Book Synopsis Le roman des eles by : Raoul (de Houdenc)
Download or read book Le roman des eles written by Raoul (de Houdenc) and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars and students working on the early courtly and chivalric literature of medieval Europe will have often felt the need for contemporary theoretical material with which to illustrate their arguments about courtesy and chivalry in romances, etc. The present volume, which presents critical editions of the two earliest didactic poems of this kind in the vernacular (both date from the first quarter of the thirteenth century), was conceived partly to fill this need. This book will be of interest not only to specialists in Old French literature, but also to those studying other literatures; both texts are known to have circulated in England in the fourteenth century and are therefore of importance for anglicists; L'Ordene de Chevalerie was adapted into Middle Dutch and Italian several times and provides excellent material for comparatists, netherlandists and italianists; moreover, given the germinal place of Old French literature in the culture of the Middle Ages, both poems are worthy of study in the context of the evolution of the ideals of courtesy and chivalry as European literary phenomenon. Each critical text is accompanied by an extensive literary introduction and philological apparatus, and translations into modern English prose have been appended to render the poems more accessible to non-romanists.

Book Synopsis Orality and Performance in Early French Romance by : Evelyn Birge Vitz
Download or read book Orality and Performance in Early French Romance written by Evelyn Birge Vitz and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a fundamental revision of the history of early French romance: it argues that oral and performed traditions were far more important in the development of romance than scholars have recognised. Starting with issues of orality and literacy, it is argued that the form in which romances were composed was not the invention of clerics but was, rather, an oral form. The second part of the book looks at performance, and shows that romances such as those of Chretien invited voiced presentation; moreover, they were frequently recited from memory, sung, and acted out in dramatic fashion. Romances can, and should, still be performed today.

Book Synopsis The Chivalric Turn by : David Crouch
Download or read book The Chivalric Turn written by David Crouch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chivalric Turn examines the medieval obsession with defining and practising superior conduct, and the social consequences that followed from it. Historians since the seventeenth century have tended to understand medieval conduct through the eyes of the writers of the Enlightenment, viewing superior conduct as 'knightly' behaviour, and categorising it as chivalry. Using, for the first time, the full range of the considerable twelfth- and thirteenth-century literature on conduct in the European vernaculars and in Latin, The Chivalric Turn describes and defines what superior lay conduct was in European society before chivalry, and maps how and why chivalry emerged and redefined superior conduct in the last generation of the twelfth century. The emergence of chivalry was only one part of a major social change, because it changed how people understood the concept of nobility, which had consequences for the medieval understanding of gender, social class, violence, and the limits of law.
Book Synopsis Re-Thinking Kinship and Feudalism in Early Medieval Europe by : Stephen D. White
Download or read book Re-Thinking Kinship and Feudalism in Early Medieval Europe written by Stephen D. White and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second collection of studies by Stephen D. White to be published by Variorum (the first being Feuding and Peace-Making in Eleventh-Century France). The essays in this volume look principally at France and England from Merovingian and Anglo-Saxon times up to the 12th century. They analyze Latin and Old French discourses that medieval nobles used to construct their relationships with kin, lords, men, and friends, and investigate the political dimensions of such relationships with particular reference to patronage/clientage, the use of land as an item of exchange, and feuding. In so doing, the essays call into question the conventional practice of studying kinship and feudalism as independent systems of legal institutions and propose new strategies for studying them.
