Book excerpt: The normal function of the organism in various stages of activity can be seen as a process of mutual interaction of different regulation mechanisms building up the behaviour of the organism in changing situations and/or ages and/or levels of health or disease. Insights into these very complex relations which steer the action of the organism are particularly important for the study of internal medi cine. They can be seen as directly related to the understanding of pathological conditions. Recently, the medical community has focused its interest on the physiology and pathophysiology of events which happen during sleep. Although some information on pathological regulation during sleep was collected in the 1930s, the modern technology of registration methods is required to analyse the pheno mena of sleep-related physiological and pathophysiological patterns. It is intere sting that the modern research in this field developed from neuropsychiatry and is now expanding into other fields of medicine, although some problems, for instance the Pickwickian syndrome, were also for a long time considered part of the field of internal medicine. It becomes clearer that sleep is not only a neuro psychiatric phenomenon, but also has profound consequences for other physio logical circuits, perhaps even an important role in pathogenesis. Sleep also has profound consequences for internal diseases. This was shown very clearly recently by many groups, although their data have not yet received the attention which they deserve.

Book excerpt: A representative cross section of the latest work in sleep research is presented in this book based on the international symposium "Sleep and Health Risk" held in Marburg in 1989. Clinical work, basic research and methodology are described by leading specialists in the field. The clinical topics cover both the diagnosis and therapy of various sleep and sleep-related disturbances. The methodology section includes the newest observation and analysis techniques. Other sections discuss neurological aspects, sleep-related breathing disorders, occupational medicine, cardiovascular diseases, pediatrics, endocrinology and the psychiatry of insomnia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the important relationship between the heart and brain in medical practice. The brain and nervous system may cause or influence heart disease, for instance by causing arrhythmias or modifying the response to ischemia. Disorders of the heart and circulation may in turn cause brain damage, for instance by releasing emboli resulting in cerebral infarction. Frequently, the brain and heart are both targets of the same disease process. They both have electrophysiologically active cells, and the responses to these cells to disease and various interventions have several similarities. Many drugs affect both organs and have mutual negative side-effects. With the increasing subspecialization in medicine, it is important to offer a work that integrates basic and clinical aspects of cardiology, neurology, cerebrovascular surgery and neurosurgery. This cross-fertilization of subject areas will broaden horizons and advance both understanding and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common and progressive chronic disease. It is responsible for a high number of comorbidities and is linked with increased mortality, including a rise in the rate of sudden cardiac death. It is widely acknowledged that OSA now affects millions of people worldwide. This Monograph considers this high-impact condition from four different perspectives: pathogenesis; at-risk populations; clinical scenarios; and treatment and management. Comprehensive and up-to-date chapters provide the reader with a concise overview of OSA, making this book a useful reference for pulmonologists concerned with the management of this disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electroencephalograms (EEGs) are becoming increasingly important measurements of brain activity and they have great potential for the diagnosis and treatment of mental and brain diseases and abnormalities. With appropriate interpretation methods they are emerging as a key methodology to satisfy the increasing global demand for more affordable and effective clinical and healthcare services. Developing and understanding advanced signal processing techniques for the analysis of EEG signals is crucial in the area of biomedical research. This book focuses on these techniques, providing expansive coverage of algorithms and tools from the field of digital signal processing. It discusses their applications to medical data, using graphs and topographic images to show simulation results that assess the efficacy of the methods. Additionally, expect to find: explanations of the significance of EEG signal analysis and processing (with examples) and a useful theoretical and mathematical background for the analysis and processing of EEG signals; an exploration of normal and abnormal EEGs, neurological symptoms and diagnostic information, and representations of the EEGs; reviews of theoretical approaches in EEG modelling, such as restoration, enhancement, segmentation, and the removal of different internal and external artefacts from the EEG and ERP (event-related potential) signals; coverage of major abnormalities such as seizure, and mental illnesses such as dementia, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease, together with their mathematical interpretations from the EEG and ERP signals and sleep phenomenon; descriptions of nonlinear and adaptive digital signal processing techniques for abnormality detection, source localization and brain-computer interfacing using multi-channel EEG data with emphasis on non-invasive techniques, together with future topics for research in the area of EEG signal processing. The information within EEG Signal Processing has the potential to enhance the clinically-related information within EEG signals, thereby aiding physicians and ultimately providing more cost effective, efficient diagnostic tools. It will be beneficial to psychiatrists, neurophysiologists, engineers, and students or researchers in neurosciences. Undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical engineering students and postgraduate epileptology students will also find it a helpful reference.
