Book Synopsis What is Québécois Literature? by : Rosemary Chapman
Download or read book What is Québécois Literature? written by Rosemary Chapman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question 'What is Québécois literature?' might seem innocent and easily answerable. But as Rosemary Chapman shows in this compelling study, answering that question requires no less than the charting of the entire cultural history of French Canada, the contextualizing of francophone writing in Canada within postcolonialism, and the challenging of literary history to rethink its nation-based framework. Brilliantly navigating these ambitions, she provides the first major literary history of Québec, what will be compulsory reading for scholars in francophone postcolonial studies and an ideal introduction for anglophone scholars of Canadian literature.
Book Synopsis New Contexts of Canadian Criticism by : Ajay Heble
Download or read book New Contexts of Canadian Criticism written by Ajay Heble and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1997-04-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Times change, lives change, and the terms we need to describe our literature or society or condition—what Raymond Williams calls “keywords”—change with them. Perhaps the most significant development in the quarter-century since Eli Mandel edited his anthology Contexts of Canadian Criticism has been the growing recognition that not only do different people need different terms, but the same terms have different meanings for different people and in different contexts. Nation, history, culture, art, identity—the positions we take discussing these and other issues can lead to conflict, but also hold the promise of a new sort of community. Speaking of First Nations people and their literature, Beth Brant observes that “Our connections … are like the threads of a weaving. … While the colour and beauty of each thread is unique and important, together they make a communal material of strength and durability.” New Contexts of Canadian Criticism is designed to be read, to work, in much the same manner.

Book Synopsis A History of Canadian Literature by : William H. New
Download or read book A History of Canadian Literature written by William H. New and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "New offers an unconventionally structured overview of Canadian literature, from Native American mythologies to contemporary texts." Publishers Weekly A History of Canadian Literature looks at the work of writers and the social and cultural contexts that helped shape their preoccupations and direct their choice of literary form. W.H. New explains how – from early records of oral tales to the writing strategies of the early twenty-first century – writer, reader, literature, and society are interrelated. New discusses both Aboriginal and European mythologies, looking at pre-Contact narratives and also at the way Contact experience altered hierarchies of literary value. He then considers representations of the "real," whether in documentary, fantasy, or satire; historical romance and the social construction of Nature and State; and ironic subversions of power, the politics of cultural form, and the relevance of the media to a representation of community standard and individual voice. New suggests some ways in which writers of the later twentieth century codified such issues as history, gender, ethnicity, and literary technique itself. In this second edition, he adds a lengthy chapter that considers how writers at the turn of the twenty-first century have reimagined their society and their roles within it, and an expanded chronology and bibliography. Some of these writers have spoken from and about various social margins (dealing with issues of race, status, ethnicity, and sexuality), some have sought emotional understanding through strategies of history and memory, some have addressed environmental concerns, and some have reconstructed the world by writing across genres and across different media. All genres are represented, with examples chosen primarily, but not exclusively, from anglophone and francophone texts. A chronology, plates, and a series of tables supplement the commentary.
Book Synopsis History of Literature in Canada by : Reingard M. Nischik
Download or read book History of Literature in Canada written by Reingard M. Nischik and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of literature in Canada with an eye to its multicultural, multiethnic, multilingual nature. From modest colonial beginnings, literature in Canada has arrived at the center stage of world literature. Works by English-Canadian writers -- both established writers such as Margaret Atwood and new talents such as Yann Martel -- make regular appearances on international bestseller lists. French-Canadian literature has also found its own voice in the North American and francophone worlds. "CanLit" has likewise developed into a staple of academic interest, pursued in Canadian Studies programs in Canada and around the world. This volume draws on the expertise of scholars from Canada, Germany, Austria, and France, tracing Canadian literature from the indigenous oral tradition to thedevelopment of English-Canadian and French-Canadian literature since colonial times. Conceiving of Canada as a single but multifaceted culture, it accounts for specific characteristics of English- and French-Canadian literatures, such as the vital role of the short story in English Canada or that of the chanson in French Canada. Yet special attention is also paid to Aboriginal literature and to the pronounced transcultural, ethnically diverse character ofmuch contemporary Canadian literature, thus moving clearly beyond the traditions of the two founding nations. Contributors: Reingard M. Nischik, Eva Gruber, Iain M. Higgins, Guy Laflèche, Dorothee Scholl, Gwendolyn Davies, Tracy Ware, Fritz Peter Kirsch, Julia Breitbach, Lorraine York, Marta Dvorak, Jerry Wasserman, Ursula Mathis-Moser, Doris G. Eibl, Rolf Lohse, Sherrill Grace, Caroline Rosenthal, Martin Kuester, Nicholas Bradley, Anne Nothof, Georgiana Banita, Gilles Dupuis, and Andrea Oberhuber. Reingard M. Book excerpt: This book examines the cultural work of space and memory in Canada and Canadian literature, and encourages readers to investigate Canada within its regional, national, and global contexts. It features seven chapters in English and five in French, with a bilingual introduction. The contributors invite us to recognize local intersections that are so easily overlooked, yet are so important. They reveal the unities and fractures in national understanding, telling stories of otherness and marginality and of dislocation and un-belonging. Download or read book Kanade, di Goldene Medine? written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kanade, di Goldene Medine offers a broad study of its field, with equal attention to English- and French-language materials and contexts. The volume’s essays highlight the fundamental link between the culture and life of Canadian Jews and their Polish roots. This focus brings Yiddish to the fore, in essays focusing on the history of Canadian Yiddish literature, and the relevance of the language for contemporary Canadian Chasidic communities. However, essays in this volume also highlight the writings of contemporary authors, working both in French and English. Thus, the collection explores culture at the borderlands of three languages, with an eye for the link between New Worlds and Old.

