Book excerpt: Trust: The Winning Formula for Digital Leaders is intended to help you become a more successful digital leader—and maybe a better person (more about this at the end). We know you are thinking, I am not the CEO, or even the Chief Digital Officer, I just work in the ranks of my organization, so how can this book help me? Due to a set of existential threats, like the global pandemic, all businesses are frantically trying to remake themselves into being digital businesses. Digital transformation is taking the world by storm—and everyone in the organization is, or will be, touched by it. We first studied the phenomenon of digital transformation through an extensive survey of global organizations. Called the Patterns of Digitization, the survey examined every aspect of how digital transformation is implemented. We looked at over 500 companies' business strategies, resource allocation, design practices, and looked at their “softer” side, like how the leaders actually communicate with employees. What we learned from this is—that no matter what type and size company you are, you fall into two different camps. Organizations are either "Digitally Developing" (the far majority), or they are "Digitally Mature". Through this analysis, we learned something else very important—Digitally Mature organizations are managed differently. Their leaders "align human & financial resources with the strategy", "create a collaborative, and nimble development environment", "promote open & transparent communication", and initiate other important activities. At the 2020 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation, we presented Digital Leadership: Character and Competency differentiates Digitally Mature Organizations Leaders. Through it we show how the character and competency of these leaders (the foundations of trust) help set them and their organizations apart. Our intention was not to laud Digitally Mature leaders, as it was to help lagging companies grasp what is truly involved in implementing a digital transformation and what they need to do to catch up. This has been our "modus operandi" from the beginning. But just exhorting digital leaders to show more character and demonstrate their competency with digital technologies, is still not enough. To really help them (read you) we needed to go deeper. The jewel of this book is its in-depth interviews with proven, successful digital leaders. And we didn’t stop with just exploring their character and competency, we asked them "how specifically" they build trust through their intentions, integrity, capabilities and results. Of course, these are the “four core values” of Stephen M.R. Covey's Speed of Trust framework and the basis of the book’s 20-question Interview Guide. Now, enjoy the book and see for yourselves how these leaders rely on these very humancentric actions—along with the trust and respect of their people—to lead very aggressive and very complex digital transformations. From the Inside Flap Endorsed by Stephen M.R. Covey, The New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Speed of Trust: The One Thing that Changes Everything. Foreword by Gerald C. Kane, Author of The Technology Fallacy: How People are The Real Key to Digital Transformation Digital Leaders Included in the Book Authors take a deep dive into the actions of successful digital leaders. They built an extensive interview guide, based on Stephen M.R. Covey's now famous Speed of Trust model, and conducted 1:1 interviews with the following global digital leaders: Chuck Sykes (CEO, Sykes Enterprises), Andera Gadeib (CEO, Dialego), Larry Blue (CEO, Bell & Howell), Robert Kallenberg (Director of Strategy and Organization, Porsche AG), Brandon Batten (Owner &Operator, Flying Farmer LLC), Marc Schlichtner (Principal Key Expert, Product, Portfolio & Innovation Management, Siemens Healthineers), Seth Kaufman (President & CEO, Moët Hennessy North America), Deborah Leff (former Global Leader andIndustry CTO of Data Science and AI, IBM), Krishna Cheriath (VP, Head of Digital, Data and Analytics, Zoetis Inc.), Dominik Schlicht (CEO, Talbot New Energy AG), Craig Melrose (Executive Vice President, Digital Transformation Solutions, PTC), Dagmar Wirtz (CEO, 3WIN), and Rahul C. Basole (Managing Director and Global Lead for Visual Data Science, Accenture AI). Visit patternsofdigitization.com From the Back Cover The passion of these authors and their commitment to meaningful research is abundant in this compelling read. They have studied what separates digitally mature companies from the many companies that lag behind and conclude that the ability of their leaders to personally develop and enable trusting relationships is, indeed, the difference-maker. Using the Speed of Trust framework as a guide, the authors conducted direct interviews with digital leaders and show how their integrity, intent, capabilities, and results significantly impact performance across a broad range of transformation goals. The insights and lessons learned from these interviews will be invaluable to digital leaders. The pace of change in the digital world makes it easy to get caught up in the moving target of technology details--e.g. cloud computing, artificial intelligence, etc.--and lose sight of the ever more important, human-centric dimension of building trust. Stephen M.R. Covey The New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Speed of Trust: The One Thing that Changes Everything The book is about (and for) digital leaders, the people in charge of changing the course of their organizations. Authors bring it all together with interview chapters from thirteen digital leaders on how they build trust. Excerpt from the foreword to this book by Gerald Kane This book is a gem. The winning formula developed using interviews with digital leaders from a multitude of industries provides a practical guide to transform any company into a mature digital businesses. Robert Kallenberg, Head of Strategy, Porsche AG The authors have articulated the leadership challenge of the digital era--The ability to digitally transform businesses by cultivating trust. This is a must read for all aspiring digital leaders. Chuck Sykes, CEO, Sykes International Trust is the critical difference-maker in impactful leadership. The authors have clearly identified and elevated this philosophy. It's a great read not only for all business leaders but for every employee in your organization. Book excerpt: How to Lead without Domineering: 29 Smart Leadership Rules is a kind of tool book which contains almost 30 suggestions for self-reflection of leaders in any kind of leading situation – on the job, in a honorary post, or in any other context. Leaders reach their own limits and the limits of others, but how can they overcome these limits? What is characteristic for a good leader and how is it possible to achieve one’s objectives in cooperation with others? Clever and wise leaders support contexts, form relationships, and promote spirit by consolidating the momentum or dynamic of groups, teams, and organizations. Clever leaders rarely use commands or lay down the law, even though instruments of power and their handling are not unknown to them. Clever leadership implies taking risks, as leaders who adopt the principles of this book give up one-dimensional arguing and if-then-logic statements. Professor Dr. Rolf Arnold presents different tools for clever and effective leadership, and he shows how the typical challenges for a leader in the nowadays world can be met. His book is based on recent scientific findings in the field of leadership research and on almost thirty years of practical experience as a leader, supervisor, and coach within different fields and organizations worldwide.

