Book excerpt: A 21st- century Book of Kells that brings together the work of more than 150 poets, visual artists, and calligraphers. Scotland and Ireland share a mythology, a rich music tradition, languages and some history. Irish Gaels, known as Scoti, invaded Scotland in the 5th century and gave it their name. An Leabhar Mòr is a major artwork which renews the connection between Gaelic Scotland and Ireland and celebrates the diverse strands of contemporary Celtic culture. A beautiful book featuring work from every century between the sixth and the twenty-first - contains the earliest Gaelic poetry in existence. One hundred visual artists respond to the poetry in a variety of media. Includes work by poets Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Máire Mhac an tSaoi and by artists Allan Davie, Will Maclean and Rita Duffy among others. There is a website for the book, full of more information and details of related projects. Click here to watch a slideshow of 18 of the artworks in the book. Here are two samples 100 specially-commissioned artworks in the book, to whet your appetite: Art by Doug Cocker inspired by Tairseacha by Liam Ó Muirthile (b. 1950) Art by Andrew Folan inspired by An Scáthán by Michael Davitt (1950-2005)
Book Synopsis The Prose Literature of the Gaelic Revival, 1881–1921 by : Philip O'Leary
Download or read book The Prose Literature of the Gaelic Revival, 1881–1921 written by Philip O'Leary and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gaelic Revival has long fascinated scholars of political history, nationalism, literature, and theater history, yet studies of the period have neglected a significant dimension of Ireland's evolution into nationhood: the cultural crusades mounted by those who believed in the centrality of the Irish language to the emergent Irish state. This book attempts to remedy that deficiency and to present the lively debates within the language movement in their full complexity, citing documents such as editorials, columns, speeches, letters, and literary works that were influential at the time but all too often were published only in Irish or were difficult to access. Cautiously employing the terms "nativist" and "progressive" for the turnings inward and toward the European continent manifested in different authors, this study examines the strengths and weaknesses of contrasting positions on the major issues confronting the language movement. Moving from the early collecting or retelling of folklore through the search for heroes in early Irish history to the reworking of ancient Irish literary materials by retelling it in modern vernacular Irish, O'Leary addresses the many debates and questions concerning Irish writing of the period. His study is a model for inquiries into the kind of linguistic-literary movement that arises during intense nationalism.

Book Synopsis Gaelic Prose in the Irish Free State by : Philip O'Leary
Download or read book Gaelic Prose in the Irish Free State written by Philip O'Leary and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an authoritative account of the a major, but neglected aspect of the Irish cultural renaissance- prose literature of the Gaelic Revival. The period following the War of Independence and Civil War saw an outpouring of book-length works in Irish from the state publishing agency An Gum. The frequency and production of new plays, both original and translated, have never been approached since. This book investigates all of these works as well as journalism and manuscript material and discusses them in a lively and often humorous manner. -- Publisher description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impreasin na Gaeilge / Impressions of the Irish language (2014) is a research book on the sound of the Irish language based on native voices of the Gael from the Gaeltacht itself. The book is based on empirical work by two authors from County Clare. An tAthair Seóirse Mac Clúin based Réilthíní Óir on the Irish of the Great Blasket Islands. Réilthíní Óir comprised the native Irish of Tomás Ó Criomhthain and the islanders of the Great Blasket Islands prior to 1922. The original title is revised in full with modern additions based on current native Irish (2007-2014). The language planning researcher is Seosamh Mac Ionnrachtaigh from Kilrush West Clare. This combined research results in an Irish-Irish Dictionary of the Irish language with key explanations in English.

Book excerpt: At the time of his death in 1945, Albert Power was the leading nationalist sculptor in the Irish Free State, yet within a few decades he was almost forgotten. This first major examination of his life and career tells of one artist’s contribution to national identity before and after political independence. In sculpture, at that time, the emphasis was on creating a pantheon of ‘new’ Irish heroes by means of monumental and portrait commissions. Power’s work, however, sprang from deeply held nationalist beliefs and he felt that subject matter alone was insufficient to ensure a distinctive Irish art. Wherever possible he deliberately chose native stone, believing that this best conveyed a nationalist sentiment, such as the limestone he used in the beloved monument to Padraic Ó Conaire in Galway. His political commissions from 1922 onward reveal the new State’s desire for a national political and cultural identity, and in this book Power’s sculpture is explored both at the time of its production and within the broader context of writers and artists who wished to contribute to the new nation’s cultural identity, a legacy that modern Ireland enjoys today.
Book Synopsis Limerick Constitutional Nationalism, 1898-1918 by : Tadhg Moloney
Download or read book Limerick Constitutional Nationalism, 1898-1918 written by Tadhg Moloney and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses local politics in Limerick from 1898 to 1918, reaching back to the Parnellite split and forward to the post-independence era. It explores at local level the relevance of the commemoration of 1798, the reunification of the Irish Parliamentary Party, and the emergence of multiple cultural political movements as well as the demise of Unionism. The question posed is twofold: whether nationalist constitutional politics changed over this time period on the one hand, and whether they were driven by local or national concerns on the other. The conclusion is that the spirit of politics was intensely local, that political patronage was largely locally controlled, and that there were greater continuities than ruptures in the composition and behaviour of political elites. In fact, long-term continuities of personnel, social class and political allegiance existed side-by side with the ability of existing structures to absorb change and to adapt in the light of wider political developments and internal manoeuvres.
