and three principals participated in the study. Based on the review of literature related to the study, a Likert-type scale was utilized to collect the data. The survey findings revealed emerging themes that were substantiated through personal interviews. Results of the study confirmed that certain characteristics and roles are inherent in teacher leaders. The research revealed that the participants viewed teacher leaders as excellent teachers with a strong work ethic and a passion for teaching. The results revealed that teacher leaders influence others through their unfaltering ideologies, which include being optimistic about the future and believing that their vested interest in the community will make a difference. Although formal roles are present, the results indicated that informal roles led teachers to be leaders. Informal roles include promoting school change, making time for continual learning, recognizing the successes of others and collaborating with the administration. Additionally, teacher leaders were recognized by their persistent involvement in sharing their knowledge and working with colleagues, especially toward the success of improving student achievement.

Book excerpt: The concepts of both teacher leadership and principal leadership have emerged as important factors for which schools need to further explore as they strive for lasting change and school improvement. Lasting school improvement is enhanced by leaders who establish collegial structures that facilitate dialogue and the expansion of the voices of the teachers as a means for developing a strong school culture striving toward common goals and visions. The importance of the interactions between teachers and principals and how they both work in leadership positions moving toward school improvement supports the importance of gaining a better understanding of the role of teacher leadership. A mixed-method design, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, was selected for this study. The findings of the study raise concern that communication between the principals and the teachers is not fully implemented. If both positions are to be successful in their leadership capabilities, a mutual understanding as to the expectations for both positions needs to be established. Effective teacher leadership should include opportunities for collaboration and networking to sustain lasting school improvement. Therefore, it is imperative that the principals understand how to cultivate such teacher leaders.
