This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, it is a serious concern to manage waste in the environment. Therefore, detailed knowledge of heavy metals, their eco-toxicological and health effects and ecofriendly approaches for their immobilization and detoxification is urgently required to control and minimize the environmental pollution. Composting is one of the popular methods in waste management and there are a lot of issues pertaining to composting. One of it is the leaching of heavy metals. This book discusses thoroughly, the availability, leachability and the speciation of heavy metals in the entire process of composting.

Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE The main objective of composting is to transform organic materials into a stable usable product. Often organic materials which may have limited beneficial use in their raw state or have regulatory disposal constraints can be transformed by composting into marketable products. The limits on beneficial reuse may be regulations or they may be due to the potential for materials to be putrescible or pathogenic. Composting can be a solution for each of these. The implementation of composting on a large scale (in contrast to home or backyard composting) involves materials handling. Technological implementation of composting must be consistent with the biological demand of the system. If the biological system is violated, conditions will not be optimized for composting, and problems such as odor generation, insufficient aeration or moisture, or a combination of these conditions may result. Past problems and closure of facilities have been largely due to violations of the biological systems. Product quality with respect to particle size, inclusions, moisture content and other physical aspects are a function of engineering design. A well designed system must have the biological and engineering principles in harmony at all times.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to provide information on leaching and attenuation of heavy metals on two different soil types applied with sewage sludge (Biosolids). The research was based on soil column leaching procedure to evaluate the leaching capacity of clay and sandy soils. The objectives of the study were: to study the pollution potential of leachate from land application of sewage sludge in relation to the attenuation mechanisms in soils of different characteristics and, to recommend future research aimed at providing a base for development of pollution control procedures and guidelines regarding land disposal of sewage sludge. Two soil types (Norge clay and Dougherty sandy soils), three soil horizons, three treatments and three replications were used for the design of this experiment. The study showed the soil properties most useful in predicting mobility of trace metals in soils are texture, content of iron oxides, content of lime, soil pH, and organic matter. The most mobile heavy metals were zinc and nickel and the least mobile was chromium. There is no general agreement concerning the maximum allowable concentrations of various metals in sewage sludge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive and balanced overview of soil amendments and their effect on the environment. It encompasses both positive and negative aspects of chemical fertilizers that supply nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, lime, micronutrients, and trace metals. Pros and cons are discussed with respect to the optimal and the most environmentally sound use of soil amendments, and guidance is provided on how to minimize the environmental effects of amendments. Natural fertilizers, including manure, sludge, fly ash, phosphogypsum, and byproduct gypsum are also discussed. Alternative agronomic practices and biotechnology that ameliorate or minimize potential adverse effects of fertilizer use are examined in detail. This authoritative and up-to-date treatise is multidisciplinary in nature and international in scope, a powerful reference tool for researchers, a thorough guide for practitioners and policy makers, and an excellent text book for academic courses.
