This book was released on 2020 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to understand the experiences of women in any leadership role with Computer Science or Engineering degrees that have helped them persist and advance in their careers in the context of Silicon Valley. The "leaky pipeline" phenomenon has been described as women leaving the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) track at many stages in the pipeline (K-12, secondary, career). It has resulted in underrepresentation of women at all levels of the career ladder, specifically, for women with Computer Science and Engineering degrees in leadership positions. Using a case study research methodology, this study sought to answer this question: Why do women with Computer Science and Engineering degrees leadership positions in Silicon Valley stay in the field? Ten women in senior leadership roles in high-tech companies in Silicon Valley with at least a Bachelor's in Science degree in Computer Science or Engineering participated in the study. Women in this case study had a job title of Director or above. One-on-one interviews, a review of artifacts, and the researcher's observations of the participants during their participation in the study were analyzed. Four themes emerged from their interviews and artifact review: (a) STEM foundation, (b) grit, (c) Silicon Valley barriers, and (d) career strategies.

Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of CEOs on firm performance and focuses on their role in science-based innovation to answer the question, is it possible to lead highly complex R&D projects and innovation that you do not understand? Today, science and technology move so fast that even managers of R&D teams can become quickly disconnected from new developments. Similarly, business leaders may be required to lead organisations with technical knowledge beyond their own expertise. How to manage teams and retain respect and influence is a recognised challenge. Filled with insight from managers and CEOs in science and technology organisations, the book unlocks the skills required to balance the leadership and managerial needs of the organisation, motivate the technical teams and drive successful innovation in new product development environments. Due to the vital role played by experts in a chosen field of technical and scientific expertise, the book also describes what these specialists need and expect from their leaders. The book is required reading for managers in high tech and scientific environments – the CEO, CSO and the R&D manager. It can also be used as a classroom reference book on the management skills required for leading high-tech projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no secret that the technical world is a male-dominated space. From the cultural belief that Computer Science is a “subject for boys”, to the assumptions and discrimination women experience in the field, it can be challenging for women at every stage to thrive in tech careers. Nevertheless, some high-performing women persist and succeed as leaders in tech despite the gender biases pitted against them. Pratima Rao Gluckman—a female leader in tech herself—embarked on a project to collect stories of the leadership journeys of such women. She wanted to know the details of these women’s stories, and how they accomplished their achievements. What influenced them during their childhoods? Who were their mentors? What successes and failures did they experience? What magical ingredients helped them thrive in a male‐dominated industry? These questions and more inspired Gluckman to interview nineteen women leaders in several levels of technology industry, including VPs, CEOs and directors, all of which are collected in this groundbreaking book, Nevertheless, She Persisted. Whether you are a young woman thinking of a career in software, a middle-career or executive woman, a parent, or a man curious about the role gender plays in tech, this book reveals the secrets, successes, and hidden struggles that women have endured to become both highly accomplished in their technical skills and effective senior leaders in their organizations. Their stories are illuminating, intended to inspire generations of women and help free our society from the limiting belief that ability is somehow linked to gender.

Book excerpt: Thousands of gifted individuals, including women and underrepresented minorities, remain a disproportionally small fraction of those in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Industry, as the largest employer category of those with STEM backgrounds, stands to benefit considerably from greater inclusion of women and underrepresented minorities in the workforce. However, nothing short of a game-changing environment must be created to harness the talent of those not fully represented in the STEM workforce. Advancing Diversity in the US Industrial Science and Engineering Workforce is the summary of a workshop held in May, 2012 by the National Academy of Engineering, focusing on the needs and challenges facing industry in particular, and it is intended to facilitate further discussion and actions to address these complex issues. The workshop provided a forum for leaders from industry, academia, and professional associations to share best practices and innovative approaches to recruiting, retaining, and advancing women and underrepresented minorities in the scientific and engineering workforce throughout the nation's industries.
