Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Exploring Leadership and Ethical Practice through Professional Inquiry is wonderfully constructed to prompt us to analyze the perplexing problems that inevitably occur when people work in the same institution, through the visions, theories, and moral principles that underlie schools at their best. Marvelous – and marvelously narrated – cases, followed by tools for inquiry and lively reflections are well-designed to engage aspiring and practicing leaders in honing the ethical principles that will guide their own work. Christine Sleeter, PhD Professor Emerita, California State University Monterey Bay Exploring Leadership and Ethical Practice through Professional Inquiry This collection of case studies is a perfect example of the potential role of professional inquiry as a professional learning approach. The truly exceptional achievement of this work is unquestionably the fact that it sought out highly reputed educators in the Ontario, national and international education communities. It is comforting to see that, in spite of their impressive collective knowledge and experience, even the commentators do not always agree when it comes to the most important areas of focus. The result is a multidimensional overview that can easily lead to provocative discussions. This work is a significant addition to the scholarship of educational leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As interest grows in theories of lifelong learning not only across society but also as an area of serious academic study, the need has arisen for a thorough and critical study of the phenomenon. This distillation of the work of renowned writer Peter Jarvis addresses this need, looking at the processes involved in human learning from birth to old age and moving the field on from previous unsystematic and mainly psychological studies. Instead, Jarvis argues that learning is existential, and so its study must be complex and interdisciplinary. The result is a giant step towards building a complete and integrated theory of how humans learn, taking account of existing theories to see if they can be reconciled with a more complex model. Applying his expert analytical approach to this wide-ranging topic, Jarvis looks in detail at: learning in the social context the transformation of experience the outcomes of learning learning and action cognitive theories emotions and learning experiential learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaders face numerous critical crossroads in their careers, moments that can provide extraordinary learning and growth opportunities or ensnare them and prevent further development. The good thing about these passages is that they’re predictable, and with proper preparation, leaders not only can survive them to become stronger but can use these experiences to enhance their leadership, compassion, and effectiveness. This book lays out thirteen specific “leadership passages” based on research, interviews, and coaching of senior executives in such well-known companies as Johnson & Johnson, Novarits, Intel, GE, and Bank of America. For each passage, the authors describe what to expect, how the passage constitutes a choice point, and what effective leaders do to navigate and grow from the challenge. Some of the passages include: moving into a leadership role for the first time, dealing with significant failure for which you are responsible, derailing/losing your job, being acquired/merging, losing faith in the system, understanding the importance of children, family and friends, and personal upheavals such as divorce, illness, and death. The authors provide a wealth of practical tools and techniques to improve your leadership, along with real-life examples from recognizable leaders and breakthrough ways in which companies can use the concept of leadership passages to grow talent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education Leadership and Management have become increasingly important throughout the years due to the complexities that have to be addressed by universities worldwide. This can be seen not only in professionalisation in fields such as faculty management or in areas of quality assurance and internationalisation, but also in the need for exchange and training in academic leadership, such as that of deans or study deans, or of university leadership in general. The Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) is addressing this need in emerging countries by building platforms of exchange and offering training courses. Not only is the programme supporting capacity building of human resources, but it is also specifically focusing on inducing change within the universities, such as introducing new instruments or tools in the area of quality assurance and internationalisation, and addressing specific challenges or setting up new structures in the form of projects in the frame of the training. The ‘National Multiplication Trainings’ Programme under DIES is further addressing the sustainability and multiplication of the DIES Programme, that is, alumni are enabled to implement capacity building in higher education leadership and management in their national context. The articles within this volume of the “Potsdamer Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung” (Potsdam Contributions to Higher Education Research) analyse and share the experiences of such training programmes held in Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Malaysia, Kenya, and Uganda. They all revolve around the best ways to address the needs and challenges in higher education leadership and management, and in building capacities in these areas.
