Book excerpt: "A haunting, disorienting, brilliantly constructed novel, Djinn is the story of a young man who joins a clandestine organization under the command of an alluring, androgynous American girl, Djinn. Having agreed to wear dark glasses and carry a can like a blind man, he comes to realize, through bizarre encounters, recurring visual images, and fractured time sequences he experiences as part of his undisclosed mission, that he is, in a sense, helplessly blind. His search for the meaning of his mission and for possible clues to the identity of the mysterious Djinn, becomes a quest for his own identity in an ever-shifting time-space continuum. His growing obsession with solving the mystery becomes the reader's own until, through a surprising shift in narrative perspective, the reader too becomes lost in the dimension between past and future." -- Publisher's description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fruits of a lifetime of experience by a cultural colossus, Philippe de Montebello, the longest-serving director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in its history, distilled in conversations with an acclaimed critic Beginning with a fragment of yellow jasper—all that is left of the face of an Egyptian woman who lived 3,500 years ago—this book confronts the elusive questions: how, and why, do we look at art? Philippe de Montebello and Martin Gayford talked in art galleries or churches or their own homes, and this book is structured around their journeys. But whether they were in the Louvre or the Prado, the Mauritshuis of the Palazzo Pitti, they reveal the pleasures of truly looking. De Montebello shares the sense of excitement recorded by Goethe in his autobiography—"akin to the emotion experienced on entering a House of God"—but also reflects on why these secular temples might nevertheless be the "worst possible places to look at art." But in the end both men convey, with subtlety and brilliance, the delights and significance of their subject matter and some of the intense creations of human beings throughout our long history.

Drawn by the need to reunited with his American girlfriend and faced with an insurmountable visa process standing in the way of their relationship, he makes the ultimate romantic gesture: smuggling himself across the border, despite the dangers he'll face from the blistering heat, vicious bandits, barbed wire, and -- most daunting of all -- the US border patrol. Book excerpt: When he stands before Giorgione's La Tempesta, Booker Prize-winning author John Berger sees not only the painting but our whole notion of time, sweeping us away from a lost Eden. A photograph of a gravely joyful crowd gathered on a Prague street in November 1989 provokes reflection on the meaning of democracy and the reunion of a people with long-banished hopes and dreams. With the luminous essays in Keeping a Rendezvous, we are given to see the world as Berger sees it -- to explore themes suggested by the work of Jackson Pollock or J. M. W. Turner, to contemplate the wonder of Paris. Rendezvous are manifold: between critic and art, artist and subject, subject and the unknown. But most significant are the rendezvous between author and reader, as we discover our perceptions informed by Berger's eloquence and courageous moral imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Featuring a broad selection of paintings, sculptures and photographs coming mainly from the Centre Pompidou collections, Louvre Abu Dhabi’s exhibition catalogue “Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co.” focuses on this highly distinctive period in French art when young painters, sculptors and photographers flocked to early-20th-century Paris from all over the world to make a decisive contribution to the city’s art scene. Most notably from Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia and even Japan, these formally inventive artists – Constantin Brancusi, Marc Chagall, Kees van Dongen, Tsuguharu Foujita, Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso among them – who would later become known as the “School of Paris”, rivalled the greatest French artists of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first laparoscopic cholecystectomy, performed by Prof. Philippe Mouret in 1987 and described by himself in the first chapter of this book, was an event that revolutionized surgery in the past few decades. Although the majority of surgeons today are unfamiliar with the his- ry of early minimally invasive surgery developments, it is important to realize that the advent of laparoscopy led not only to new surgical te- niques, but also to a change in the doctrine of medical care, by streng- ening the concept of minimal invasiveness. This is particularly the case for biliary lithiasis, for which laparoscopy has provided major benefits in terms of both diagnosis and surgical tre- ment. However, our understanding of the etiology of this disease, as well as the availability of effective medical therapies, have remained subst- tially unchanged over time. The application of the innovative approach has not been, in routine practice, without problems: between 1990 and 2000, the rate of serious complications from laparoscopic cholecystectomy were four times higher than those observed with open surgery. Even initial attempts at lapa- scopic treatment of biliary common bile duct stones resulted in excessive complications and associated medico-legal problems. Nonetheless, today, most indications have been stated, techniques have been standardized, and a new aspect to the treatment of biliary lithiasis has appeared.

Patrick West is a very diverse individual who is bicultural, American and European. He leaves his native London for higher education in the heartland of America, the Midwest. Patrick worked very hard to become a microbiologist and is ranked third in his class at Northwestern Law School in Chicago. His experiences have led him to a discovery that could possibly have an effect on many lives, and it may cost him his own. Three of Patrick’s closest friends have been mysteriously killed. In a race against time, authorities are baffled in explaining the trail of dead bodies stretching from the “Show Me State” of Missouri to Chicago and abroad. And the only clues available to the FBI are the victim’s relationship to Patrick and a memo that each received via e-mail. In the fall of 1994, six of nine individuals who have crossed paths with Patrick are bound on separate flights to Chambéry, France. Among the nine individuals are Caressa Morris, his former beautiful girlfriend who’s esurient to feast on compassionate love; Paul, a Midwestern farm boy from Iowa, escaping his rural roots; Kevin, an NFL prospect; Tracy, a lioness in adversity; Dr. Jonathan Smith, a veterinarian; Eric Williams, a trailer park resident and con artist; Dr. Richard Lee, a research biochemist; Rachel, an heiress to a family fortune; and April, an intellect who takes unconventional and eccentricity to another level. Could there be a connection between these nine individuals and Patrick’s discovery? Is it a coincidence? Or could each of them be running from their own hidden haunted past? In an era of advanced technology and e-mail, buckle your seat belt because Rendezvous in Chambéry is an intriguing first-class ticket to suspense that grabs you from page one, and it begs the question, “How can something so beautiful bring about so much evil?” Meet me, in Chambéry!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Women are not supposed to write; yet I write.” –Marceline Desbordes-Valmore In 1817, at the late age of thirty-three,Marceline Desbordes, the actress and Romantic poet–the only woman counted by Paul Verlaine among his poètes maudits, or “accursed poets,” a group that included Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire, and Alfred de Vigny–marries Prosper Valmore, a fellow actor who brings love and stability to her tumultuous life. Such stability is short-lived, however:When she meets Henri de Latouche, an influential man of letters, they soon begin a passionate affair. Although their tryst does not last more than a year, their relationship survives through letters and memory. It sparks inspiration in Marceline’s work and leads her to create some of the most beautiful poetry in French literature. A talented poet, a romantic woman, a passionate lover, a nurturing mother, and a child at heart, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore is rescued from obscurity through Plantagenet’s dazzling writing in this fictionalized biography. The book will include a selection of Desbordes-Valmore’s poems in the original French and in an English translation by the Pulitzer Prize—winning poet Louis Simpson.
