Cette locution semble de prime abord un oxymore, tant le terrain caractérise cette part des sciences humaines qui se distingue de la philosophie. Cependant, la tradition philosophique elle-même, y compris ses courants " idéalistes ", ne cesse de s'inquiéter de sa relation à l'empirique, de ses effets sur le monde autant que de la manière dont le réel bouscule ses présupposés. Les années 2000 sont propices à interroger ce rapport au terrain, à questionner les pistes qu'il ouvre à une philosophie politique soucieuse d'interroger, comme le proposait Gramsci, les fonctions de l'intellectuel et ses instrumentalisations possibles. Se refuser à être un organe de pouvoir conduit à utiliser le travail de terrain comme fer de lance critique. Une telle critique devra aussi porter sur la partition sociale qui autorise la position philosophique elle-même : celle qui, dissociant le travail intellectuel du travail " manuel " ou technique, semble accorder au premier non seulement une préséance hiérarchique, mais plus encore un monopole de la pensée. Cette partition ne concerne pas seulement la philosophie, pour laquelle la question du terrain n'a jusqu'ici pas été posée de façon centrale, mais l'ensemble des sciences humaines. Celles-ci considèrent en effet la pratique de l'entretien comme un matériau d'investigation, mais non comme le moment d'une réciprocité de la réflexion. Le concept d'une philosophie de terrain conduit donc à penser une politique de l'entretien et à considérer celui-ci, au-delà du simple témoignage, comme l'élaboration d'une expérience spécifique de pensée. Les textes des entretiens n'ont pas le statut d'annexes, mais celui de référents du discours, au même titre que des citations d'auteurs : ils participent de la construction des concepts. La distance établie par la philosophie ne peut pas être un hors-sol. Le premier temps du parcours montre que cette proposition se distingue à la fois d'une tradition philosophique dominante et des usages du terrain dans l'ensemble des sciences humaines. Le deuxième temps met en évidence les précédents que constituent les démarches d'une autre tradition philosophique qui en a posé les jalons : chez Spinoza, Marx et Engels, Simone Weil, Arendt et Foucault, mais aussi chez Bourdieu. Le troisième moment aborde les expériences du terrain et leur formalisation à partir de trois exemples (en Egypte, au Chili et en Bulgarie) avant d'de poser la question d'une politique de l'entretien et de soulever les problématiques esthétiques liées à la démarche documentaire.
