This book was released on 1999-10-30 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of American education is a vital and productive field of study. This reference book provides factual information about eminent people and important topics related to the development of American public, private, and parochial schools, covering elementary and secondary levels. In addition to major state and regional leaders and reformers, it includes biographies of significant national educators, philosophers, psychologists, and writers. Subjects embrace important ideas, events, institutions, agencies, and pedagogical trends that profoundly shaped American policies and perceptions regarding education. The more than 350 entries are arranged alphabetically and written by expert contributors. Each entry closes with a brief bibliography, and the volume ends with a list of works for further reading. Entries were drawn from a review of leading history of education textbooks and the History of Education Quarterly. These topics were further refined by comments from leading authorities and the contributors. Most of the contributors are established scholars in the history of education, curriculum and instruction, school law, educational administration, and American history; a few also work as public and private school teachers and thus bring their practical experience to their entries. The period covered begins in the colonial period and continues through the 1990s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban provides an intellectual history of Harvard presidency of James Bryant Conant (1933-1953), situating it within the broader international landscape and drawing out the implication for the current state of higher education with reference to specific leadership policy issues in the sector. Throughout this volume, Urban explores the ways in which Conant achieved largely successful attempts to modernize Harvard by upgrading both its student body and its faculty. He explores the intellectual excellence agenda that Conant pursued both with students and academics, and the ramifications of this. He also considers the nature of Conant's part-time handling of the role of president, the way he delegated campus control to his Provost, Paul Buck, and the ways the two operated together and separately. Urban also looks at Conant's own intellectual breadth, as scientist and humanist, which showed itself prominently in his activities in pursuit of general education reform. Conant's combination of intellect and agenda was unusual for a president in his own time, and is exceedingly rare, if not completely missing, in contemporary university presidencies. In exploring this innovative president's time in office at Harvard, Urban offers pertinent ideas to today's leaders of higher education.

Book excerpt: Educational Research, The National Agenda, and Educational Reform examines the origins, history, nature, purposes, and status of educational research by focusing on the relationships among educational research, the national agenda, educational reform, and the social and behavioral sciences. Its major claim is that the history of educational research is embedded in the nation’s social, political, intellectual, and economic histories. Attention is given to three significant periods: the Progressive Era when modern educational research began to assume its present form; the Post-World-War-II-Era when educators and educational researchers were directed to return to or turn to the academic disciplines; and the Civil Rights Era after the Supreme Court in Brown ended legal racial segregation and raised questions about equality of educational opportunity that are still with us. These were significant periods when there was a clear national agenda shaped by both public and private agencies. Educators and educational researchers adopted policies and strategies in response to concerns and interests expressed by the public, by government officials, and by philanthropies. Researchers’ responses have had long-term consequences as seen in the reaction to The Coleman Report, debates about the merits of quantitative research as opposed to qualitative research, the ongoing discussion about the merits of No Child Left Behind, the achievement gap, the creation of the Institute of Education Sciences, and the emphasis now placed on “scientifically-based research.” The origins of the common school, the work of the philosopher Johann Friedrich Herbart and his followers, and the revolution in scientific method brought about by Charles Darwin’s work are included because they serve as the foundation for educational research. Educational researchers’ identification with and interest in individual performance and ability and their measurement is related to the close relationship educational researchers have had with psychology, a discipline that typically does not focus on social context. The significance of educational researchers’ borrowing from the behavioral sciences, especially psychology, is examined through a discussion of the mental hygiene movement, as supported by private philanthropy, and through consideration of contributors such as G. Stanley Hall, Arnold Gesell, Lewis M. Terman, Daniel Starch, and Stuart A. Courtis.
