La dépression, l’abus de substances et l’épuisement professionnel n’épargnent pas non plus la population médicale. Nous nous sommes penchés, dans ce travail, sur la souffrance des psychiatres. Il existe en effet un lien fort entre travail et santé mentale. Souvent, la survenue de troubles psychiques résulte de l’intrication de facteurs individuels et environnementaux. Les facteurs individuels correspondent aux attentes non comblées et plus ou moins conscientes que l’on a du métier de médecin. Les facteurs environnementaux incluent notamment la complexité des liens qui se créent entre le psychiatre et son patient, les possibles contradictions entre les compétences du psychiatre et les exigences qu’a la société envers lui, et les difficultés plus matérielles liées à sa pratique. Ces facteurs sont mis en évidence à travers une étude menée auprès de 791 psychiatres hospitaliers, et illustrés par une situation clinique. Enfin, les particularités du médecin malade sont abordées : le médecin s’avère être un patient difficile, qui reste longtemps dans le déni de ses troubles et qui se soigne mal du fait de la crainte de la stigmatisation. Face à cela, certains pays étrangers ont mis en place des dispositifs qui ont servi de modèles à la France, très en retard sur ce sujet. De nombreuses autres pistes restent encore à explorer pour améliorer le suivi et la prise en charge de ces patients si particuliers, mais ces mesures ne peuvent s’avérer utiles que si elles s’accompagnent d’un changement majeur de mentalité au niveau de notre société.
