Book excerpt: Can stories about a lion provide inspiration for leadership? We believe so. In this book, stories about a lion, fox, sheep, cows, and hyenas with occasional giraffes are told to teach us about the behavior of leaders and those who follow the leaders. Leaders may behave badly, indeed very badly, abuse their power and act without any concern for those who depend on the leader. These stories of betrayal of trust, manifestation of greed, and actions in flagrant selfinterest are reminders of the grave responsibilities of leadership. They are warnings of the traps of leadership and the persuasions of naked power. Societies have long worked to develop rules of behavior that prevent such fall-out. Yet as these stories collected in East-Africa remind us, there is still a long way to go before we can trust leaders to behave in a civilized manner. Indeed, perhaps we need to know these stories to prevent our leaders from falling into the destructive temptation of acting out their raw impulses.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller by the acclaimed, bestselling author of Start With Why and Together is Better. Now with an expanded chapter and appendix on leading millennials, based on Simon Sinek's viral video "Millenials in the workplace" (150+ million views). Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders create environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things. In his work with organizations around the world, Simon Sinek noticed that some teams trust each other so deeply that they would literally put their lives on the line for each other. Other teams, no matter what incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting, fragmentation and failure. Why? The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps general. "Officers eat last," he said. Sinek watched as the most junior Marines ate first while the most senior Marines took their place at the back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort--even their own survival--for the good of those in their care. Too many workplaces are driven by cynicism, paranoia, and self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and cooperation because their leaders build what Sinek calls a "Circle of Safety" that separates the security inside the team from the challenges outside. Sinek illustrates his ideas with fascinating true stories that range from the military to big business, from government to investment banking.

Book excerpt: The Lion Mentality is a book that focuses on leading like a lion while understanding what makes a lion survive in the world that he is born to reign. The lion mentality is about more than being the strongest, or the fastest or the biggest but developing attitude on the lion. When you are driven by passion, purpose, and vision, you will begin to understand why all the other animals fear the lion. God has planted in the DNA of the lion the will to survive and to teach this concept to those that will follow. The Lion is the king because he knows what it takes to make it through another day. This strategy he teaches to those that will follow and desire to develop the lion mentality. The concept of lion leadership was birth out of my desire to watch documentary's that explored the life of a lion. This knowledge of the lion was merged with my passion for leadership and my passion for biblical studies. When both biblical studies come together with leadership studies and the attitude of the lion, you get the "the lion mentality". Lynwood Batts was born in Wilson County, North Carolina to the parents of Allan Harris and Magdalene Batts. He grew up playing with cousins and working on his grandfather's farm, who was a preacher and pastor in the Primitive Baptist Association. In 1984 Lynwood heard the call of God to preach the gospel while living in Syracuse, New York. He later returned to North Carolina where he received the call to pastor at Vaughn's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Elm City, North Carolina. It is there that he continues to develop disciples that have the Lion Mentality.

Stop running away from what scares you most and start chasing the God-ordained opportunities that cross your path. In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day is inspired by one of the most obscure yet courageous acts recorded in Scripture, a blessed and audacious act that left no regrets: “Benaiah chased a lion down into a pit. Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it” (2 Samuel 23:20 -21). Unleash the lion chaser within! #InAPit “Mark has become one of the most important voices for a new generation. Anything he touches changes lives. I appreciate his willingness to take bold risks and go to extraordinary lengths to reach our culture with a message that is truly relevant.” — Ed Young, senior pastor, Fellowship Church “Don’t settle for a normal life. Conquer your fears, accept His anointing, jump into that pit, chase the lion, and watch God’s Kingdom come in amazing ways.” — Christine Caine, founder of Propel Women, author of Unashamed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York State Assemblyman, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, New York City Police Commissioner, Governor of New York, Vice President and, at forty-two, the youngest President ever-in his own words, Theodore Roosevelt "rose like a rocket." He was also a cowboy, a soldier, a historian, an intrepid explorer, and an unsurpassed environmentalist-all in all, perhaps the most accomplished Chief Executive in our nation's history. In Lion in the White House: A Life of Theodore Roosevelt, historian Aida Donald masterfully chronicles the life of this first modern president. TR's accomplishments in office were immense. As President, Roosevelt redesigned the office of Chief Executive and the workings of the Republican Party to meet the challenges of the new industrial economy. Believing that the emerging aristocracy of wealth represented a genuine threat to democracy, TR broke trusts to curb the rapacity of big business. He improved economic and social conditions for the average American. Roosevelt built the Panama Canal and engaged the country in world affairs, putting a temporary end to American isolationism. And he won the Nobel Peace Prize-the only sitting president ever so honored. Throughout his public career, TR fought valiantly to steer the GOP back to its noblest ideals as embodied by Abraham Lincoln. Alas, his hopes for his party were quashed by the GOP's strong rightward turn in the years after he left office. But his vision for America lives on. In lapidary prose, this concise biography recounts the courageous life of one of the greatest leaders our nation has ever known.