Download or read book Apropos Canada written by Eugen Banauch and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first graduate conference of the Young Scholars' Network of the Association for Canadian Studies in German-speaking countries took place in Berlin in 2004. The conference has been an integral part of the academic year in Canadian Studies ever since. It offers an opportunity for young scholars to present their B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. projects and receive feedback and helpful suggestions from peers and experts. This type of academic exchange is particularly important in Canadian Studies as they often occupy a marginal position at universities. Beside graduate students from Canada, Germany and Austria, prominent Canadian scholars have also been invited to speak at the conference every year. This volume contains selected contributions (in English, German and French) presented at the first five graduate conferences and demonstrates the large scope of Canadian studies in German-speaking countries.
Book Synopsis Literature and Painting In Quebec by : William J. Berg
Download or read book Literature and Painting In Quebec written by William J. Berg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique study explores how Quebec's landscapes have been represented in both literature and visual art throughout the centuries, from the writing of early explorers such as Cartier and Champlain to work by prominent contemporary authors and artists from the province. William J. Berg traces recurrent images and themes within these creations through the most significant periods in the development of a Quebecois identity that was threatened initially by the wilderness and indigenous populations, and later by the dominance of British and American influences. Focusing on the interplay between nature and culture in landscape representation, Literature and Painting in Quebec contends that both have reflected and fashioned the meaning of French-Canadian nationhood. As such, Literature and Painting in Quebec presents a new perspective to approach the notion of national identity, a quest that few groups have engaged in more persistently than the Quebecois.

Book Synopsis Voices of Exile in Contemporary Canadian Francophone Literature by : Elizabeth Dahab
Download or read book Voices of Exile in Contemporary Canadian Francophone Literature written by Elizabeth Dahab and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Bessie Smith's powerful voice conspired with the "race records" industry to make her a star in the 1920s, African American writers have memorialized the sounds and theorized the politics of black women's singing. In Black Resonance, Emily J. Lordi analyzes writings by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Gayl Jones, and Nikki Giovanni that engage such iconic singers as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson, and Aretha Franklin. Focusing on two generations of artists from the 1920s to the 1970s, Black Resonance reveals a musical-literary tradition in which singers and writers, faced with similar challenges and harboring similar aims, developed comparable expressive techniques. Drawing together such seemingly disparate works as Bessie Smith's blues and Richard Wright's neglected film of Native Son, Mahalia Jackson's gospel music and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, each chapter pairs one writer with one singer to crystallize the artistic practice they share: lyricism, sincerity, understatement, haunting, and the creation of a signature voice. In the process, Lordi demonstrates that popular female singers are not passive muses with raw, natural, or ineffable talent. Rather, they are experimental artists who innovate black expressive possibilities right alongside their literary peers. The first study of black music and literature to centralize the music of black women, Black Resonance offers new ways of reading and hearing some of the twentieth century's most beloved and challenging voices.

Book Synopsis Land Deep in Time by : Weronika Suchacka
Download or read book Land Deep in Time written by Weronika Suchacka and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a group of most highly acclaimed Canadian writers and distinguished international experts on Canadian literature to discuss what potential Janice Kulyk Keefer's concept of "historiographic ethnofiction" has for ethnic writing in Canada. The collection builds upon Kulyk Keefer's idea but also moves beyond it by discussing such realms of the concept as its ethics and aesthetics, multiple and multilayered sites, generic intersections, and diasporic (con-)texts. Thus, focusing on Canadian historiographic ethnofiction, "Land Deep in Time" is the first study to define and explore a type of writing which maintains a marked presence in Canadian literature but has not yet been recognized as a separately identifiable genre.
Book Synopsis Women and Narrative Identity by : Mary J. Green
Download or read book Women and Narrative Identity written by Mary J. Green and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-03-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Women and Narrative Identity Green demonstrates that the "national text" has at times functioned to constrain women's literary expression, while in other cases it has empowered the feminine voice, endowing it with a unique identitary power. She shows that writers such as Laure Conan, Germaine Guèvremont, Gabrielle Roy, Anne Hébert, and Marie-Claire Blais have been recognized as important because they have been widely perceived as speaking to and about the people of Quebec. The Quebec identity narrative has offered women writers a framework within which they are able not only to make their voices heard but to tell a story of feminine dispossession and desire that often questions central cultural values. Green shows that while women writers in Europe and America have subtly altered the form of the novel, in Quebec women have, in rewriting the narratives of Quebec identity, also redefined the terms of the nation itself.