Book excerpt: A powerful call-to-action for gender equity that offers 10 key lessons for women aspiring to a leadership role—be it in politics, business, law, or their local community. Featuring words of wisdom from female leaders like Hillary Clinton and Theresa May, this empowering study reads like a You Are a Badass volume on world leadership. Women make up fewer than 10% of national leaders worldwide. Behind this eye-opening statistic lies a pattern of unequal access to power. Through conversations with some of the world’s most powerful and interesting women—including Jacinda Ardern, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Christine Lagarde, Michelle Bachelet, and Theresa May—Women and Leadership explores gender bias and asks why there aren’t more women in leadership roles. Speaking honestly and freely, these women talk about having their ideas stolen by male colleagues, what it’s like to be called fat or a slut in the media, and what things they wish they had done differently. The stories they tell reveal vividly how gender and sexism affect perceptions of women as leaders. Using current research as a starting point, Julia Gillard and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala—both political leaders in their own countries—analyze the lived experiences of these women leaders. The result is a rare insight into life as a leader and a powerful call to arms for women everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passionate defense of the humanities from one of today's foremost public intellectuals In this short and powerful book, celebrated philosopher Martha Nussbaum makes a passionate case for the importance of the liberal arts at all levels of education. Historically, the humanities have been central to education because they have been seen as essential for creating competent democratic citizens. But recently, Nussbaum argues, thinking about the aims of education has gone disturbingly awry in the United States and abroad. We increasingly treat education as though its primary goal were to teach students to be economically productive rather than to think critically and become knowledgeable, productive, and empathetic individuals. This shortsighted focus on profitable skills has eroded our ability to criticize authority, reduced our sympathy with the marginalized and different, and damaged our competence to deal with complex global problems. And the loss of these basic capacities jeopardizes the health of democracies and the hope of a decent world. In response to this dire situation, Nussbaum argues that we must resist efforts to reduce education to a tool of the gross national product. Rather, we must work to reconnect education to the humanities in order to give students the capacity to be true democratic citizens of their countries and the world. In a new preface, Nussbaum explores the current state of humanistic education globally and shows why the crisis of the humanities has far from abated. Translated into over twenty languages, Not for Profit draws on the stories of troubling—and hopeful—global educational developments. Nussbaum offers a manifesto that should be a rallying cry for anyone who cares about the deepest purposes of education.

Book excerpt: How should we live: how should we care for one another; grow our capabilities to work, to learn, to love and fully realise our potential? This exciting and ambitious book shows how we can re-design the welfare state for this century. The welfare state was revolutionary: it lifted thousands out of poverty, provided decent homes, good education and security. But it is out of kilter now: an elaborate and expensive system of managing needs and risks. Today we face new challenges. Our resources have changed. Hilary Cottam takes us through five 'Experiments' to show us a new design. We start on a Swindon housing estate where families who have spent years revolving within our current welfare systems are supported to design their own way out. We spend time with young people who are helped to make new connections - with radical results. We turn to the question of good health care and then to the world of work and see what happens when people are given different tools to make change. Then we see those over sixty design a new and affordable system of support. At the heart of this way of working is human connection. Upending the current crisis of managing scarcity, we see instead that our capacities for the relationships that can make the changes are abundant. We must work with individuals, families and communities to grow the core capabilities we all need to flourish. Radical Help describes the principles behind the approach, the design process that makes the work possible and the challenges of transition. It is bold - and above all, practical. It is not a book of dreams. It is about concrete new ways of organising that already have been developing across Britain. Radical Help creates a new vision and a radically different approach that can take care of us once more, from cradle to grave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative and balanced examination of our social and political situation in the wake of the Trump presidency—by a cutting-edge philosopher of our times The world is in turmoil. As populist waves roil in the UK, Europe, Turkey, Russia, Asia—and most visibly, the U.S., with the election of Donald Trump—nationalist and extremist political forces threaten the progress made over many decades. Democracies are reeling in the face of nihilism and narcissism. How did we get here? And how, with so much antagonism, cynicism, and discord, can we mend the ruptures in our societies? In this provocative work, philosopher Ken Wilber applies his Integral approach to explain how we arrived where we are and why there is cause for hope. He lays much of the blame on a failure at the progressive, leading edge of society. This leading edge is characterized by the desire to be as just and inclusive as possible, and to it we owe the thrust toward women’s rights, the civil rights movement, the environmental movement, and the concern for oppression in all its forms. This is all evolutionarily healthy. But what is unhealthy is a creeping postmodernism that is elitist, “politically correct,” insistent on an egalitarianism that is itself paradoxically hierarchical, and that looks down on “deplorables.” Combine this with the techno-economic demise of many traditional ways of making a living, and you get an explosive mixture. As Wilber says, for some Trump voters: “Everywhere you are told that you are fully equal and deserve immediate and complete empowerment, yet everywhere you are denied the means to actually achieve it. You suffocate, you suffer, and you get very, very mad.” It is only when members of society’s leading edge can heal themselves that a new, Integral evolutionary force can emerge to move us beyond the social and political turmoil of our current time to offer genuine leadership toward greater wholeness.
